Here's a breakdown by position of the players who will be at the combine. We also are listing the top players at each position, and players you might not have heard of who might be a high draft pick.

These rankings can change after the combine because of physicals (players could have injuries or health problems) and workouts (e.g. a player might run faster than had been expected). Last year, for example, Leonard Davis of Texas and LaDainian Tomlinson of TCU both moved up after running well and looked great in the drills. Davis was the second player picked overall (Cardinals); Tomlinson was the fifth (Chargers). 

Note: The combine track is fast — great for running very good times.

Offensive linemen — 53 players invited

High picks you may not have heard of:

In 2001, 61 offensive linemen were invited to the combine -- 39 were drafted; three players not invited were also drafted.

Running backs — 49 players invited

High picks you might not have heard of:
• Adrian Peterson, Georgia Southern
• Brian Westbrook, Villanova

In 2001, 27 running backs were invited to the combine — 18 were drafted; two players not invited were also drafted. 

Quarterbacks — 18 players invited

High picks you might not have heard of:
• Josh McCown, Sam Houston State
• J.T. O'Sullivan, California-Davis
• Greg Zolman, Vanderbilt

In 2001, 17 quarterbacks were invited to the combine — 10 were drafted; one player not invited was also drafted.

Wide receivers — 37 players invited

High picks you might not have heard of:
• Darrell Hill, Northern Illinois
• Kahlil Hill, Iowa
• Cliff Russell, Utah

I think the order of wide receiver will change several times before draft day. The combine workout will be very important to this group of players. 

In 2001, 49 receivers were invited to the combine — 30 were drafted; five players not invited were also drafted.

Tight ends — 22 players invited

High picks you might not have heard of:
• Keith Heinrich, Sam Houston State
• Terry Jones, Alabama

In 2001, 19 tight ends were invited to the combine — 12 were drafted; and two players not invited were also drafted.

Defensive linemen — 42 players invited

• Bryan Thomas, Alabama-Birmingham

In 2001, 53 defensive linemen were invited to the combine — 39 were drafted; 10 players not invited were also drafted.

Linebackers — 34 players invited

• David Thornton, North Carolina

In 2001, 27 players were invited to the combine — 25 were drafted; two players not invited were also drafted. 

Defensive backs — 60 players invited

In 2001, 11 players were invited to the combine — three were drafted; two players not invited were also drafted.
