Ryoichi Ikegami è nato a Fukui nel 1944; la sua carriera artistica è cominciata ad Osaka, dove, finita la scuola, venne assunto nello studio di un illustratore. Ha cominciato a disegnare manga dal 1961 ma solo nel 1966 viene notato da un autore di fama, Shigeru Mizuki, che gli offrì un posto come assistente nel suo studio di Tokyo. Sanctuary
is the story of two boys, Akira Hojo e Chiaki Asami, who come back to Japan
after having fought in the Cambodian civil war, and after having undergone
indescribable horrors as prisoners of the terrible Red Khmers. They decide to
change their country, which they think has abandoned itself to peace and which
has too corrupted institutions. Following two different but complementary ways,
Asami becomes a politician, while Hojo becomes a boss of the gangsters, and the
two start making their way to assume the power of the hated "old ones",
using any lawful and illicit method at their disposal to achieve their purpose. Ryoichi
Ikegami was born in Fukui in 1944; his artistic career started in Osaka, where,
having finished school, he was employed in the office of an illustrator. He
started to draw manga in 1961, but only in 1966 was he noticed by a famous
author, Shigeru Mizuki, who appointed him as assistant in his office in Tokio.
From then onwards, he started his career as managaka, reaching the peak of
renown and sales thanks to some of his works which became famous all over the
world: Mai the Psychic Girl, Crying Freeman, Samurai Crusaders e Sanctuary, to
which this page is dedicated, drawn by Ikegami and dramatized by Sho Fumimura,
better known to the Western public as Buronson, the script-writer of Hokuto no
Ken (Fist of the North Star).
