The data below provide an example of selection rules
at work. These Raman spectra were taken on a single crystal sample, with the
orientation of the crystal axes known. The label for each denotes the
polarization of the incident and scattered light. So, "ZZ" means that
the incident and scattered polarizations are parallel to the crystal's Z axis;
XY means that the incident polarization is parallel to the crystal's X axis
while the scattered polarization is parallel to the crystal's Y axis. A prime
indicates an axis at an angle of 45 degrees with respect to the crystal axis.
The narrow peak near 240 wavenumbers' Raman shift, due to the vibration of the
La/Sr ions, appears in ZZ, XX, and X'X' scattering conditions, but not in the
XY or X'Y' conditions. This selection rule reflects the symmetry of the tensor
which represents this particular excitation. It is
A 0 0
0 A 0
0 0 C
reflecting the tetragonal symmetry of the crystal. In
this case the X and Y crystal axes are equivalent, while the lattice constant
in the Z direction is longer. In fact, this tensor possesses the full
tetragonal symmetry. To see where the selection rule comes in, just write down
the vector components of the desired polarization conditions and take the inner
product with the tensor:
(X) (X)
1 A 0 0 1
0 0 A 0 0 = A;
0 0 0 C 0
(Y) (X)
0 A 0 0 1
1 0 A 0 0 = 0.
0 0 0 C 0
One part of the process is the part I have left out so
far is determining the actual displacement pattern of the ions corresponding to
a given peak. For the present case, simple inspection is sufficient to show
that the vertical displacement of the La/Sr ions has the full tetragonal
symmetry of the above tensor.
However, a similar vertical displacement of the apical oxygen ions also shares
the full tetragonal symmetry. A priori, there is no way to know which
combination of these modes contributes to a given Raman peak. This question
brings the analysis beyond group theory, into the realm of lattice
dynamics--the modelling of the forces between the ions in the unit cell. In the
present example, the oxygen and La/Sr displacements are believed to separate
completely into two different modes.
To a good approximation Raman scattering occurs from zero-wavevector
phonons. However, to the extent that the phonon wavevector differs from zero,
phonon selection rules will deviate from the zero-wavevector rules and will
depend on the angle between the direction of propagation of the incident and
scattered light. For "optical phonons," which have zero dispersion at
the zone center, any direction dependence in the Raman shift is quite small. On
the other hand, for the "acoustic phonons," which have a linear
dispersion near the zone center, the angular dependence of the Raman shift is
more pronounced. Because the phonon wavevector is still quite small the
acoustic phonon will have a small energy. Raman scattering from low-energy
acoustic phonons is known as Brillouin Scattering. Brillouin scattering
manifests as extra phonons, at low energy. The essential difference between
Raman and Brillouin scattering is the sensitivity of the "Brillouin
shift" to the relative angle of scattering.
The
principles of determining the selection rules are the same, but the subgroup of
the crystal space group one uses to enumerate the Brillouin phonons is no
longer the group of the zone center, but rather the "group of the
wavevector" of the phonon doing the scattering. For example, if the phonon
wavevector occurs along one of the fourfold-symmetric directions in a
tetragonal crystal, then the point P in the Brillouin zone corresponding
to the phonon momentum has only twofold symmetry corresponding to reflection
across the line between P and the zone center. When we enumerate the
modes, we include only those symmetry elements which preserve the wavevector P.
Otherwise, the procedure is identical to that described above for the zone
center.
Fig 1 (left) - this superconducting
transistor-like device consists of several layers. It works as follows: Bound
electron pairs in the first superconducting layer (S0) are broken apart by a
voltage. Some of the single electrons (or quasiparticles as they are known in
quantum parlance) tunnel into a second superconducting layer (S1). If this
particle diffuses into a normal (nonsuperconducting) layer N, it can give up
its energy to free electrons, which in turn can tunnel into a further
superconducting layer (S2) where they constitute a current much amplified
compared to the original input current.

molto amplificata confrontata alla corrente originale dell' input.

Liquid droplets having a nominal diameter of 10
mm are atomized (made into a fine spray) within 300-500 milliseconds when
placed on a vibrating diaphragm. The droplet surface undergoes a hierarchy of
instabilities that lead to the formation of surface waves and the atomization
is a result of the rapid ejection of small secondary droplets from the crests
of these waves. The evolution and rate of ejection depend on the interplay
betweeen the primary droplet and the vibrating diaphragm.

