Self-Assembled Quantum Dots
Nanometer-scale islands that
form spontaneously on a semiconductor substrate have atomlike properties and
potential applications in optical and optoelectronic devices, quantum
computing, and information storage.
Pierre M. Petroff, Axel Lorke, and Atac
Imamoglu
Recent
progress in lithography, colloidal chemistry, and epitaxial growth have made it
possible to fabricate structures in which carriers or excitons are confined in
all three dimensions to a nanometer-sized region of a semiconductor. Structures
like these are commonly called quantum dots (see the article by Marc A. Kastner
in Physics Today, January 1993, page 24*). The quantum
dots that we focus on in this article form spontaneously during the epitaxial
growth process, with confinement provided in all three dimensions by a high
bandgap in the surrounding material. By contrast, in lithographically defined
quantum dots, a quantum well provides a confining potential along the growth
direction while the lateral confinement is provided by an electrostatically
induced potential barrier. In the past few years, quantum dots have attracted
considerable interest because their atomlike properties make them a good venue
for studying the physics of confined carriers and many-body effects. They could
also lead to novel device applications in fields such as quantum cryptography,
quantum computing, optics, and optoelectronics.
The
presence of a discrete energy spectrum distinguishes quantum dots from all
other solid-state systems and has caused them to be called "artificial
atoms." However, the atomquantum dot analogy should not be carried too
far: Unlike electrons in an isolated atom, carriers in semiconductor quantum
dots--which contain from a few thousand to tens of thousands of atoms arranged
in a nearly defect-free three-dimensional crystal lattice--interact strongly
with lattice vibrations and could be strongly influenced by defect, surface, or
interface states.
One of
the most important consequences of strong carrier confinement in quantum dots
is the prominent role of many-particle effects. Coulomb interactions between carriers
control the quantum dot charging and carrier recombination dynamics. Some of
the many-body effects have already been investigated in lithographically
defined quantum dots, including the physics of Coulomb charging and the Kondo
effect1 (see Physics Today,
January 1998, page 17*). Measurements of
transport properties in a magnetic field have been used to study the filling of
energy levels and the validity of Hund's rule in these electrostatically
defined quantum dots.2 Unexpected effects have
been reported in these systems, including the pairwise loading of electrons
into quantum dots.3
Self-assembled
quantum dots have smaller sizes and stronger confinement potentials than
lithographically defined quantum dots and therefore permit the study of
different quantization regimes. Unlike lithographically defined nanostructures,
self-assembled quantum dots can be easily fabricated and readily analyzed using
optical spectroscopy and measurements of their transport properties. Based on
experimental results, it seems likely that self-assembled quantum dots will
play a key role in the emerging fields of single-particle electronics and
photonics.
Growing quantum dots, rings, and lattices
Fabrication
of self-assembled quantum dots begins with some form of atomic deposition onto
the surface of a semiconductor substrate, where the deposited material is
chosen to have a smaller bandgap than the substrate. During the deposition
process, epitaxial islands spontaneously form for energetic reasons on the
crystal surface. These islands are then made into quantum dots by covering them
with another semiconductor layer having a larger bandgap than the islands.
In
practice, in-situ growth techniques such as molecular beam epitaxy or
metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition are used to obtain the requisite
ultraclean conditions and exquisite control of deposition parameters. With
these techniques, a flux of atoms (for example, gallium, indium, or arsenic) is
sent onto an ultraclean gallium arsenide surface held at high temperature.
After diffusing across the clean reconstructed surface, the atoms arrange
themselves, starting from step edges, to form a continuous epitaxial layer. The
surface, interfacial, and elastic energies of the epitaxial film change during
the film deposition process and the atomic arrangement on the surface develops
so as to minimize the sum of these energies. The elastic strain energy of the
film grows quadratically with the film thickness, and if the epitaxial film
material has a lattice parameter even a few percent different from that of the
substrate, nanometer-sized islands can form on the surface to minimize the
total energy.4 This film relaxation is
elastic, so no defects are introduced in the island formation process.
Epitassiale Puntini Di Quantum Di
dell' elemento portante. **time-out** alcuno molto-corpo effetto già essere

**time-out** elastico sforzo energia pellicola svilupp

the film energy on the surface and relax local elastic stresses. The number of

and the size, orientation, and period of the mesa lattice

The
growth process just described has been used to form InxGa1xAs
quantum dots within a GaAs substrate. Here, the lattice misfit strain varies
from 0 to 7% as the In concentration x increases from 0 to 1. As shown
by the atomic force micrograph images in figure 1, the growth
process for this well-studied system can be controlled to produce new quan
tum
dot shapes, dimensions, and lattices. The usual growth pattern is a random
nucleation of islands at step edges on the clean surface, with the quantum dots
having a truncated pyramidal shape (figure 1a). Altering
growth conditions can cause the islands to form with a ring shape,5 though still in a random
array (figure 1b). Remarkably,
the random array of islands can be changed into a periodic one by controlling
the quantum-dot nucleation on the surface (figure 1c).6
The
island structures depicted in figure 1 are converted
to quantum dots by covering them with a GaAs epitaxial layer. A 3D array of
quantum dots can then be produced by repeating the deposition sequence just
described. If the distance between successive InAs layers is less than about 10
nm, the quantum dots in successive layers tend to be aligned in order to
minimize the elastic strain energy of the InAs layers.4 This vertical strain
coupling has recently been exploited to construct a 3D quantum-dot crystal,6 starting with a 2D
template like the array shown in figure 1c.
Epitaxial
growth and the chemistry of interfaces are complex subjects, and major
challenges remain for improving size uniformity and controlling the
composition, position, and shape of quantum dots. Nevertheless, a wide variety
of quantum-dot systems has been made using the epitaxial growth approach,
including group IV elemental systems (such as SiSiGe), and group IIIV and IIIV
compound semiconductors.

