Parens Augusti.

English translation

The 3d reconstruction above is just a product of the hobby of the author of these pages and it has not any pretence of resemblance etc..

Nevertheless, in our opinion, the portrait of the Parens Augusti can be the occasion for a few notes about its iconography.

The 3d picture is inspired by an ivory diptic of the Vth. cent.(picture on the right) ; it is supposed to show Stilicho, brother in law of the emperor Honorius.

You can notice how, still in christian times, the semibarbarus Stilicho - vandal origins - is represented with the typical iconography of the pagan god Mars.

See: http://www.snaithprimary.eril.net/rpeople/godsm.jpg

Reading the Claudianus' "De consulatu Stilichonis" we can easily understand that the reference to the iconography of the pagan god doesn't depend just on an old habit but recalls a still living heritage (and religiousness).
