Windows CE and Pocket PCMany things have been written, good or bad, about the Operative system WinCe and if it could be the way to beat the Palm market's winner. I do not want therefore to repeat here well known things. What can we say now about Windows CE ? NSBasic I will not check herein the upgraded features of the Pocket PC, that are API for NSBasic on ARM now available but not always the best, i can say only that with the new Vers.3.0 Microsoft finally understoud what exactly is or may be his own product. If you remember the version 1.0 you will note that WinCE has been one of the biggest Bluff ever created by Microsoft. They launched in the market "Something" assuming that it should a winner because it was marked as Microsoft products only. Wishing to win the contest they reduced the available memory with the only result to get the units powered by WinCE unable to work. The version 2.0 was better but only because the WinCE devices were able now to work with more memory available. Using the further version ( 2.11 for palm units included ) the hardware producers, working with Microsoft, started to better understand the real possibility of this new operating system and so some of their devices have been able to meet better the users' requests. They created good HPC (sometime called subnotebooks) for a market that was not ready and unfortunately too expensive for the users, units as the Casio105 with interesting multimedia features, or the Compaq 1500 serie that was the first that could compete for dimensions with the Palm 3com units even if with a black and white screen only. With Pocket PC we reach the version 3.0 of WinCE. The number 3 has been often a lucky numbers for the Microsoft's programs and it could be so in this case also. Anyway Pocket PC does not appear to be the killer product that Microsoft, waited to win the contest as it is very difficult to cancel from the users' mind the previous failed attempts with WinCE and to do better of the Palm's, simple, easy to handle, low power requiring unit. What will be the future of Pocket PC and why programming for CE 3.0 ? This is only an idea of mine but i think that on the base of this operating system, obviously better optimized, will be created a lot of new devices that will can be able to modify the market's trend. A little sample of this is the iPaq di Compaq that, even if it is quite near to a commom palm PC, as we know introduce many new ideas to use this units being cunstomizable and expandible following the user's needs remaining anyways easy to use and to handle. And this is the start only. If Palm will be able to ................ but this is another story.
