The 49ers came from behind Sunday to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 37-31, in a
display that bore all the hallmarks of the great 49ers teams of the last two
decades.
After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter and 20-7 at the half the
offence finally got moving, turning to their passing game to outscore Atlanta
30-11 after the half.
Down by two touchdowns, the defence received a blast from leader Bryant Young
which led to the turnaround that limited the falcons to 17 points from the
final three quarters plus overtime.
Driving to take the lead with under five minutes to play the Niners found
themselves down by seven after Anthony Parkers mistake allowed Brian Finneran
to take the ball 47 yards for a touchdown. Garcia then drove the 49ers to the
tying touchdown throwing 17 yards to Terrell Owens to cap off a 72 yard drive
in which he was 6/7 passing for 59 yards and ran twice for 14 yards.
After driving down to the Atlanta sixteen yard line in overtime, Garcia fumbled the snap from fill-in center Dave Fiore. Again the defence came
through, holding the falcons to a three and out series.
Getting the ball back once more Garcia took the 49ers 67 yards in 6 plays
finishing with a 52 yard touchdown strike to Owens for their third touchdown
hook-up of the day.
In a remarkable game safety Lance Schulters dislocated a shoulder on
Atlanta's first touchdown, but after having the shoulder put back in he
returned to record five tackles and a sack.
After recording zero receptions in the first half, Owens finished the game
with 9-183 yards and 3 td's. Garcia, in a second half performance reminiscent
of Joe Montana and Steve Young finished 27/41 passing for 332 yards and 3
td's. He also ran for 70 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown.
This season, the offence has been able to finish off close games, winning by
3, 2, 10 and 6 points.
With this win, San Francisco improve to 4-1, including three divisional wins
matching the previous two years total.