Nanobalance application
for carbon nanotubes: a mass attached at the end of a nanotube shifts its
resonance frequency. If the nanotube is calibrated (i.e., its spring constant
known), it is possible to measure the mass of the attached particle. In this
example, the resonant frequency was 968 kHz, compared to 3.28 MHz when unloaded
(calculated). The mass of this carbon sphere was then determined to be 22±6
femtograms (one fg is a quadrillionth of a gram). Direct estimate based on
volume and the density of amorphous graphite gives a mass close to 30 fg.
Induced resonance of a
nanotube. On left, the nanotube is at rest: the blurring in the picture is due
to thermal vibration. The central picture shows this nanotube excited in its
fundamental vibrational mode (530 KHz). It is possible to go even further and
excite its second harmonic (3.01 MHz). Both the frequency ratio and the shapes
correspond reasonably well to what is calculated for a clamped beam.

Nanobalance

According to a new theory, the existence of
hypothetical extra spatial dimensions might be revealed in high energy
collisions in accelerator experiments in the following manner. Some of the
collision energy might be converted into a graviton, which would disappear into
one of the extra dimensions of what would now be called a "megaverse".
This would not be detectable and it would appear to experimenters as if the
energy of the collision had not been conserved.
Measuring a Fragile Molecule
|
Although
theory has long predicted that two helium atoms can form a diatomic molecule,
or dimer, experimental evidence was elusive. Traditional probes of atomic
structure don't work for helium because they tear apart the fragile molecule
like a butterfly blasted with a shotgun. Now, in the 11 SeptemberPRL,
researchers describe a non-destructive technique that confirms that the atoms
in a helium dimer form the longest and weakest chemical bond known, and the
largest two-atom molecule.
Helium is
only one step in the periodic table away from hydrogen, which forms nature's
most common dimer. "Helium is a very fundamental atom," says Harvard
University's Isaac Silvera, "so we can make very accurate calculations of
its bound states." Those calculations showed that the helium-helium attractive
force should create a dimer state with a tiny binding energy of about 10-7
eV , compared with 5 eV for diatomic hydrogen.
The weak
bond makes it nearly impossible to examine the helium dimer. Traditional
particle probes of atomic structure--microwave, infrared, and visible light
spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and electron scattering--are too powerful; the
necessary electron and photon collisions instantly smash the fragile dimer in
two. So it wasn't until 1994 that Peter Toennies and his colleagues at the Max
Planck Institute in Göttingen, Germany, convinced most researchers that the
dimer existed at all. They produced a diffraction pattern from an ultracold
beam of helium atoms and dimers, but this experiment didn't measure the bond
length, the crucial parameter from which the binding energy is derived. In 1996
Ron Gentry and his colleagues at the University of Minnesota sifted helium
through a nanoscale sieve and esitmated 62 Å for the bond length, a value some
experts considered to be an upper limit.
Now a
team led by Toennies and Gerhard Hegerfeldt of the University of Göttingen has
filled in the last piece of the helium dimer puzzle. To measure the dimer bond
length, they launched a 4.5 K beam of helium atoms towards a diffraction
grating. In flight, about 5% of the atoms formed dimers as the beam cooled to
less than 1 mK. On passing through the 70-nm-wide slits in the grating, the
cold beam produced a series of alternating large and small diffraction peaks
corresponding to helium atoms and the helium dimer, respectively. The peak
intensities indicated a bond length of 52 Å, remarkably close to the classical
estimate from four years ago. "It is like putting calipers on the
molecule," says Toennies. And a simple quantum mechanical computation led
to the binding energy of 9.5 × 10-8 eV.
"This
is a beautiful, elegant, and gratifying confirmation of our work," says
Gentry. Dick Manson of Clemson University in South Carolina agrees that it
confirms the previous estimate based on classical physics, while adding quantum
corrections. Silvera is also impressed. "Toennies's team has done a very
nice experiment and analysis," he says. "It completes the picture of
the helium dimer."

elio è un atomo molto fondamentale, "
dice Isaac Silvera, " in modo
da noi dell' università de Harvard può

molto esatte delle relative condizioni

calcolazioni hanno indicato che la forza
attraente dell' elio-elio

dimero dell' elio, rispettivamente. Le intensità peak hanno indicato
una lunghezza schiava di 52 Å, notevolmente
vicino alla valutazione
classica da quattro anni fa. " è come mettere i compassi sulla
molecola, " dice Toennies. E un calcolo meccanico di quantum semplice
ha condotto all' energia di legame 9,5 di ×
10-8 eV. " questo è un
bello, elegante e la conferma gratifying del
nostro lavoro, " dice
Gentry.