Quantum-dot
field-effect device used to probe the electronic states of self-assembled
quantum dots and quantum rings. (a) The device consists of a
capacitor-like structure between two parallel conducting plates; the
self-assembled islands are embedded, as indicated, in an internal layer. The
lower plate (back contact) is part of the grown semiconductor structure and
consists of a highly (silicon) doped GaAs layer. The top plate is a thin, transparent,
metal layer evaporated on top of the sample. The field inside the capacitor
structure, and thus the energetic alignment between the islands and the back
contact, can be tuned by an external voltage Vg applied
between the back contact and the top gate. Because the back contact is located
only some tens of nanometers away from the islands, electrons can readily
tunnel back and forth between the two if an electronic level in the islands is
aligned with the chemical potential of the back contact. When a small AC
voltage Vmod is added to Vg, the resulting
shift of charge back and forth between the back contact and the dots will
manifest itself by an increased capacitive signal in the external circuit,
which can be used for capacitance spectroscopy. (b) A schematic
conduction band diagram shows that electrons enter the quantum dots by
tunneling from the back gate through the GaAs barrier (the triangular section
above the double-headed green arrow). The allowed dipole transitions of the
many-particle system are measured using infrared spectroscopy, as indicated:
The lower energy level is populated from the back contact using an applied bias
(green arrows), then an incident infrared photon induces a transition between
two quantum dot energy levels (red arrow), and the transition energy is
measured by infrared absorption spectroscopy.
In
contrast to real atoms, for which the confining Coulomb potential is well
known, the forces that keep the carriers in place in self-organized islands are
difficult to estimate from first principles. The exact shape and composition of
the islands are not well known and depend on the growth procedure; in addition,
complications are introduced by the complex band structure of the strained
material and the effect of piezoelectric forces.7 Studies often define an
effective confining potential inside the dots or rings; a good assessment of
this quantity can be obtained from a combined study of the ground-state and excitation
energies. Ground-state energies are investigated by capacitance spectroscopy.8 Excitations can be
studied by transmission spectroscopy in the far infrared8 (see the article by
Detlef Heitmann and Jörg P. Kotthaus in Physics Today, June 1993, page 56*). For self-assembled
quantum dots and rings, both kinds of spectroscopic measurements can be made
with a special field-effect structure, shown in figure 2, that is based
on a metal-insulator-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MISFET) design.

Capacitance
spectroscopy reveals quantum-dot electron occupancy and ground-state energies
in the field-effect device shown in figure 2. Above,
measured capacitance is plotted as a function of bias voltage Vg.
Numbered arrows indicate the peaks that occur where an additional electron
enters the dot. Below, the schematic band diagrams show the changes in the
effective confining potential (black curve) and in the lowest energy levels
(connected blue circles, filled in for occupied levels) as electrons are added
to the quantum dot. The Fermi level mback of the back
gate, which is proportional to the bias voltage, is at the top of the dark
shading in the diagrams. Although the lowest energy state is doubly spin
degenerate, electronelectron interaction makes it harder to load the second
electron into a quantum dot than the first. The energy levels when the first
electron enters the dot are shown at bottom left; Coulomb interaction raises
the energy of the two-electron state by almost 20 meV compared to the
one-electron state (the so-called Coulomb blockade), as shown at bottom center.
To load the second electron the back gate potential must be raised (bottom
right). Adding a third electron would require both the Coulomb energy and the
quantization energy of about 50 meV, so there is a gap in voltage between the
second and the third peak in the charging characteristic (top). To convert from
bias voltages to energies, a scaling factor (about 7 for the present structure)
is used, which can be derived from a simple evaluation of the capacitative
energy at the quantum dot layer.
The
capacitancevoltage characteristic of quantum dot samples typically manifests
six maxima, as shown in figure 3, where the
indicated maxima denote the loading of one through six electrons into the dot.
The charging peaks are grouped according to the internal shell structure in the
dots, which is indicated at the bottom of figure 3. The first two
electrons fill the lowest, spin-degenerate state, the so-called s shell.
The fact that the next shell consists of four roughly equally spaced maxima is
a direct consequence of the shape of the confining potential, with symmetry in
the xy plane and much stronger confinement along the growth direction z
because of the oblate shape of the self-assembled islands. It turns out that
many electronic properties of quantum dots can be well accounted for by
assuming parabolic confinement in the xy plane.
After
the charging state has been determined by capacitance spectroscopy,
far-infrared spectroscopy can be used to study the excitations of the n-electron
state in the dots. As long as only the s state is filled (n = 1, 2), the far-infrared data agree well with the
parabolic model and allow for a precise determination of the effective
curvature of the confining potential. When the third electron is loaded (a
state corresponding to "quantum dot lithium"), the character of the
spectrum changes and the simple parabolic model no longer explains the data.
The process just described can be used to investigate the quantum-dot
"periodic table," with each element exhibiting a characteristic
spectroscopic fingerprint.
In
many respects, quantum rings are just quantum dots with a peculiar (w-shaped
rather than parabolic) confining potential.9 The decisive
difference in their topology--the "hole" in their middle--becomes
prominent when an external magnetic field is applied. The magnetic flux that
penetrates the interior of the ring will then determine the nature of the
electronic states.
The
energy states in quantum rings can be most easily derived by assuming the rings
to be an infinitely thin wire bent into a loop of radius R. This system
is a textbook case of a one-dimensional solid with periodic boundary
conditions. The energy spectrum is
readily calculated to be

quantum manifesta tipicamente sei massimi, come appare figura 3, dove i massimi
I picchi

field, the phase shift picked up by the electron on its way around the ring
leads to an additional term, which involves the ratio between the flux through
the ring v and the flux quantum v0 =

field axis according to the respective L value, is shown in figure 4. If the
magnetic field increases above the level corresponding to f/f0 =
½,
the ground state (lowest energy state) will shift from the L = 0 to the L = -1 parabola. A similar change in ground state will take place for each
additional flux quantum in the interior of the ring. This results in an
AharonovBohm-type periodic oscillation in the ground-state energy, as can be
seen by following the thick lines in figure 4 that mark the
actual ground state.
cambiamento continuo all'interno dell' anello.
The
nonvanishing angular momentum of quantum rings in the presence of a magnetic
field is closely related to the fascinating physics of the so-called persistent
currents in mesoscopic rings.10 Unlike mesoscopic rings,
however, self-assembled InGaAs rings function in the true, scatter-free,
quantum limit, and they are therefore more like ring-shaped molecular systems
such as benzene. Note, however, that trapping a flux quantum inside benzene
would require a magnetic field of about 8 ´
104
T, many orders of magnitude stronger than those available in today's
laboratories.
The
quantum-dot single-electron ground state will always have L = 0, and so the change in ground state from L = 0 to L =
-1
is a decisive feature distinguishing quantum rings from quantum dots.
Far-infrared spectroscopy of samples with ring-shaped islands suggests that
such a ground-state transition takes place at a magnetic field of close to 8 T.
At this field, the excitation spectrum is observed to undergo a drastic change,
with new resonances appearing and others disappearing. The conjecture that this
behavior is caused by a change in ground state can be tested experimentally
with capacitance spectroscopy, where the single-particle ground state can be
directly monitored by mapping out the position of the lowest charging maximum
as a function of the magnetic field.

