Analysis by Rob Baker, 49ers Clubhouse draft writer:

Plummer is very experienced, starting his last three years. Extremely intelligent winning all academic Big-Ten honours for the past for years. He has great size, athleticism and is very physical.  Has lettered in football, basketball, baseball and track and field in high school. As a high school senior, he recorded 111 tackles and 7 interceptions. An intellegent player who will take time to study film of opposing players.Great in a zone defence and often has trouble on judging the amount of cushion to give receivers on a man on man. Quick and rarely gets beaten deep. He may also need to make more plays on the ball.
Comments: Continued the Buckeyes recent tradition of cornerbacks chosen in the first round. An instant starter.

War Room Analysis
Coverage skills: Has the hips and footwork. Solid overall coverage skills and outstanding athleticism. Should improve tremendously with experience. Shows awareness and good feel in zone coverage, but is better man-to-man player. Size is average, but is strong enough to survive in press coverage. Grade: 7.0
Key and diagnose: Struggles some in this area. Anticipation not where it needs to be. Will gamble some, but does not have good feel for when to jump a route or when to sit back. Grade: 6.0
Closing quickness: Has adequate burst to ball. Does great job recovering because of body control. Is more quick than fast, but has enough closing speed to take risks in coverage. Grade: 6.5
Ball skills: Hands are outstanding, but needs to play ball better. Has excellent leaping ability and will make acrobatic catch, but timing sometimes is off. Grade: 6.0
Run support: Not very strong—more of a drag-down tackler—but a natural athlete who seems willing in run support. Grade: 5.5
Notable: Won prestigious National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholarship.
Final analysis: Despite top ranking, may not be first corner taken; Rashard Anderson has better measurables and upside. Holding up against high level of college competition is most impressive feat. The safe pick in Round 1.

Info from Pro Football Weekly:

Notes: Redshirted in 1995. Served as a backup in '96. Started the last three years. Had 18 stops and two passes broken up in '96; 42 tackles, six passes broken up and five interceptions in '97; 52-17-4 in '98; and 55-9-5 in '99. Has won Academic All-Big Ten honors the past four years and got some All-Big Ten notice in '99.

Positives: Has good intangibles. Supersmart. Studies film and learns tendencies. Has good anticipation through knowledge. A good technician with above-average to good physical tools. Durable and dependable. Makes some plays on the ball. Will support against the run.

Negatives: Is not an exceptional, Shawn Springs type of athlete. Lacks great deep, catch-up speed. Speedy Miami (Fla.) WR Santana Moss made Plummer look as though he were a step slow in the Kickoff Classic. Tends to leave too much cushion when in backed-off, man-on-man coverage.

Summary: A very good prospect but not a great one. A smart, savvy, mature player who has some limitations but still generally plays well.

Info from CBS SportsLine:

Smooth, agile cornerback has been a mainstay in the Buckeyes secondary the past three seasons while starting 37 consecutive games on the outside. Plummer is a heady, smart player who understands the position and his responsibilities in a defensive system.

He has a big frame that he uses well to battle receivers in coverage. He gets excellent use of his long reach and leaping skills to deflect passes in coverage. He has good speed, with the quickness to close on the ball and the hip flexibility to turn and cover deep. During the '99 season, he played in 12 games and registered 55 tackles with 5 interceptions and 9 PBUs in a solid effort, though clubs threw away from him as a senior.

He uses sound technique and anticipates well, using his keen instincts to read pass patterns. He has the strength and quickness to bump and run, with the speed to match receivers stride for stride. He is a solid run support defender, with the ability to get off blockers and make sure tackles.

As a junior, he received Big 10 honorable mention working opposite star corner Antoine Winfield. He was under heavy pressure most of the season but held up remarkably well in coverage. For the year, he posted 52 tackles with 4 TFLs, 4 interceptions and 17 PBUs. He is a student of the game and has been a diligent weight and film room worker who is able to quickly implement new knowledge on the field.

He has graded out consistently high over the past three seasons, showing the intangibles and improvement necessary to play on the outside in the NFL. He is a solid prospect who lacks the top skills to rank with the elite corners of recent seasons but his combination of size, speed, smarts and toughness will allow him to start at the next level. He has played well in big games over his career, from his Sugar Bowl effort as a junior when he made a season high 10 tackles vs Texas A&M.

As a senior, he performed well against arch rival Michigan where he shut down star receiver David Terrell over the game. At the East-West Shrine practices, he displayed fine coverage skills with the speed to recover in the deep game. He helped his cause immensely and guaranteed a top 40 selection off that effort. At a private workout, he ran a 4. time and had a 3 " vertical leap. He tied for the highest with a 39 in the Wonderlic test at the NFL combine.

Quality corner with good skills and the readiness to play as a rookie. Fine, well-developed corner and solid 2nd round pick with the skills to play early in the NFL.

Info from CNN/SI:

Three-year starter. Productive throughout his career. Has decent size. Slender. Has solid technique. Stays low in his backpedal with good balance. Quick footed. Has a strong burst from his break. Shows good hands and ball-play skills. Turns smoothly. Not a blazer, but changes speeds well and does a good job of positioning his body on deep balls. Aware in a zone. Gives a little too much cushion at times. Not active in run force but he's an aggressive player who makes an effort as a tackler -- doesn't shy away from contact. Impressed in the postseason.
