49ers' Erickson adds ex-colleague to staff February 19, 2003
Texas Tech's McMackin is named an associate head coach
TIMES WIRE SERVICES NFL notes New 49ers coach Dennis Erickson announced Tuesday the addition of Greg McMackin and the retention of Jerry Attaway and Terrell Jones to his staff. McMackin was named associate head coach/defense and will handle the linebackers for the 49ers. McMackin, whose coaching experience has included collegiate stops at Arizona, San Jose State, Stanford, Miami and Hawaii, recently concluded his third season as associate head coach/defensive coordinator at Texas Tech. McMackin served as the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks under Erickson from 1995-98. "He's a great coach," said linebacker Jeff Ulbrich who played for McMackin at Hawaii. "He's the kind of guy you love to play for." Attaway has been with the team for the past 20 seasons as coordinator for physical development. He supervises weight/exercise training and the dietary/nutritional needs of the players. Jones just completed his third season with the 49ers. His primary role is strength training. The 49ers also signed wide receiver Aaron Lockett and tight end Gabriel Crecion. COWBOYS: Emmitt Smith's status with the team will remain in limbo for at least another week. Smith and team owner Jerry Jones met to discuss whether the running back will return for a 14th season. Their only decision was to keep talking. "We will meet again, near the end of next week," Jones said. If the Cowboys want to bring Smith back, it certainly will be with a restructured contract. His current deal has a base salary of $7 million next season, with a salary-cap figure of $9.8 million. Smith, 33, ran for 975 yards last season, his lowest total since he was a rookie. EAGLES: Defensive end Derrick Burgess had surgery on a broke bone is his right foot, and running back Brian Westbrook had surgery to repair a fracture and ligaments in his right wrist. CARDINALS: Arizona signed receiver Jake Soliday to a one-year deal. Soliday had four catches for 39 yards in four games last season. ETC.: The annual scouting combine began, and two players who'll be closely examined are Marshall quarterback Byron Leftwich and Miami running back Willis McGahee. Both are coming back from injuries. With most of the top prospects unlikely to work out in Indianapolis, the physical has become the most important part of the week. • Two San Diego police officers acted reasonably when they shot and killed former NFL player Demetrius DuBose during a July 1999 confrontation, a federal jury ruled. The 10-member U.S. District Court panel decided officers Timothy Keating and Robert Wills had used justifiable actions. DuBose, 28, was shot 12 times during a struggle with police outside an apartment. An autopsy showed traces of Ecstasy, cocaine and alcohol in his blood. The decision came on a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Jacqueline DuBose-Wright, the mother of the former Tampa Bay linebacker.