magnetico.
Figure 5 shows the
calculated energy states of a model quantum ring having dimensions that are
based on an evaluation of experimental far-infrared data; the red data points
give the measured magnetic-field dispersion of the lowest charging peak. The
kink in the data-point curve at 8 T matches the cusp in computed ground-state
energy and confirms that, at this magnetic field, the ground-state L
value changes. These data also indicate that the ring shape of the uncovered
InGaAs islands is indeed translated into a not-simply-connected electronic
state.
Quantum-dot cavity quantum electrodynamics
Cavity
quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED) has provided an invaluable tool for
investigating quantum phenomena (see the article by Serge Haroche and Daniel
Kleppner in Physics Today, January 1989, page 24* and the article by
Yoshihisa Yamamoto and Richart Slusher in Physics Today, June 1993, page 66*). This field of atomic
physics and quantum optics has shown, for example, that spontaneous emission of
radiation from excited atoms can be greatly enhanced or inhibited by placing
the atoms in a specially designed cavity or between mirrors. Modification of
spontaneous emission due to the presence of a cavity is known as the Purcell
effect.
The
elementary system in cavity QED is a two-level system interacting with a single
cavity mode.11 If the electric field per
photon inside the cavity is sufficiently large, then the exchange of energy
between the two-level emitter and the cavity mode will be reversible and the
cavity will have a strong effect on the two-level system. To reach this
so-called strong-coupling regime of cavity QED, the single-photon Rabi
frequency g must exceed the decoherence rates in the system from cavity
losses and dipole dephasing. This means that for a two-level emitter with a
large optical dipole moment, the cavity structure must have an ultrasmall
optical mode volume and a high quality factor Q.
A
ground-state exciton in a self-assembled quantum dot constitutes an ideal
two-level system for cavity QED applications. Unlike atoms, quantum dots do not
undergo random motion; they are naturally trapped in the surrounding high-bandgap-energy
semiconductor. The advanced semiconductor fabrication techniques used for
quantum dots can be used to shape the semiconductor material in which the
quantum dots are embedded so that the resulting photonic structure supports
high-Q optical modes with mode volumes approaching the fundamental limit
determined by the wavelength of the generated photon.
One of
the principal applications of cavity-QED techniques has been in the emerging
field of quantum information science: A significant fraction of quantum
computation and communication schemes rely on the strong-coupling regime of
cavity QED.12 It is possible to enhance
the total radiative decay rate of the emitter by using a cavity and the Purcell
effect, even when the dipole coupling rate is smaller than the cavity decay or
dipole-dephasing rates.13 If the cavity mode has a
preferential output direction, the Purcell effect will ensure fast and
directional emission from the two-level system. These features are highly
desirable for applications in optoelectronics as well as in quantum
information.
Experiments
on quantum dots embedded in micropillar and microdisk structures have already
demonstrated the Purcell effect, both for an ensemble of dots13 and for a single dot.14 Observations in quantum
dotmicrodisk structures of high-Q whispering gallery modes--spherically
symmetric resonant-cavity modes where the electromagnetic energy is
concentrated mostly on the periphery--suggest that the strong-coupling regime
could be reached in this system.14 In photonic bandgap (PBG)
materials, which are periodic structures that forbid photon propagation in a
particular frequency range, progress has been slower due to the significantly
more demanding processing required. On the other hand, recent experiments on
quantum dots embedded in 2D PBG defect cavities indicate that this system is
likely to play a dominant role in cavity QED with quantum dots in the near
future.

A
major success of quantum-dot cavity QED--and an indication of the great potential
of self-assembled quantum dots for applications in quantum information
technology--is the realization of a quantum-dot single-photon turnstile device.
Photon correlation measurements (see the box on page 51) on
a single quantum dot embedded in a microdisk have revealed that, when
saturated, this dot generates one--and only one--photon at the fundamental
exciton transition for every excitation pulse from a mode-locked laser. The
result was an 82-MHz repetition rate single-photon source.15 The intensity correlation
function for this device is shown in figure 6 along with
that for the excitation laser. Absence of a peak in the photon source
correlation function at zero time delay indicates that the probability of
emitting a pulse containing two or more photons is negligible. The microdisk cavity
is an important component of the device: When the quantum-dot fundamental
exciton line is on resonance with a cavity mode, the Purcell effect shortens
the radiative recombination time and improves the collection efficiency. Such a
source is predicted to be a key ingredient in quantum cryptography and could
enable quantum computation using only linear optical elements.
Quantum-dot information storage
Trapping
carriers in a quantum dot prevents diffusion or drift and can drastically
reduce the carriers' rate of recombination with ionized impurities or other
defects. This effect can be used as the basis for a very-high-density memory
device in which information is written and read by controlling charge storage
in quantum dots.16

Such a
charge-storage memory device that uses light for reading and writing
information is shown schematically in figure 7. An incident
photon representing a data point generates an exciton that is dissociated
within the structure into an electron and hole, which are then stored in a pair
of closely spaced, strain-coupled quantum dots. The induced dipole resulting
from the electron and hole separation is detectable by luminescence.17 When the stored
information is to be read, the exciton can be reassembled by using an applied
electric field to drive the hole into the quantum dot that contains the stored
electron. Monitoring the light output from the device as a function of storage
time gives a measure of the charge storage capability. Charge storage times of
up to 10 s have been measured, which are remarkably long when compared to the
exciton lifetime in a quantum dot of about 5 ns.18 The idea behind this
device--dissociating an exciton for storage in a quantum-dot pair and then
reassembling it for readout--could turn out to be a viable approach for an
all-optical memory.
Optically
addressing a single quantum dot using a microphotoluminescence microscope has
become routine in the past few years.18 With improvements in
quantum-dot ordering and positioning, we can hope in the near future to address
and store information optically in a single quantum dot, thus opening the
possibility of ultrahigh-density memory devices.
With
self-assembled quantum dots, quantum control of carrier injection and photon
generation is now possible. The experiments discussed and referenced in this
article demonstrate the immense potential of this type of quantum dot for
enabling new science and technology. Especially notable is the key role that
quantum dots are likely to play in the emerging field of quantum-information
science--either as building blocks where quantum information is stored in the
spin degrees of freedom, or as a source of single photons for quantum
communication.
On the
other hand, our understanding and control of quantum-dot growth and physics are
far from complete. Reducing the quantum-dot size distribution and the
observation of 3D confinement effects at room temperature remain outstanding
challenges for materials science. Further research in these areas should yield
a wealth of new physical phenomena and exotic devices.

