The Sporting News - Mock Draft
by Dan Pompei
Apr.11, 2001

Inside of 10 days before the draft, we can make more educated guesses with regards to the 2001 draft. Here is my stab at the first round:

TEAM  PLAYER  POS  SCHOOL
1.  Chargers  Michael Vick  QB  Virginia Tech
There is no other choice, and no good partner with which to trade.
2.  Cardinals  Justin Smith  DE  Missouri
Cardinals officials could trade down, but if they keep the pick they almost have to take a defensive lineman.
3.  Browns  LaDainian Tomlinson RB  TCU
Other possibilities include defensive tackle Gerard Warren and wide receiver David Terrell.
4.  Bengals  Leonard Davis  OT  Texas
After striking out with free agent offensive tackles, Bengals officials will scratch that itch in the draft
5.  Falcons  David Terrell  WR  Michigan
Big plays are the order here. Falcons officials still might make a play for Michael Vick.
6.  Patriots  Gerard Warren DT  Florida
The Patriots also might go for one of the premium offensive tackles, but Warren would be tough to pass.
7.  Seahawks  Richard Seymour  DT  Georgia
The Seahawks could deal down from here, but either way Seymour might go in this spot.
8.  Bears  Andre Carter  DE  Cal
A wide receiver or running back is possible.
9.  49ers  Deuce McAllister  RB  Ole Miss
The 49ers are losing Charlie Garner, so they need a running back. Team officials also are trying to trade down.
10.  Packers  Marcus Stroud  DT  Georgia
Look for the Packers to try to move up to get a higher-rated defensive lineman.
11.  Panthers  Michael Bennett RB  Wisconsin
Panthers officials also could go for quarterback Drew Brees or Deuce McAllister if he still is on the board.
12.  Chiefs  Jamal Reynolds  DE  Florida State
This pick still could end up in the hands of the Rams as part of a trade for Trent Green. Or the Chiefs could trade down in the first round. Other possibilities include drafting a running back or cornerback.
13.  Jaguars  Kenyatta Walker  OT  Florida
After losing Leon Searcy, the Jags need someone to protect Mark Brunell's blindside. Team officials also like linebacker Dan Morgan.
14.  Bills  Steve Hutchinson  OG  Michigan
The Bills will draft an offensive lineman or defensive lineman.
15.  Redskins  Koren Robinson  WR  NC State
He has slipped some and no longer figures to be a top 10 pick.
16.  Steelers  Fred Smoot  CB  Mississippi State
The Steelers also could go for a defensive lineman or quarterback Drew Brees.
17.  Seahawks  Rod Gardner WR  Clemson
The Seahawks must come away from the first round with a receiver.
18.  Lions  Dan Morgan  LB  Miami (Fla.)
Seems natural for Matt Millen to use his first-ever pick on a linebacker.
19.  Jets  Damione Lewis  DT  Miami (Fla.)
The Jets could use a body for their shift to a four-man front. They also need another receiver.
20.  Rams  Nate Clements CB  Ohio State
The Rams figure to take the best-available defensive player.
21.  Bucs  Jeff Backus  OT  Michigan
The Bucs are solid enough that they can take the best available player, and Backus also would fill a need.
22.  Colts  Santana Moss  WR  Miami (Fla.)
Defensive help is the priority, but Colts officials wouldn't pass on a receiver like Moss.
23.  Saints  Chad Johnson WR  Oregon State
A cornerback or safety also would be possible.
24.  Broncos  Todd Heap TE  Arizona State
Heap could be the reincarnation of Shannon Sharpe.
25.  Eagles  Freddie Mitchell  WR  UCLA
The Eagles also could go for a defensive back in this spot.
26.  Dolphins  Drew Brees QB  Purdue
A receiver like Freddie Mitchell also is a possibility here.
27.  Vikings  Will Allen  CB  Syracuse
The Vikings have lost so many players team officials can go in a lot of directions, but they have no bigger need than cornerback.
28.  Raiders  Robert Ferguson  WR  Texas A&M
They need some youth at wide receiver; Ferguson could fill the need.
29.  Rams  Shaun Rogers  DT  Texas
No way the Rams get out of the first round without taking a defensive lineman. The Rams also might trade up.
30.  Giants  Ken Lucas CB  Ole Miss
Lucas would fit the Giants' style. Other possibilities are an offensive lineman or linebacker.
31.  Ravens  Adam Archuleta  Arizona State
The Ravens don't have to draft for need. Another possibility would be center Dominic Raiola.
