York: 49ers to talk with Dennis Green January 21, 2003
EX-VIKINGS COACH ATOP SHORT LIST
Mercury News Wire Services 49ers owner John York told CBS's ``The NFL Today'' and SportsLine.com on Sunday that former Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green is on the list to be interviewed for the head-coaching job. ``Our interest in Dennis is very well-known, and he is at the top of our shorter list,'' said York, who said he was interested in Seattle Coach Mike Holmgren but doubts the Seahawks will let him go. ``If things hadn't been solidified with Mike Holmgren, he would have been a viable candidate,'' York said. `I don't think that will happen now. But he would be a good fit.'' 49ers defensive coordinator Jim Mora will be interviewed and ``will have a clear shot at it,'' York said. But a new name is also cropping up: New York Jets defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell is a strong candidate, York said, although the team has yet to call the Jets for permission to speak with him. ``We've heard a lot of good things about Ted Cottrell,'' said York, who said he has met with Baltimore General Manager Ozzie Newsome and Pittsburgh owner Dan Rooney for help in compiling candidates. ``A lot of people have a lot of good things to say about Ted.'' Shockey fined for antics New York Giants rookie Jeremy Shockey was fined $10,000 for throwing a cup of ice into the Candlestick Park stands and making an obscene gesture during a first-round playoff loss to the 49ers. The NFL docked the All-Pro tight end $5,000 for each act, league spokesman Greg Aiello said Monday. Shockey threw the cup over his shoulder in the first quarter while being heckled by fans after he complained about the officiating. The cup hit two children seated in the first row behind the Giants' bench. The Giants apologized and gave the boys a football. Later, the boys were invited to the locker room, where Shockey signed the ball. Broncos replace Rhodes The Denver Broncos promoted Larry Coyer to defensive coordinator, filling the spot left by Ray Rhodes less than two weeks ago. The Broncos also promoted former player Steve Watson to wide-receivers coach. Coyer, 59, has coached 33 years in the NFL, USFL and on the collegiate level. He has served as the Broncos' linebackers coach for three years. Source: Jaguars add staff The Jacksonville Jaguars hired Bill Musgrave as offensive coordinator and Baltimore Ravens linebackers coach Mike Smith as defensive coordinator, a source within the league told the Associated Press. The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the two will be introduced today as Coach Jack Del Rio's key assistants. Nedney gets knee checked Tennessee Titans kicker Joe Nedney had an MRI exam on his hyperextended right knee after he was injured trying to make a tackle in the first half of their AFC championship loss to the Raiders. Results of the test were not available, and Coach Jeff Fisher declined to say whether Nedney will need surgery. The Titans received their final physicals, and defensive end Jevon Kearse already has said he wants surgery on his left foot. He broke the foot in the season opener, and doctors inserted a screw into the fifth metatarsal.