High-Tc
Bicrystal Grain Boundaries
Grain boundaries in
high-temperature superconductors illustrate the interplay of physics, materials
science, and applications in complex materials.
Jochen Mannhart and Praveen Chaudhari
Among
superconductors, the high-transition-temperature (high-Tc)
cuprates, discovered 15 years ago by Georg Bednorz and Alex Mueller, are the
most complex and fascinating. Since their discovery, three themes have been
researched quite intensely: understanding the microscopic basis of the
mechanism of superconductivity, advancing applications ranging from thin films
used in superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) to wires for bulk
applications, and discovering new superconducting compounds.
In
conventional, noncuprate superconductors, the three themes are generally quite
distinct. But in the high-Tc materials, the first two are
frequently intertwined. For example, the physics of the symmetry of the
superconducting wavefunction, the materials science of growth and defect
control, and applications such as SQUIDs and wires are all closely connected.
The cuprates are prototypical of a general trend in research: As materials
become more complex, a close working relationship among physics, materials
science, and applications becomes essential. Here we present a striking example
of this interplay: grain boundaries in the cuprate superconductors.
The
discovery of the high-Tc superconductors was immediately
followed by frenetic activity to find materials with still higher transition
temperatures. Amid this excitement, however, there was a growing and gnawing
concern that applications of these materials would be exceedingly difficult to
achieve. Two factors underpinned this doubt. First, the coherence length in the
high-Tc materials is extremely short--only several angstroms,
compared to 39 nm in niobium (a conventional superconductor) at 4.2 K. Such an
ultrashort coherence length seemed to rule out the fabrication of
device-quality Josephson junctions for SQUIDs. Second, the small critical
current density Jc observed in these materials--a few hundred
A/cm2 at 4.2 K, compared to approximately a million A/cm2
in conventional superconducting wires--appeared to preclude almost all
thin-film and bulk applications.
During
1987-88, three papers changed the picture completely.1 The first showed that the
critical current densities of thin single-crystal films epitaxially deposited
on single-crystal strontium titanate substrates are at least of the order of 105-106
A/cm2 at 77 K, more than enough for practical applications.
The second proved the suspicion, already alluded to in the first report of
high-Tc superconductivity, that, in sharp contrast to
conventional superconductors, the Jc in these materials is
deleteriously determined by grain boundaries, the interfaces between
crystallites in polycrystalline samples. The third paper showed that the
strength of the superconducting coupling across a grain boundary is a function
of the misorientation angle defining the grain boundary, and that large-angle
grain boundaries, coupled by the Josephson effect, can potentially be used for
devices. The findings described in these papers stimulated numerous research
groups to contribute to and extend the basic understanding of high-Tc
superconductivity, to build devices, and to develop ingenious techniques for
producing wires.2 (See Physics Today, March
1995, page 20, and March 1996, page 48.*)
materiali complessi. Jochen Mannhart e Praveen Chaudhari fra i superconductors,
In
realizzare. Due fattori hanno sostenuto questo dubbio. **time-out** in primo

The bicrystal technique
There
are many degrees of freedom in the choice of the relative orientations of two
adjoining crystals and the location of the grain boundary between them.
Although many grain-boundary geometries have been investigated with success,
the most widely examined ones, which we focus on in this article, are in thin
films designed so that only one externally controllable degree of freedom
exists: the angle of rotation about the c-axis, normal to the planes of
the high-Tc compounds (see figure 1).
The
first experiments on bicrystal grain boundaries were carried out on samples
prepared by fusing two SrTiO3 crystals with a predetermined
misorientation between them. The fused crystals, or bicrystals, were
subsequently polished and used as a substrate for depositing epitaxially grown
films of YBa2Cu3O7-d, shown schematically in figure 1a. The
orientation of the deposited cuprate film followed that of the underlying
substrate, so that the resulting epitaxial film had a single grain boundary
with a prescribed orientation. The atomic-scale structure of a grain boundary
fabricated with the bicrystal technology is shown in figure 1b. The interface
is clean at an atomic level and is only a few angstroms wide.
I cristalli fusi, o i bicristalli,

Many
groups have measured the current-carrying properties of grain boundaries
prepared by the bicrystal technique. Figure 2 shows
representative recent data of the variation in Jc as a function
of the misorientation angle q. The critical
current density decreases exponentially by three to four orders of magnitude as
q increases to 45°. In
addition, there is a substantial scatter in Jc for a given q. The reasons why the decrease is exponential and why
the scatter is present are topics of ongoing research.
The
critical current across a grain boundary shows two limiting behaviors. Below
angles of about 10°, the critical current is limited by the onset of flow of
magnetic flux quanta along the boundary, whereas for larger angles, the
boundary acts as a Josephson junction, with weak coupling between the grains
and a supercurrent that depends on the phase difference between the grains'
superconducting wavefunctions. These observations make clear that, for wires, q should not exceed 10°; for Josephson devices, a
desired value for Jc can be selected by choosing q. These findings initiated a wide spectrum of
applications, as illustrated in figure 3.

Many
attempts have been made to explain the decrease in Jc with
increasing q. Such a change is
expected in a superconductor with d-wave symmetry, in which the strength
of the superconducting coupling is orientation-dependent (see Physics Today,
March 2000, page 17*). However, the extent of
the observed decrease in Jc is larger than expected.
Topological defects are therefore generally believed to be responsible for a
significant part of the suppression of the supercurrent flow across grain
boundaries.
The
current-carrying properties of all the grain boundaries in the cuprate
superconductors are qualitatively similar. They do not depend on the details of
how the boundaries are produced, or whether the material is a film or bulk. The
current-voltage data measured across grain boundaries have provided various
universal features.3 For example, if biased
above their critical current, large-angle grain boundaries have a finite and
relatively temperature-independent electrical resistance. Furthermore, some
misorientations show steps in the current and a zero-bias anomaly with enhanced
conductance. The current steps originate from resonances between the microwave
radiation generated by the boundary due to the Josephson effect and the
boundary's dielectric cavity modes. These so-called Fiske resonances suggest
that the interface of a large-angle boundary acts as an insulating dielectric
layer through which the current flows by tunneling. The zero bias anomaly is
nowadays explained by the presence of electron states in the superconducting
gap associated with d-wave symmetry.