Surfing in an Atom's Wake
|
In 1993,
physicists at IBM created the picturesque "quantum corral" by placing 48
iron atoms in a circle on a copper surface. The famous images dramatically
displayed the standing waves made by surface electrons inside the corral. Now,
in the 2 OctoberPRL, a team shows that these same waves allow atoms
dropped on the surface to interact with one another over long distances. Their
scanning tunneling microscope (STM) data show that this electron-mediated force
is oscillatory in space--alternately attractive and repulsive as one atom
"rides" the electron waves produced by the other. The interaction
leads to rings of attraction and repulsion surrounding each atom, so the
results may improve understanding of the formation of atomic-scale structures
on surfaces.
Theories
dating back to 1967 have suggested that electrons in a metal generate so-called
indirect interactions between adatoms--atoms sitting on a surface that aren't
part of the solid's crystal structure. A 1978 paper by Nobel Laureate Walter
Kohn of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and K. H. Lau predicted
that, if the electrons are in specific quantum states at the surface, the force
diminishes with the inverse square of the distance between the adatoms--a much
longer-range interaction than exists otherwise. Lau and Kohn also expected the
force to be oscillatory (similar to other indirect interactions), with a period
related to the surface electrons' wavelength. Under these conditions, the
potential energy surface surrounding each adatom looks something like a still
picture of the circular waves around a stone thrown in a pond. The wavelike
surface electrons scattering from the adatom create ring-shaped troughs of
attraction in the potential energy function, and neighboring adatoms are most
likely to collect at these troughs. Until now, no one had directly measured
this unusual long-range, oscillatory interaction predicted by Lau and Kohn.
The
problem, explains Gerhard Meyer of the Free University of Berlin (FUB), is that
these long-range forces between adatoms are so weak; the corresponding energies
are less than 1 meV. Meyer is part of a team that captured the oscillatory
interaction by taking 3400 STM images of copper adatoms on a copper surface at
temperatures between 9 and 21 K. They waited 30 seconds between images to allow
the adatoms to hop to new positions. For each image the team measured the
distances between isolated pairs of adatoms and collected a large histogram
showing the likelihood of each separation distance, from 0 to 7.5 nm.
"What you see is that certain distances are preferred," says Meyer.
The team,
led by FUB's Karl-Heinz Rieder, found an oscillatory potential energy function
as one moves away from an adatom, with a period (1.5 nm) and decay rate
(inverse square) in agreement with the 1978 predictions. To further verify
their results, the team used the STM to directly image the electron waves
surrounding pairs of adatoms. The properties of the scattered electron waves
were in rough agreement with the authors' theoretical predictions.
"I
was thrilled" to see the paper, says Ted Einstein of the University of
Maryland in College Park. Although there have been other hints of the effect,
he says, "this is really clear-cut and beautiful." Einstein points
out that it is unusual for an oscillatory interaction to be so long-ranged and
to have circular symmetry and says it might have practical consequences for
interactions between single-atom-high steps in atomic-scale devices.

del microscopio di traforo di esame (STM)
indicano che questa forza

circondano ogni atomo, in modo

In
queste circostanze, la superficie potenziale
di energia che circonda
ogni adatom osserva qualcosa come un'
immagine tranquilla delle onde
circolari intorno ad una pietra gettata in

della superficie del wavelike che spargono
dal adatom creano le
depressioni a sezione circolare dell'

potenziale di energia ed i adatoms vicini
sono più probabili
raccogliere a queste depressioni. Finora, nessuno direttamente
avevano misurato questi interazione insolita

lungo raggio e oscillatori. Il problema, spiega Gerhard Meyer dell'
università libera di Berlino (FUB), è che
queste forze a lungo

