-14-

Robert Hennel pepper castor this silver pepper castor has typical bright cut decorations and was made in London in 1789 by Robert Hennel. Robert Hennel belonged to a family of silversmiths operating in London from 18th century till present times. Robert was apprentice in 1756 of his father David, founder of the dinasty. He deposited his hallmark in 1772, with his son David in 1795 and with David and Samuel in 1802. He was active as silversmith till his death in 1811. Robert Hennel was a refined smallworker, specialized in production of baskets, salts and centerpieces.
The castor lacks of liner and bears under the base full hallmarks for London, date 1789 (O), lion passant for sterling silver, duty mark in the form of the head of King George III and RH for Robert Hennel.
Duty mark was introduced in 1784 when England imposed to pay a tax on silver made objects. The tax was removed in 1890.
It measures 3 in. (cm. 7,5) and was bought from a Canadian dealer through internet.