SQUID applications
Once
the bicrystal experiments demonstrated the Josephson-junction behavior of
high-angle grain boundaries, SQUIDs emerged as a natural application to pursue.
Many early grain-boundary SQUID experiments2 were performed
at IBM in the late 1980s. The SQUIDs were almost exclusively so-called
dc-SQUIDs, consisting of two Josephson junctions connected in a superconducting
loop with a diameter typically around 50 mm. Since then,
the research of prominent groups worldwide has led to low-noise high-Tc
single-grain-boundary SQUID systems operating to temperatures as high as 110 K.4 Whereas many of these
SQUID systems are based on grain boundaries fabricated with the bicrystal
technique, others make use of grain boundaries induced by the growth of high-Tc
films on steps, crafted into the substrate surface (the so-called step-edge
technique). And some SQUID systems use the biepitaxy technique, in which a seed
layer is first deposited on part of the substrate; the high-Tc
film subsequently deposited on the seed layer has a different orientation from
the film deposited directly on the substrate. (The first commercially available
SQUID used biepitaxially induced grain boundaries as the Josephson junction
elements.) High-Tc SQUIDs are already in use in bio- and
geomagnetometry, magnetic imaging, nondestructive materials evaluation,
picovoltmeter measurements, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
cui uno strato del seme in primo luogo è depositato sulla parte del substrato;
già dentro uso in bio- e formazione immagine geomagnetometry e magnetica,
In the
medical sector, an important advantage of the high-Tc
materials is the practicality of using liquid nitrogen over liquid helium.
High-Tc SQUID magnetometers (which measure magnetic fields)
and gradiometers (which measure magnetic field gradients) are currently being
tested in clinical environments. The potential of these techniques is illustrated
by figure 4, which
displays two magnetocardiograms of a patient, the first taken immediately after
a heart attack, the second one hour later. The magnetocardiogram reveals prominent
changes in the heart signal following the attack, changes completely missed by
the standard electrocardiogram. Although these specific measurements are of
exploratory nature and need to be repeated and confirmed with many more
patients, they clearly demonstrate a potential benefit of high-Tc
SQUID systems in medical applications.
In the
semiconductor industry, the bicrystal SQUID technology has found use in mapping
out the magnetic field associated with the flow of current through metal lines
in semiconductor chip packages, shown in figure 5. In this
example, deviations from the expected current flow patterns were used to
diagnose, at room temperature, wiring defects in multilayer packages of static
random access memory chips made in a manufacturing line; such a diagnosis is
not possible by other means.
attualmente stanno esaminandi negli ambienti clinici.
mancato dall' elettrocardiogramma standard.
Nell' industria a
semiconduttore, come appare figura 5.
The
search for low-noise and high-speed radiation detectors and spectrometers is
another active area of research. Superconducting Josephson junctions are, in
many ways, ideal for these applications: They consume little power, generate
relatively little noise at their low operating temperatures, and switch rapidly
between superconducting and ohmic behavior. Single-boundary high-Tc
junctions have been used for detection of radiation and for spectroscopy at
frequencies up into the terahertz range.2 An optical
micrograph of a broadband logarithmically periodic antenna used for such
studies is shown on the cover of this issue. The antenna uses a 30° bicrystal
Josephson junction at its center as a detector.
Probing the underlying physics
Knowing
the underlying symmetry of the macroscopic quantum wavefunction is important in
understanding properties of the high-Tc superconductors and
in delineating which class of theories best describes these materials. Although
the symmetry cannot establish the pairing mechanism, it can provide a check on
proposed models.
Much
of the early research into the high-Tc superconductors
focused on the nature of the wavefunction of the paired electrons (see Physics
Today, January 1996, page 19). Many proposed that the pairs form a "d-wave"
state, with symmetry. In
such a state, depicted in figure 3e, the
superconducting wavefunction has four lobes of alternating sign. If two
superconductors with symmetry are
brought into contact at a Josephson junction, the phase difference across the
junction is a function of the relative angle of rotation of the two
superconductors and the orientation of the junction plane. Bicrystal grain
boundaries directly lend themselves to analyzing these effects and therefore
provide a method of systematically exploring the symmetry of the order
parameter. Indeed, they have been used with great success for this purpose.
If the
orientation of the two crystals on either side of a grain boundary is such that
the phase of the order parameter changes sign across the boundary, there is a
corresponding change in phase across the junction by p. If two junctions, one of which has a phase change of
p and the other not, are
placed in a superconducting loop in series, the requirement that the phase
difference around the loop be a multiple of 2p spontaneously produces a supercurrent that induces a phase shift of p to add to or subtract from that produced just by the
junction geometry. This supercurrent flowing around the loop produces half of a
quantum of magnetic flux, (1/2)(h/2e),which
is measurable and is direct evidence for the existence of a junction with a p phase shift. Such experiments, using a scanning SQUID
microscope, indeed revealed the presence of a half-integer flux (see figure 3g), proving symmetry 5 at or near a grain
boundary.

centro come rilevatore.
controllo sui modelli proposti.

