Datato 1984, questo ormai storico film di Miyazaki è universalmente riconosciuto come il suo capolavoro assoluto, più di Conan, che lo ha preceduto, e di Laputa e Totoro, che lo hanno seguito. E pensare che la sua prima uscita nelle sale cinematografiche giapponesi risultò essere un grosso flop! Ci volle un pò di tempo perché i meriti fossero riconosciuti.
Si tratta inoltre dell'unica opera del maestro che abbia goduto di una trasposizione a fumetti per opera di Miyazaki stesso: naturalmente un altro capolavoro! La Planet Manga (Marvel Italia) ha da poco ristampato il fumetto, già editato una volta, diversi anni fa, dalla Granata Press.
 
 

This historical film shot by Miyazaki in 1984, is generally acknowledged to be his absolute masterpiece, better than the previous Conan and than the later Laputa and Totoro. It is surprising to think that, when it first came out in the Japanese cinemas, it was a great flop. A bit of time has been necessary to recognise its qualities.
Moreover, this is the only work which has been transposed into a comic- strip by the author himself: another masterpiece, of course! At the moment, Planet Manga (Marvel Italia) has recently reprinted the comic-strip, first published by Granata Press various years ago.
