Chandler twists ankle January 06, 2003
By Matthew Barrows -- Bee Staff Writer
The 49ers got a scare before the game when rookie kicker Jeff Chandler twisted his left ankle, which he uses for planting on kicks, during warmups. Coach Steve Mariucci said he asked punter Bill LaFleur if he could take over but was told LaFleur hadn't kicked since high school. "I tried to rest some guys last week, but I couldn't rest guys in warmups," a smiling Mariucci said after the game. "We have to warm up! We threw him in ice for about 20 minutes, and then we threatened him. He had to go. There's no other kicker." Chandler is listed as probable for Sunday's game at Tampa Bay.
