sauce boat
Austria
-67-
this silver sauce boat was made in Budapest (Austria - Hungary) in 1863, silversmith GG. The shape is quite unusual for a sauce boat and, maybe, this is the Continental equivalence of the English "pap boat". In 18th and 19th century the "pap boat" was used by parents or nursemaids to feed a baby. Pap was a thick mixture of gruel based on milk.
The boat is 6 1/2 in. long (cm. 16) and was bought from an English dealer through internet. Here is illustrated also an English pap boat, London, circa 1750.
