By Dave Schwalbe

Here's a look at how the first round of the 2000 NFL Draft would go if it were held today.

2000 Mock Draft
Team Player School Position Reason
1. Cleveland Peter Warrick Florida State WR Cleveland leaning, could lean back to Arrington
2. Washington
(from New Orleans)
LaVar Arrington Penn State LB The new home of the Department of Defense.
3. Washington (from San Francisco) Chris Samuels Alabama OT Could still be Courtney Brown, but they already have a lot of money invested in the defensive line.
4. Cincinnati Courtney Brown Penn State DE Does anyone remember the last time the Bengals had a dominant pass-rushing defensive end?
5. Baltimore
(from Atlanta)
Plaxico Burress Michigan State WR Need a WR. Burress can be a great pick.
6. Philadelphia Corey Simon Florida State DT Got Runyan as a FA so they'll probably go defense.
7. Arizona Thomas Jones Virginia RB Need a running game. Last Cardinal to lead the Conference in rushing — Jim Otis, 1975.
8. Pittsburgh Brian Urlacher New Mexico LB The scouts are in love with this guy. He can help the 26th ranked rush defense in the NFL. Only question: is he a linebacker or a safety in the NFL?
9. Chicago Deon Grant Tennessee S Ball-hawking safety gives Chicago defense some much-needed speed.
10. Denver Bubba Franks Miami - Fla. TE Shannon Sharpe is gone, TE is a big part of Denver's offense.
11. N.Y. Giants Shaun Alexander Alabama RB Or Dayne...or Lewis...or Stith...the running back wheel points to Alexander (at the moment).
12. San Francisco
(through Washington from Carolina)
Chad Pennington Marshall QB QB of the future (they hope).
13. Tampa Bay
(from San Diego)
Travis Taylor Florida WR Good receiver prospect. Have taken care of offensive line needs through free agency.
14. Green Bay Dez White Georgia Tech WR New coach will want impact. White can deliver.
15. Baltimore Jamal Lewis Tennessee RB If Baltimore can come away from the first round with Burress and Lewis, Brian Billick will be one very happy coach.
16. N.Y. Jets
(from New England)
Darren Howard Kansas State DE Need defensive linemen that can rush the QB. Could also go with Virgina Tech's John Engelberger.
17. Oakland Laveranues Coles Florida State WR Turned heads at the Combine. Al Davis not worried about any attitude problems.
18. N.Y. Jets Chris McIntosh Wisconsin OL Need to replace Jumbo Elliott. Jets could trade #'s 16 & 18 to move up. Todd Wade and Stockar McDougle are also possibilities.
19. Seattle (from Dallas) Todd Wade Mississippi OL Need offensive line help and Wade had a good workout at the Combine.
20. Detroit Cosey Coleman Tennessee  OL Best pulling guard in the draft to get out in front of James Stewart.
21. Kansas City Shaun Ellis Tennessee DE Need pass rush help. Could also pick John Engelberger.
22. Seattle Chris Hovan Boston College DT Lost Daniels and possibly Adams from last seasons defensive line. Hovan is strong inside.
23. Carolina
(from Miami)
Ron Dayne Wisconsin RB Tough pick to zero in on with a lot of needs to fill. Waived Fred Lane and Biakabutuka has a history of injuries. The Heisman winner would be a nice addition, but could also be long-gone depending on upcoming workout results.
24. San Francisco (from Washington) Ahmed Plummer Ohio State CB Good man-to-man defender with speed for a team that needs help in the secondary.
25. Minnesota Rashard Anderson Jackson State CB Need help in secondary and Anderson is tall, physical and has potential.
26. Buffalo Stockar McDougle Oklahoma OL Released Ruben Brown, can shuffle line and put the 6'5", 355-pound McDougle at tackle.
27. Tampa Bay Raynoch Thompson Tennessee LB Depth at linebacker needed with loss of Nickerson. Thompson is very athletic. Keith Bullock is possible.
28. Indianapolis Sylvester Morris Jackson State WR E.G. Green has not played a full season yet and Terrence Wilkins is undersized and wore down at the end of last season.
29. Jacksonville Jerry Porter West Virginia WR Are saying they want a WR in the draft. Could be a smokescreen, but at number 29 who are they hiding?
30. Tennessee Keith Bullock Syracuse LB Has speed and is athletic, the requirements to play for the Titans defense. Could go for a receiver, Danny Farmer's stock is rising.
31. St. Louis Travis Claridge USC OL The champs need depth at the offensive line and Claridge can play either guard in the NFL. Could also go for Marvel Smith.