Delay is a Death Sentence
|
Fireflies
blink synchronously, lasers are "mode-locked" for amplification, and
cardiac pacemaker cells maintain a steady heartbeat. In each case, the
interaction of separate oscillators leads to important collective behavior.
Although physicists have been investigating so-called coupled oscillators for
centuries, there has been relatively little study of the effects of time
delays, which always occur to some extent as one oscillator communicates with
another. In the 16 OctoberPRL a team shows that a very simple electronic
circuit containing two identical oscillators coupled with a time delay can
experience "amplitude death"--the oscillators essentially stop each
other cold. The authors also found several other new phenomena resulting from
the delay, all of which could be applied in areas from sophisticated laser
electronics design to research on heart attacks.
Ever
since the Dutch physicist Christiaan Huygens noticed in 1665 that two pendulum
clocks in his room tended to swing in synch, researchers have been fascinated
by coupled oscillators. Physicists and mathematicians have now learned that,
depending on the strength of the coupling between two oscillators and the
difference between their natural frequencies, a range of phenomena can occur:
synchronous oscillation, incoherent oscillation, or amplitude death. But no one
had seen amplitude death for a pair of identical-frequency oscillators until
Abhijit Sen and his colleagues at the Institute for Plasma Research in Bhat,
India, predicted it theoretically for oscillators coupled through a delay [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 5109 (1998)]. When amplitude
death popped out of the equations, "that was a big surprise," recalls
Sen. Many real-world coupled oscillators--like fireflies and pacemaker
cells--have nearly identical frequencies, so their predictions seemed
significant.
Now Sen
and his colleagues have coupled two so-called LCR circuits--which
oscillate indefinitely thanks to nonlinear resistors--through a digital delay
and verified their predictions, while observing additional behaviors as well.
Just as they had predicted, the team found several ranges of coupling strengths
and time delays that caused the oscillators to poop out. Each range was distinct
from the others, so the researchers call them "death islands"--a
feature not seen in systems without a delay. They also observed
"antiphase" oscillations, which are the electronic equivalent of two
pendulums swinging alternately toward and away from one another. Normally only
the in-phase or the antiphase mode can exist in this type of nonlinear
oscillator, but not both. Sen points out that such flatlining or antiphase
behavior could be destructive for a set of coupled lasers, so understanding
these phenomena may help electrical engineers.
Paul
Linsay, formerly of MIT, cautions that all of these effects pertain to
"limit-cycle" oscillators--those that always tend toward a specific
frequency and amplitude--and not to simple harmonic oscillators. He says that
coupled oscillator equations with time delays are usually "murderously
hard to solve," so delay effects have been largely ignored in the past.
Linsay thinks the new results could be applicable to coupled systems of
periodically firing neurons, such as those in the brain. This work suggests
that a set of firing neurons that represent a memory might suddenly stop.
"Maybe that's why you forget things for a while," he speculates,
"then you remember them two days later."