Superconducting
electronics
The
use of superconductivity in electronic applications has always had special
appeal because of its inherent high speed and low power consumption. Josephson
memory and logic applications were widely investigated during the 1970s. There
have been two approaches to developing high-Tc electronics:
applying electric or magnetic fields to very thin films of high-Tc
materials to obtain three terminal devices, and building logic circuits using
the flux quantum. In both approaches, grain-boundary junctions are used.
Researchers
recognized very early that high-Tc materials have lower
carrier concentrations than their conventional counterparts. This difference
implied a larger electronic screening length, and therefore the possibility
that an applied electric field could penetrate deep enough to produce a
measurable change in the supercurrent and thus give rise to a field-effect
transistor (FET).6 The grain boundary is
generally believed to have an even lower carrier concentration, which could
enable an electric field to modify the Josephson current across a grain
boundary embedded in a superconducting drain&-source channel, much as a
gate voltage modifies the current through a semiconductor FET. Indeed, an
electric field was observed7 to shift the Tc
of a grain boundary by 10 K, with a correspondingly large change in Jc.
The grain boundary thus behaved as a Josephson field-effect transistor (JoFET).
Two
other ideas are being explored for producing three-terminal Josephson devices
with grain boundaries: using quasiparticle injection into the boundary, and
modulating the boundary's resistance by a local magnetic field. These
transistors are clearly research devices with exciting properties. Some of them
show both current and voltage gain, and all have a superconducting
"on" state (recent progress is documented in ref. 2).
Josephson
junctions switch between superconducting and ohmic behavior at subpicosecond
speeds, providing opportunities for ultrafast electronic devices.2,8 The most prominent
architecture explored at present for superconducting digital circuitry is the
rapid single-flux-quantum (RSFQ) technology. Here, information is represented
by magnetic flux quanta, which are shifted between circuit elements at high
speed. High-Tc RSFQ devices have predicted operating speeds
exceeding 1 THz and dissipation levels of only microwatts per element. Small
exploratory RSFQ logic circuits, including flip-flops, shift registers, and
analog-to-digital converters, have been implemented, some using bicrystal
technology (see figure 3f). Likewise,
prototypes of voltage standards based on the Josephson effect use bicrystal
junctions, in some cases several hundreds of them simultaneously. There are two
serious problems with these devices, however: the difficulty of getting
junctions with the same critical current densities and the inability to
fabricate junctions where needed, rather than where the boundaries lie.
Quantum
computers manipulate coherent quantum states, which are made up of a
superposition of, say, two states such as spin up or down. Such a two-state
system is the quantum equivalent of the classical binary bit, and is called a
quantum bit or qubit. In principle, many ways exist of generating qubits. One
approach is to use circuits made out of conventional superconductors in which
Josephson junctions are connected in loops. In these circuits, a precisely
controlled magnetic field corresponding to half a flux quantum is applied to
produce degenerate quantum states to serve as qubits.
The
use of high-Tc superconductors provides an attractive
alternative: If the loop encloses a Josephson junction with a p phase shift, then half a flux quantum is produced
spontaneously. This approach has two advantages: With no need for an applied
magnetic field, noise from external sources is minimized; and the behavior is
much less sensitive to the exact properties of the loops and the junctions,
which places less stringent demands on lithographic control. Grain boundaries
are a natural choice for producing these p junctions. But
such an approach has two inherent problems: d-wave superconductors have
a large density of excitable quasiparticles at the nodes where the
superconducting wavefunction goes to zero, and grain-boundary junctions have a
finite resistance. Both can cause decoherence of the wavefunction and lead to
intolerable errors. Dennis Newns of IBM has proposed that, at the very low
temperatures at which quantum computers would have to operate, the effect of a
node is small and can be ignored. The second problem, that of decoherence at
the grain boundaries, can be addressed by making the grain boundary insulating,
as discussed later.
cambiamento corrispondentemente grande in Jc.
progresso recente è documentato in rif. 2).
I piccoli
condurre agli errori intollerabili.
The strongly coupled regime
Our
discussion so far has focused on the use of Josephson coupling, observed across
a large-angle boundary. For a number of other applications, the presence of
Josephson coupling is undesirable, and hence either no boundaries or, at best,
only low-angle ones can be tolerated. An example of an important commercial
application of zero grain-boundary tolerance is in high-Q filters in
base stations for wireless communication. Several hundred base stations in the
US currently use this technology, in which only epitaxial films deposited on
single-crystal substrates are used. (The films themselves are not perfect
single crystals. They contain very low-angle grain boundaries and, frequently,
twins, which are 90° rotations within the layers. Neither of these classes of
defects significantly affects the critical current densities.)
For
bulk applications such as wires, it would be prohibitively expensive to produce
a single-crystal material, and low-angle grain boundaries are tolerated. Note
that the detrimental effect of grain boundaries in high-Tc
wires contrasts with the situation in conventional superconductors, in which
grain boundaries are sometimes deliberately introduced to increase Jc
through enhanced pinning of magnetic vortices. To pursue these applications,
several fabrication techniques have been developed to produce high-Tc
conductors--both flat tapes and round wires--that contain only low-angle
boundaries. These techniques fall into two general categories: powder-in-tube
methods9,10 or coated-conductor technologies.11,12
Deformation
of large-grained crystalline materials changes an initially random distribution
of the orientations of grains to one that can have pronounced orientational
order--a process known as texturing. The texture that develops is controlled by
the material's crystal structure and the method of deformation. Within the
layered high-Tc materials, bismuth-based superconductors such
as Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d are particularly anisotropic, with coupling
between the layers dominated by Van der Waal's forces. When these materials, in
powder form, are placed in a silver tube and extruded, they develop a desirable
texture: The microstructure produced in this powder-in-tube method is
lamella-like, with the layers lying parallel to the extrusion direction and
with a good fraction of the near-neighbor misorientation below 15° (see figure 3a).
Wires
must not only have the requisite critical current densities but the cables
formed from them must pass economic and reliability measures, such as
mechanical strength. Prototype systems built in Europe, Japan, and the US show
an encouraging trend in both these criteria.10 The critical
current densities of cables are in the range of 104 A/cm2
at 77 K, dropping approximately by half in a magnetic field of 1 T applied
parallel to the tape surface. The cable systems are designed for high-power, 25
MVA-5 GVA applications (5 GVA is the output power of a very large nuclear power
plant).
Another
method of texturing is to provide a template that has a textured surface on
which the high-Tc materials are deposited.11,12 When tapes of
nickel-based alloys are rolled and suitably heat-treated, the Ni grains become
textured along two of their main crystal axes, so that grain boundaries are
aligned in all directions. On this surface, a buffer layer and then a high-Tc
material, typically YBa2Cu3O7-d, are deposited. As in the bicrystal
experiments, the epitaxial high-Tc film reproduces the
microstructure of the buffer layer, which in turn replicates that of the Ni
alloy. The thickness of the superconducting films is in the range of a few
microns, with the entire tapes being 25-50 mm thick. This process, known as the rolling-assisted biaxially textured
substrate technique (RABiTS),12 produces low-angle
boundaries (2-5°); consequently, the Jc reaches values well
above 105 A/cm2 at 77 K and 1 T.
Texturing
can also be induced in the buffer layer, either by ion-beam-assisted deposition
or deposition under a glancing angle.11 The critical current
densities of superconductor films grown on textured buffer layers exceed 106
A/cm2 at 77 K and zero external magnetic field. Tapes 1 cm
wide carry well above 100 A at this temperature. The length of the tapes is
limited currently to several meters, but deposition systems capable of
producing longer tapes are being built.
Coated
conductor processes solve the grain boundary problem by aligning the grains and
thereby exploiting the full potential of high-Tc
superconductors. The main challenges are reducing the cost of fabricating
wires, maintaining a large Jc in thick films to meet
practical requirements, and fabricating wires of sufficient length. But further
progress is anticipated. For example, deposition of high-Tc
films on metallic tapes by non-vacuum techniques such as dip-coating is showing
increasing success, with Takeshi Araki and colleagues at the International
Superconducting Technology Center in Nagoya, Japan, reporting Jc
values already exceeding 106 A/cm2 at 77 K.
Contengono molto i
superconductors bismuto-bismuth-based quale Bi2Sr2CaCuÒ8+d sono particolarmente
allineati in tutti i sensi.

