When: 4 June 2006
Bands used: UHF, 6m, 10m, 17m
Antenna: UHF/6m, whip; 10/17m, simple vertical
Open to: SE to S
DX: UHF 150km (with the whip!)
Facilities: 1m tall tree on the summit can help to support a lightweight mast for VUHF beam or HF vertical/wire.
Comments: easy to reach by car (60' from Torino) and 1h30 walk. Hike from Colle del Lys [45°10.686'N; 7°22,972'E; 1319m] on the service road for some 3km (this road is mountainbike-friendly), ascend to Colle Portia and follow the well marked trail until you find the arrow for "Il Pilone". Do not take the trail going to the right few metres above Colle Portia!!
The summit is really small (let's say 9 m2) and not flat at all. There's a 1 m2 pillar in the center. It is safe if you're alone or with a partner, but with 3-4 people you can't move around. Not the best location for serious contesting.
For relaxing HF work you should consider operating from the meadow underneath the summit (already outside of SOTA requirements), or Colle Portia. Both places have 5-6m tall trees to support antennas, but can get crowded in Summer afternoons. Colle Portia offers a shelter in case of bad WX.
GSM coverage: some.

In case you stay and operate from Colle del Lys on a warm Sunday...