An Ideal Gas of Beads
|
Violently
shaking a box of breakfast cereal does not make the particles act exactly like
molecules in an ideal gas, but there are similarities. According to the 23
OctoberPRL there is a simple mathematical expression for the
distribution of particle velocities in a shaken box of steel beads which--like
the formula for gas molecules--depends only on the average speed of the
particles and not on the density or details of the shaking. To model problems
such as grain motion in silos, soil shifting in earthquakes, and dry foods
mixing in processing plants, physicists studying granular materials want
equations as simple and comprehensive as those for gases and fluid motion. The
new results suggest that such a theory may be possible.
The
century-old kinetic theory of gases assumes the gas molecules are in
equilibrium with their surroundings--they exchange energy with the outside
world each time a molecule collides with a wall. But the particles in a
granular material are not in equilibrium; they constantly soak up energy from
the shaking source because they heat up a bit with each interparticle
collision, explains Narayanan Menon of the University of Massachusetts at
Amherst. It's not obvious that a kinetic-type theory for granular materials is
even possible for such a nonequilibrium system, Menon says.
In search
of some "universal" behavior, Menon and colleague Florence Rouyer
used a high-speed video camera to measure the velocities of 1.6-mm-diameter
steel beads confined between two vertical, clear plastic plates separated by
1.7 mm and sealed around the edges. Their mechanical shaker vibrated the cell
vertically with accelerations up to 58 times that of gravity and speeds up to
1.8 m/s. Above a shaking speed of 1 m/s Menon says the particles "forget
the influence of the boundaries" that pump in energy from above and below.
Under
these conditions, Rouyer and Menon found a simple, bell-shaped distribution for
the probability of each horizontal velocity, although not the classic Gaussian
curve from kinetic theory. Instead their distribution is broader, with more
particles having higher velocities. But the distribution's shape was unchanged
by variations in the frequency and amplitude of the shaking and the density of
the particles. Even a circular cell gave the same distribution as a square one.
And just as with an ideal gas, the distribution's width depended only upon the
average speed of a particle--the granular equivalent of the temperature in a
gas.
Although
others have measured non-Gaussian velocity distributions for granular
materials, only one other group--led by Jerry Gollub of Haverford College in
Pennsylvania--has found such a consistent shape [Chaos 9,
682 (1999)], the same distribution Rouyer and Menon observed.
Other researchers have reported distributions that depend on the parameters of
the shaking, although it remains unclear why the results vary so much. Rouyer
and Menon's velocity distributions also agree in part with predictions from a
recent theoretical attempt at a kinetic-like theory of granular materials.
Troy
Shinbrot of Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ, calls the work
"intriguing," especially because the velocity distribution is
independent of acceleration. He hopes others will be able to test the effects
of other variables, such as the type of driving waveform (other than
sinusoidal) and the thickness of the granular material. Gollub says the results
are important because much of the large literature on statistics of granular
materials is theoretical. The experiments are a "significant
improvement" over his own work, he adds, and the agreement between the two
is a sign that Rouyer and Menon are on the right track.
Un gas ideale dei branelli F.
Rouyer/Univ. del ricochet del
Massachusetts. Un insieme dei branelli violentemente agitati esibisce
una distribuzione di velocità simile a
quella d'un gas ideale, senza
riguardo alla velocità d' agitazione,
suggerente che una teoria
fondamentale dei materiali granulari può
essere possibile. Una video
macchina fotografica e un calcolatore ad
alta velocità hanno bloccato
i movimenti dei branelli, indicati qui
durante la spettrografia di
massa 5,5.
particolari dell' agitazione. Per modellare i problemi quale
movimento del grano in sili, terreno che
spostano nei terremoti ed
alimenti asciutti che mescolano negli
impianti di lavorazione, i
fisici che studiano i materiali granulari
desiderano le equazioni
semplici e complete quanto quelle per i gas
ed il movimento fluido. I
nuovi risultati indicano che una tal teoria
può essere possibile. La
teoria cinetica di cento anni dei gas
presuppone che le molecole del
gas siano nell' equilibrio con i loro
dintorni -- scambiano l' energia
equilibrio;
si assorbiscono costantemente l' energia proveniente
dalla sorgente d' agitazione perché
riscaldano un bit con ogni
scontro del interparticle, spiegano Narayanan
Menon dell' università
di Massachusetts a Amherst. Non è evidente che una teoria del
cinetico-tipo per i materiali granulari è
persino possibile per un
tal sistema di nonequilibrium, Menon
dice. Alla ricerca d'un certo
comportamento " universale ",
Menon ed il collega Firenze Rouyer hanno
usato una video macchina fotografica di alta
velocità per misurare le
velocità dei branelli d'acciaio
1.6-mm-diameter limitati fra due
verticali, le piastre di plastica libere
separate da 1,7 millimetri e
sigillate intorno ai bordi. Il loro agitatore meccanico ha vibrato
verticalmente la cellula con le
accelerazioni fino a 58 volte che di
gravità ed accelera a 1,8 m/s. Sopra una velocità d' agitazione di
1 m/s Menon dice che le particelle "
dimenticano l' influenza dei
contorni " quella pompa nell' energia
da suddetto e sotto. In queste
circostanze, Rouyer e Menon hanno trovato
una distribuzione semplice e
a campana per la probabilità di ogni
velocità orizzontale, anche se
non la curva gaussiana classica dalla teoria
cinetica.
costante [ caos 9, 682 (1999)
], la stessa distribuzione Rouyer e Menon
osservati. Altri
ricercatori hanno segnalato le distribuzioni
che dipendono dai
parametri dell' agitazione, anche se rimane
poco chiara perchè i
risultati variano così tanto. Le distribuzioni di velocità di Menon
