Day 2 Player Analysis
By Robert Baker, 49ers Clubhouse draft writer
Apr.25, 2000

DAY 1 STEALS

1. Oakland - Rnd 3, Pick 27, Ovrl. 89 - DeLawrence Grant, Oregon St, DE
Grant was thought by some as a first round choice, and dropping to 89th overall was a massive steal for the Raiders.
2. San Francisco - 3, 18, 80 - Kevin Barlow, Pittsburgh, HB
Barlow was ment to be the number one pick of the second round before the Chargers-Falcons trade. Then he dropped 48 picks to the Niners.
3. New Orleans - 1, 23, 23 - Deuce McAllister, Mississippi, HB
Should have been a top ten pick, but fell mainly because of injury concerns.
4. Detroit - 2, 19, 50 - Domonic Raiola, Nebraska, C
A guy that should have gone mid way through round one, definatly better than his 50th overall rank.
5. N.Y.Giants - 3, 16, 78 - William Peterson, West.Illinois, CB
A mid second rounder that fell to late third.

BUSTS

1. Oakland - 2, 28, 59 - Marques Tuiasosopo, Washington, QB
Could have waited to round six, may be free agency.
2. Cincinnati - 3, 4, 66 -  Sean Brewer, San Jose St., TE
Why are Cincy so bad? Because they pick a guy that could be found in round five ahead of guys like Tony Stewart, Jabari Holloway and Arthur Love.
3. St. Louis - 1, 29, 29 - Ryan Pickett, Ohio St., DT
Could have been found in round three. Picked ahead of DeLawrence Grant, Willie Howard, Shaun Rogers and Kris Jenkins.
4. Kansas City - 3, 15, 75 - Eric Downing, Syracuse, DT
A round seven pick, and ahead of DeLawrence Grant.
5. Tennessee -  3, 28, 90 - Shad Meier, Kansas St., TE
If they waited two more rounds, he still could have been theirs.

DAY 2 STEALS

1. Oakland  - 7, 29, 229 - Ken Yon-Rambo, Ohio St., WR
Was supposed to be a late round two pick, dropping to late seven was lucky for the Raiders.
2. Buffalo - 5, 13, 144 - Marques Sullivan, Illinois, OT
Late round one turns into round five.
3. New England - 5, 32, 163 - Hakim Akbar, Washington, S
Was fighting for second best saftey, fell into round five, 11th out of the safeties.
4. Tennessee - 7, 32, 232 - Keith Adams, Clemson, LB
Was a definate third rounder.
5. Buffalo - 7, 14, 214 - Reggie Germany, Ohio St., WR
Second great pickup by Buffalo, and second Buckeye reciever to fall from day one to round seven.

BUSTS

1. Philadelphia - 5, 24, 155 - AJ Feeley, Oregon, QB
Could have waited until free agency, or picked up a Josh Booty, Josh Heupel or Cleo Lemon.
2. Kansas City - 4, 13, 108 - George Layne, TCU, FB
Again, why not wait until free agency? Or take a Dan Alexander or Jamar Toombs.
3. Baltimore - 5, 30, 161 - Chris Barnes, New Mexico St., HB
Could have taken him round seven, or free agency.
4. Tampa Bay - 4, 22, 117 - John Howell, Colarado St., S
Taken in free agency would have been a better choice.
5. Tampa Bay - 5, 20, 151 - Ross Hochstein, Nebraska, OG
Again Tampa, wait until free agency.

WHY????

1. Why have San Deigo only had four draft picks reach the Pro Bowl in the past decade?
Trading away Michael Vick is a perfect answer to the question. And only for LaDainain Tomlinson, Tay Cody and Tim Dwight? Am I the only one that sees a big problem with that? Sure LaDainain has potential, but nowhere near as such as Vick does. Atlanta offered Jamal Anderson once too. Sure, they may have been scared off because of what happened with Ryan Leaf, but there are major differences, Vick has mush more potential, Vick works hard and wants to play and play well. Leaf just has tallent and doesn’t want to use it.

2. Why are the Cardinals the armpit of the NFL?
Why pick Leonard Davis, who deserves to be a number 2 overall, when the offensive line is one of their only strengths? A Gerard Warren, Justin Smith would have done wonders, but I spose it is the Cardinals after all.

3. Why Marques Tuiasosoopo in round 2?
Why not wait until day two to even consider him? Could have picked up a Mike McMahon, Jesse Palmer or Chris Weinke. But they made up for it in round three with DeLawrence Grant.

4. Why did New Orleans take Deuce?
Why take Deuce when they gave up a whole draft on Ricky Williams? It will give them a scary double headed monster of a running game, but surely a Freddie Mitchell, Chad Johnson, Jamar Fletcher or Todd Heap would have been better for the franchise that two Pro Bowl caliber HBs.

5. Why should Carolina be shacking?
Well, Atlanta have Michael Vick. New Orleans have Ricky Williams and now Deuce McAllister. San Francisco has the best young defence in the business after adding Andre Carter and Jamie Winborn. St. Louis has their offence, and Damione Lewis, Adam Archuleta, Tommy Polley, Brian Allen and Aeneas Williams. The NFC West is looking like the division NOT to be in when re-alignment comes.

6. Ken Yon-Rambo in round 7?
Sorry, I don’t have an answer!

BEST KEPT SECRETS:

1. San Francsico’s plans for Andre Carter
Every where you read, Bill Walsh was saying how desperately he wanted to trade down and get more players instead of an impact player. Draft day comes and he trades up for a major impact player. Not too many would have seen that one coming. Bill pulls off one last big move, and it’s one to stand up and applaud.

2. Seattle going offense in Round 1
Mike Holmgren said it was defense round one. Then he takes two offensive studs in Koren Robinson and Steve Hutchison. Looks like Bill Walsh has brought him up well.

3. Minnesotta taking Michael Bennett
Dennis Green said there wont be a HB taken round one, and hinted that Michael Bennett wound definatly not be taken, a HB was and it was Bennett.

WORST KEPT SECRETS:

1. Atalanta wanting Michael Vick
If San Deigo waited until draft day, we might have seen a New Orleans-Washington trade repeat. Atlanta was desperate to get Vick, the Chargers were scared of a Ryan Leaf repeat.

2. San Deigo wanting LaDainain Tominson
From the word go, LaDaiain was their number one choice. But when Vick declared early, it threw a spanner in the works.

3. Arizona taking Leonard Davis
Once the rumours came out about Arizona looking at Leonard, it was an obvious choice, Arizona is known for drafting about as well as Bill Clinton tells the truth. So giving them an awesome offensive line, while the rest of the side suck would be very Cardinal-like.

SAN FRANCISCO’S DRAFT

BEST PICK
Kevin Barlow - 3, 18, 80 - Pittsburgh, HB
Filled a big need and could be a surprise packet.

WORST PICK
Menson Holloway - 6, 28, 191 - UTEP, DT
Ennis Davis would have been a much better choice.

2. Again, no OL

Rookie of the Year: Andre Carter  California  DE

COMMENTS
Overall, an undersized group of players, but most are hard working guys that will give there all on every down of every play of every game. Have taken a big risk in the draft, only one player is assured of being even a decent player in the NFL, Carter may be too small, Winborn’s poor decision making, Barlow’s unco-operativeness and fumbling, Wilson’s height and dropping, Holman’s inconsistency, Holloway being undersized and Johnson being too one dimensional. Lincoln seems certain to be a good back-up and special-teamer. But, like last season, it could turn out to be the draft that changes the team, and if it is, the niners are playoff bound.