Controlling the boundaries
So far
in our discussion, the naturally occurring properties of grain boundaries in
the high-Tc cuprate materials have been accepted as given.
Either the boundaries have been exploited or ways have been found of avoiding
their detrimental behavior. But in recent experiments, the properties of grain
boundaries have been deliberately modified. There are two application
areas--almost two extremes--in which modification is desirable: qubits and
wires. Qubits require an insulating grain boundary; wires require strong
superconducting coupling, which will reduce the cost of fabrication of cables
by relaxing the stringent need to control their microstructure.
Many
attempts have been made to modify the properties of grain boundaries. The most
significant of these have been the recent studies of chemical doping, at or
near the boundaries, that enhances the boundaries' Jc without
lowering the Tc of the bulk material13 (see Physics Today,
October 2000, page 21*). This approach has its
genesis in the large electric screening length of the high-Tc
superconductors. In these materials, grain boundaries are electronically
active, creating near the boundary either depletion layers with a reduced
number of superconducting charge carriers or enhancement layers with excessive
carrier density. Reducing the structure-induced positive grain-boundary charge,
such as by replacing some of the Y3+ ions by Ca2+ in YBa2Cu3O7-d, should therefore enhance Jc.
However, this replacement has to be done not only in a process compatible with
large-scale production but with nanometer accuracy at the interface only,
because the substitution causes an undesirable reduction of the Tc
within the grains.
This
obstacle was overcome by using multilayers of YBa2Cu3O7-d and Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-d films: Calcium atoms diffuse right along the
grain boundary into the YBa2Cu3O7-d layer, enhancing Jc by a
factor of six at 77 K for 24° boundaries. This technique may ease the
requirement of grain alignment faced by the coated conductor technologies. If
doping of the grain boundaries can enhance coupling, then, in principle, it can
also be used to make it insulating. This development would be very desirable for
implementing qubits and for devices utilizing hysteretic Josephson junctions.
A new paradigm
The
experiments on grain boundaries in the high-temperature cuprate superconductors
illustrate the close interplay of physics, materials, and applications. The
epitaxial growth of YBa2Cu3O7-d films enabled the bicrystal technology and
the fabrication of electromagnetic detectors, such as radio-frequency
spectrometers and SQUIDs for such diverse fields as medicine and nondestructive
testing. The identification of the coupling across grain boundaries into
flux-flow and Josephson-coupled regimes had a direct effect on science and
applications, including producing superconducting cables with high critical
current densities and designing experiments that established the symmetry of
the superconducting order parameter at the grain boundaries.
The
close connections among physics, materials, and applications has motivated
research and produced remarkable progress in all three areas. We believe that
as the complexity of materials grows, knowledge of science and its application
will be increasingly required, if not essential.

Abstract: Cylindrical vector beams have been proposed and demonstrated
for applications ranging from microscopy to high
energy physics. In this
paper, we analyze the three-dimensional field
distributions of radial and
azimuthal beams focused near a dielectric interface.
We give particular
attention to the classic problem of high numerical aperture
focusing from an

the use of radially and

f1. Introduction
Cylindrical-vector beams are solutions of Maxwell’s
equations which obey cylindrical
symmetry both in field-amplitude and polarization.
Such solutions have been the topic of
numerous recent theoretical and experimental
investigations [5-23]. It has been found, for
example, that such beams may be produced by active or
passive means [13-17]. The use of
an interferometric, polarization converter has
recently allowed the application of focused
cylindrical-vector beams to several different types of
microscopy [14].
Meanwhile, the propagation and focusing properties of
these beams remain of continued
interest. Three recent papers [14,18,19], have
analyzed the high numerical-aperture focusing
properties of the beams in free space, and have shown
that a highly inhomogeneous
distribution of electric field directions exist near
focus and that, in the case of a radially
polarized beam, the non-propagating longitudinal
component to the electric field may achieve
a strength several times that of the propagating
component.
Fields focused onto an interface have been previously
investigated [2-4], these papers have
only considered linearly polarized light. Recently
Helseth has considered interfacial focusing
with beams of arbitrary polarization and gave one
example of a radially polarized beam [5].
The strong longitudinal component created by radially
polarized beams naturally raises the
question of the distribution of fields at various
interface positions. Recent investigations of
optical focusing inside a dielectric have demonstrated
that focusing a source of illumination
over a cone of light which extends beyond the critical
angle produces astigmatic effects due to
the Goos-Hänchen phase shift experienced by plane
waves undergoing total internal
reflection.
In this paper, we analyze the through focus
three-dimensional field distributions of a
cylindrical vector beam incident on a dielectric
interface, with special attention to using such
beams for high numerical aperture illumination from
inside a dielectric. This is of
considerable interest becauseas we will show, a
cylindrical vector beam, by its very nature,
possesses a plane wave spectrum which is either
entirely s-like or entirely p-like. There is
therefore no astigmatism and the lateral confinement
of the fields near focus is impressive
over a wide range of interface positions.

2. Theory
To find the reflected and transmitted fields of the
focused field, an initial focused field is
found using the theory described by Richards and Wolf

beams by Youngworth and Brown [18].

azimuthally and radially polarized beams are found in
the same fashion as Török et al [3] and

For azimuthally polarized light the procedure is
similar to that of Helseth [5], the only
differences being that the incoming light is
completely s polarized. The initial field after

**time-out** tre recente carta [ 14.18.19 ],

In

(c) 2001 Osa Il 5 Novembre 2001

Here we see that the radial field component is
continuous across the interface, while the
longitudinal component is discontinuous. This is
expected according to Maxwell’s boundary
conditions.
The fields for azimuthally polarized light can be
obtained using a similar procedure. In
this case we find only one vector component in the
azimuthal direction and the field is
everywhere s polarized. In Figures 3a and 3b we see
two examples of azimuthally polarized
light focused onto an interface. Figure 3a considers
an oil immersion lens focusing in air,
and figure 3b considers focusing from air onto a
silicon substrate. We see again that the on
axis null is preserved through the focus. Also since
the field is transverse to the plane of the
interface, there is no field discontinuity as the beam
passes through the interface.

