BECK english version
L'idolo
della generazione X
Mescola
rock, hip-hop, country e atmosfere anni ‘70. Ma non disdegna anche il funky
“buono e irresistibile”. Le sue invettive politiche gli sono valse
l’appellativo di “Dylan delle nuove generazioni”. E la critica lo ha già
definito “geniale”. Ritratto di Beck, cantautore-rivelazione della nuova
scena Usa
di
Simone Corini
il nuovo lavoro Midnite vultures, Beck Hansen (1970, Los Angeles)
continua a stupire.
Woody Guthrie, Blind Willy Johnson e Skip James.
“anti-folk”. Tornato in California, esordisce giovanissimo nello
“Mtv makes me want to smoke crack” ("Mtv mi fa venire voglia di fumare
“Loser” (“…I’m a loser, baby, so why don’t you kill me?”:
Ballew dei Presidents of the United States, che partecipano a Stereopathetic
soulmanure.
da party, ritmi saltellanti, cori, bassi, fiati, “groove” a go-go e voci in
BECK
The
idol of the X-Generation
He
melts rock, hip-hop, country and seventies atmospheres. Ma he also likes
"the good and irresistible funky". His political slogans worth him the
title of "Dylan of the new generations" and critics defined him as a
genius. A portrait of Beck, one of the songwriter revelation of the new american
scene
by
Simone Corini
He
exploded with his mixture of different musical genres, like a futuristic
picture, unbounded from any rock frontier. Now, with his latest work Midnite
vultures, Beck Hansen (1970, Los Angeles) is continuing shocking, thanks to
the originality of his proposals, but mainly due to the authenticity of his
compositions.
Born in LA, but grown up in Kansas City with his mother and his grandfather, who
was a preacher, he left soon school for guitar, learning folk songs and blues.
He was influenced by masters like Woody Guthrie, Blind Willy Johnson and Skip
James.
Then he moved to NY City, where he kept in touch with the "anti-folk"
scene. Gone back to California, he debuted in the show business with a couple of
songs, one of them curiously named “Mtv makes me want to smoke crack”. His
first album, Mellow gold (1994) made of him a star of the alternative
rock. " I have no special projects in mind, when I start working in a
studio, and even if I had, ten minutes later I'd have thrown them out of the
window", he said some years ago.
His music is a pot-pourri of rock, hip hop, blues, psychedelic, country and
seventies atmospheres and can be considered as one of the most innovative
proposals of the last years, and also one of the most representative expressions
of the "X-generation", as in the Douglas Coupland's famous book. His
political slogans and his anticomformistic attitude worth him the name of "Dylan
of the new generations".
The commercial success came with the hymn “Loser” (“…I’m a loser,
baby, so why don’t you kill me?”) included in his first record. With his
following two works - the country One foot in the grave and the noisy Stereopathetic
soulmanure - Beck undertook more experimental path. Despite the contract
with the Geffen records, he decided to use the provision that would allow him to
cut non commercial records with indie labels (such as Flipside and K). The two
albums were recorded with small expenses, but they put him in contact with
Calvin Johnson of the Beat Happening and Chris Ballew of the Presidents of the
United States, that worked on Stereopathetic soulmanure.
In 1996 the album O-de-Lay was his return to the folk sounds of the
debut. And it was another success. The record was recommended by all specialized
magazines, it won a lot of "Critic's pool" and received some
nominations for Grammy Awards, best album of the year included.
With the following album Mutations Beck left the well known mixture of
genres for a simplier digression on country, with echoes of "space age
pop", psychedelic and brazilian themes. In the sign of a sort of
"space age folk rock", as he defines it.
His latest work, Midnite vultures, marked another change, towards the
enjoyable funky. Beck twisted his fans once again. The record, dedicated to sex,
is the son of the seventies most funny funk music, crossed by electronic and
hip-hop. It is shaped in an original way by an artist who seems to be more and
more creative.
Songs for parties, jumping rhythms, choirs, bass, "groove" and
falsetto voices are the elements of a work made to be an act of love towards
music and to generate joy in the listener. In fact, as Beck explained,
"good funk is irresistible, it touches the human soul. It's pure joy".
Six albums in five years, the Kansas City songwriter is an omnivorous musician.
A blender of sounds that can create a unique mixture of styles.
