Bari, the capital city of Puglia (Apulia), is the second largest continental city of Southern Italy. The town was originally part of “Magna Graecia” and later became the Roman city of  Barium. In the Middle Age, Bari's greatest importance dates from the time when it became, in 852, a seat of the Saracen power being Swadan the first emir, and in 885, the residence of the Byzantine governor. In 1071 it was captured by Robert Guiscard. In 1095 Peter the Hermit preached the first crusade there. In 1156 it was razed to the ground, and has several times suffered destruction.

The city consists of three parts: the closely built old town on the peninsula to the north, with the splendid medieval monuments: the Basilica of San Nicola (Saint Nicholas) founded in 1087 to receive the relics of this saint which were brought from Myra in Lycia and now lie beneath the altar in the crypt; the Cathedral of San Sabino and the Swabian castle; the Murattiano town to the south (with its stunning promenade on the sea), major shopping district (with the famous Via Sparano and Via Argiro) and heart of the city, which is laid out on a rectangular plan; the more modern chaotic city surrounds this and is the result of rapid development during the '60s and '70s.
Outside Bari, Puglia's most striking tourist attractions are the Trulli district around Alberobello (a UNESCO World Heritage Site); Lecce, famed for its baroque beauty, all golden sandstone and elegant XVII century architecture; the intriguing castles of Frederick II, including the famous masterpiece of mystical symmetry, Castel del Monte (another UNESCO World Heritage Site).