We now consider an immersion lens (NA =1.4) focusing a
radial beam to a dielectric/air
interface. Figure 4 shows the total intensity of a
radial beam as the interface is moved
through focus. As we adjust the position of the
interface (which is equivalent to defocusing
the beam) we see that the longitudinal field focal
spot can extend beyond the interface over a
considerable range of defocus positions, but is
shifted from the origin. The deviation of the
focal spot can be thought of, in a geometrical optics
fashion, as a result of spherical aberration
due to refraction at the interface. Using the full
width at half maximum (FWHM) of the focal
spot as a gauge, we may now compare the resolution of
various polarizations when focused
beyond the dielectric-air interface. Figure 5 shows
the FWHM of the intensity of a focused,
linearly polarized beam, a focused radial beam (total
intensity), and the longitudinal
component of a focused radial beam for different
values of the interface position.

represent the longitudinal component of the radial

the FWHM are given in wavelengths. An interface at a
negative position is inside the
geometrical focus.
For radially polarized light, the FWHM of the focal
spot is somewhat smaller than that of
the linear field for a wide range of interface
positions before the geometrical focus. However,
if we consider only the longitudinal component of the
radially polarized beam, it has the
smallest FWHM of the other two beam polarizations,
over a large range of interface positions
before the geometrical focus. We propose, therefore,
that linear or nonlinear mechanisms
which detect the scattering of longitudinal fields can
provide, in air, a resolution equivalent
to what is possible with immersion objectives. A
mechanism that is strongly responsive to
just a longitudinally polarized field is surface
harmonic generation (HG). In principle, a
surface HG field could be produced at an interface to
create an image of the interface, with

better resolution than conventional linear or
circularly polarized beams. This is likely to be
of great importance, for example, in semiconductor
mask and wafer inspection.
4. Conclusion
The three dimensional fields of cylindrical vector
beams focused through a dielectric interface
have been calculated and compared to circularly
polarized light. Examples have been given
both for air objectives focused on to a high index
(e.g. semiconductor) substrate and a
dielectric/air immersion system. For the case when the
beam is focused through an
immersion lens (NA = 1.4), the radial beam is of
considerable interest because of the rather
tight confinement of the longitudinal field and its
extent into the air. Such beams are likely
to play important roles in a variety of surface
imaging applications.

1. Introduction
In recent years
Digital Holography (DH) technique has been demonstrated to be a useful
method in different
fields of optics like microscopy [1,2,3], deformation analysis [4], object
contouring [5],
particles sizing and position measurement [6]. In DH the recorded intensity
distribution of the
hologram is multiplied by the reference wavefield in the hologram plane
and the diffracted
field in the image plane is determined by the usual Fresnel-Kirchoff integral
[7] to calculate
the intensity and the phase distribution of the reconstructed real image.
Compared to
conventional holographic technique, digital recording and numerical
reconstruction of
holograms offer new possibilities in optical metrology. In fact, since the
hologram is coded
numerically as a digitized image, it is not necessary to process a
photographic plate
to reconstruct a real image. Moreover, the numerical reconstruction of the
complex wavefield allows
access to not only intensity, which is obtained by conventional
photographic
methods, but also to phase. Limitations of DH imposed by the low spatial
resolution of the
CCD detector have been widely discussed in literature [8].
Recently it has
been shown that DH can be efficiently employed to compensate for
aberrations [9,10]
and for correcting image reconstruction in the presence of severe
anamorphism [11].
Further interesting applications of DH rely on the possibility of carrying
out whole
reconstruction of the recorded wave front, i.e. the determination of intensity
and of
the phase
distribution of the wavefield at any arbitrary plane located between the object
and
the recording
plane. To the best of our knowledge, the possibility of using DH for
reconstructing
whole optical wavefields has not been fully exploited in the framework of
wave front sensing
for optical testing. Quantitative determination of the complex amplitude of
the field
propagating away form the object allows investigation of the modifications
suffered
by the wavefield
through phase-distorting media, e.g. lens with aberrations or ground-glass
screen or
atmospheric turbulence, to cite only some applications.
In this paper we
discuss the principle of the method for numerical reconstruction of the
wavefield complex
amplitude, and we show that this technique can be used for simultaneously
determining the
intensity and phase distributions at locations along the propagation direction
backward from the
hologram plane. We present the numerical reconstruction of the wavefield
from digitally
recorded in-line hologram patterns and from simulated test patterns with the
aim of examining
the reliability of the method and its potential for analyzing wavefields.
2. Theoretical
principle and experimental description
Holography is a
method that allows reconstruction of whole optical wavefields. The hologram
is recorded onto a
high resolution CCD array and then multiplied by the reference wavefield
in the hologram
plane to calculate the diffraction pattern in the image plane. The
reconstructed
field ' , ' ( ' y

is obtained by using the well known [7] Fresnelapproximation

dell' immagine reale ricostruita.
in letteratura [ 8 ].

The reconstructed
wavefield in the hologram plane contains three terms, which generate the
zero order
diffraction, the real and the unsharp virtual image of the object (here
represented by
the focal point of
the object wavefield). The reconstructed intensities in Fig.3 show clearly the
patterns of these
three terms that are superposed because of the in-line geometry of the set-up
(see Fig. 1). The
clip video in Fig.3a shows that a point shaped intensity pattern is obtained at
the reconstruction
distance d’=D=180 mm from the hologram plane. According to simple
geometrical
considerations (see Fig. 4), this distance corresponds to the focusing distance
of a
converging
spherical wavefield produced by the achromatic doublet.
The digital
intensity reconstruction in the movie of Fig. 2b shows the focusing of a
wavefield affected
by anamorphism. It can be clearly seen that in this condition we have two
line images: a line
image at the horizontal focal line, occurring at d’ . 183 mm, corresponding
to the tangential
focus, and a vertical line image at the sagittal focus reconstructed at a
distance d’ . 218 mm.
This simple example
shows that numerical reconstruction of holograms provides an
efficient method
for visualizing qualitatively the influence of wavefield aberrations and makes
it possible, in
principle, to compensate for phase distortions suffered by the wave front along
its propagation.
Quantitative
analysis of optical aberrations of wavefields relies on the ability of DH to
provide information
not only about the intensity but also on the phase distribution of the
optical field at
different planes from the recorded hologram.

3. Conclusions
In this paper, we
have investigated on the potential of digital holography for whole
reconstruction of
wavefields. We have shown that this technique can be efficiently used for
simultaneously
determining the intensity and phase distributions at different locations along
the propagation direction
backward from the hologram recording plane.
The advantage of
the reconstruction method here used is that the size of the reconstructed
image remains
unchanged, this way allowing for easy comparison of the intensity and phase
distributions along
different reconstruction planes. We have presented numerical
reconstructions of
the wavefield from digitally recorded in-line hologram patterns and from
simulated test
patterns. Simulated test results have been found in good agreement with the
experimental observations
from recorded holograms. The potential of this method for
analyzing aberrated
wave front has been exploited by applying the reconstruction procedure to
astigmatic hologram
patterns.
