HOW TO... MAKE YOUR GUNDAM MODEL KIT!

By Lewismaster

This guide to model building doesn't claim to be in any way exclusive and complete, but it is meant as a tool for both the inexperienced model maker and the veteran to get better in their craft. The building procedure must necessarily be personal, but it should follow a few basic steps. The choice of the model to built is only the first step of the building procedure and it has great influence in the following steps.

1) Choice of the model and documentation - You can pick out a model following the most varied motivations: the colour, the shape, its history, the resemblance with something that you like or are fascinated with, like another model or a real object. But when you make your choice, the first problem comes about: what should my model look like? It could look like what is represented in the building instructions or it could look like the original drawings done by its first designer (usually quite different from the instructions included). Maybe it should look like another model that you saw somewhere else or maybe it could look like a WWII tank, complete with camouflage and additional protections. Finally it could be the basis for a completely new creation of yours. Anyway this is a fundamental choice that will spread its influence in the whole building process and that cannot be avoided. It's obvious that the documentation necessary for the construction of the model is different depending on the initial choice made. If you want a mobil suit in WWII style, it would be better to take a look to war books with plenty of camouflage and insignia examples. If you want references to the original drawings from the designer instead, they are often included in the instructions or are available from a plethora of other publications. In fact there are publications full of data, drawings, photos and free interpretations of every model, enough to satisfy any wish of every Gundam fan and more.
