With the evolution of the CE devices it has changed also the way to perform an Hard Reset of your unit.As usually the user hopes to not need to hard reset his unit (loosing all stored data/programs) may happen that, when this become necessary, the user does non remember how to do this operation.
The first type of CE device, that used removable main battery and backup battery, usually required to remove both types of battery to fully reset the unit to the default settings. This was quite intuitive even if you needed to open your device to extract the batteries. You had also to remove and reinstall power sources in the correct order to avoid to discharge the backup battery.(Remove: 1st Backup battery - 2nd Main Battery - Reinstall: 1st Main Battery - 2nd Backup Battery)
With the coming of the units with fixed (not replaceble) battery the way to perform an Hard Reset changes. Usually that devices had a switch or slider command to activate to fully reset the unit's power. This new way is. for example to apply to the Compaq 3xxx line where you can find the command at the bottom of the unit. This system was more easy as you did not need to open your device but to use a fixed battery was not a good solution.
The last CE device came back to the original scheme with separate Main/Backup batteries but still avoid to remove the power sources to performe an Hard Reset. In this case you had to push and hold two front button (the left and right at the bottom) for some second and to insert the Stylus in the soft reset command's hole. This operating way (that applies to HP 5xxx and 2xxx lines for example) allows so to not remove battery and to reset the unit easily.
