Falling Into Infinity è l'album che segna l'uscita dal gruppo di Derek Sherinian. Le Novità per quanto riguarda la tecnica sono l'utilizzo da parte di John Myung della tecnica dello "slap" (che utilizzerà successivamente anche in "Scenes From A Memory"), e l'utilizzo dei controcanti effettuati da John P., Mike P. e Derek S. Il cd si presenta con melodie molto meno complesse di tutti gli altri albums e meno "heavy". Aumenta invece il numero di "ballate", come Hollow Years, Take Away My Pain e Anna Lee. L'album è stato il più venduto rispetto ai precedenti forse per il sound e per i testi più adatti ad una gamma più vasta di persone.