e di Rouyer egualmente sono conforme in
parte con le previsioni da un
tentativo teorico recente di a cinetico-come
la teoria dei materiali
granulari.
Troy Shinbrot dell' università di Rutgers in Piscataway,
NJ, chiama il lavoro " che
incuriosisce, " particolarmente perché la
distribuzione di velocità è indipendente da
accelerazione. Spera
destra.
Single Atoms on Demand
|
Quantum
computers of the future may rifle through calculations by altering the quantum
states of scores of atoms confined within clever traps. However, atomic
physicists must first learn how to place a few neutral atoms into such traps
and control their tendencies to escape or randomly change their quantum states
during the manipulation. In the 30 OctoberPRL, German researchers report
that they successfully transferred an exactly known number of cesium atoms from
a trap that uses lasers and magnetic fields into a calmer snare that uses only
a single laser beam. The technique holds promise as a source of one
well-behaved atom at a time.
Both
traps are popular tools for atomic physicists. The first, called a
magneto-optical trap, or MOT, relies on radiation pressure from several laser
beams to confine atoms within a magnetic field. Atoms absorb photons from the
lasers and then re-emit photons in random directions. This process slows the
atoms until they settle in a cold knot at the center of the magnetic field. By
contrast, the second trap uses a single laser. In this so-called optical dipole
trap, the oscillating electric field of the laser polarizes neutral atoms and
attracts them, just as a charged plastic rod attracts neutral hairs or paper
shavings. The attraction is highest at the sharp focal point of the laser beam.
An optical trap is more fragile than a MOT, but atoms linger more quietly there
because the laser is tuned to a frequency at which the atoms do not absorb
photons.
Physicists
have shuffled neutral atoms between the two traps, but not with high efficiency
or with precise knowledge of how many atoms were confined. The new study by
Daniel Frese and his colleagues at the University of Bonn accomplished both
feats. The team aligned the centers of their MOT and optical dipole trap with
unprecedented precision and made the MOT unusually small, so that the trap
sizes were similar. They first isolated a few cesium atoms within the MOT,
confining them with a strong magnetic field to a clump about 10 µm wide.
Fluorescent emissions from the atoms, measured by a sensitive photon detector,
revealed the number of trapped atoms--usually between 1 and 10. Then they
switched on the optical dipole laser and switched off the MOT system a few
milliseconds later. All of the atoms stayed trapped, suspended by the laser
light alone. When the team switched the MOT back on, the fluorescent emissions
showed that none of the atoms fled for times as long as one minute.
The
team's next step is to transport the trapped atoms a few millimeters to another
device, such as a cavity containing one photon. Coauthor Victor Gomer envisions
such a system as a ready source of atoms for experiments in quantum information
processing. "It will be possible to deliver a given number of atoms on
demand," Gomer says. The gentleness of the optical dipole trap will let
researchers manipulate the atomic states of such atoms and observe their
quantum dynamics for many seconds--hardly possible in a MOT.
"I'm
absolutely delighted with this paper," says retired physicist Arthur
Ashkin of Bell Laboratories/Lucent Technologies in Holmdel, New Jersey. The
technique should make it possible to study controlled interactions between
single atoms and single photons, says Ashkin, who pioneered the optical dipole
trap. "This is quantum mechanics at its ultimate. I think the community
will jump on it."
atomic
beams, which could maximize the advantages of atoms over photons.
The two
teams--one based at the University of Arizona in Tucson and one at the
University of Innsbruck, Austria--propose essentially the same recipe. Imagine
atoms that have three spin states: 0, +1, and -1. Start with a Bose-Einstein
condensate of atoms entirely in the spin 0 state, and raise its energy (with
microwaves) above that of the +1 and -1 states. The condensate will no longer
be in the ground state, and atoms will tend to drop to the lowest energy states
via spin-conserving collisions. Pairs of spin 0 atoms will collide and generate
pairs of entangled spin +1 and -1 atoms, and these will increase their kinetic
energy (speed) to compensate for their loss of "spin energy." After
each of these collisions, the two fast moving entangled atoms will then head
straight out of the atom trap in opposite directions.
Han Pu of
Arizona says that for a cigar shaped condensate, most of the entangled pairs
will emerge as two beams along the cigar axis, and additional traps at each end
could capture a large number of escaping atoms. These clouds could serve as
plentiful sources for experiments. The Innsbruck team, led by Ignacio Cirac and
Peter Zoller, calculates the unusual statistical properties of the beams: The
total spin is exactly zero, and the fluctuations about this value are much
smaller than would be expected for any classical set of atoms.
Mikhail
Lukin of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics says the results
"may open a new chapter in the physics of non-classical states."
According to Lukin, the suppressed fluctuations may lead to atomic clocks with
unparalleled precision, since today's best clocks are limited by fluctuations.
As for the experimental implementation of the proposals, Pu says at least one
lab has already gone part-way, and experimentalists need only use current
technology. "All the pieces are already there," says Pu.
Singoli atomi
limitato dai campi magnetici e dai
laser. I fisici tedeschi hanno
inventato un modo trasferire tutti quegli
atomi in una presa che usa
un singolo fascio laser -- una regolazione
più promising per la
manipolazione di quantum.
I calcolatori di quantum del futuro possono
fucile con le calcolazioni
alterando le condizioni di quantum di massa
di atomi limitati
all'interno delle prese intelligenti. Tuttavia, i fisici atomici
devono in primo luogo imparare come disporre
alcuni atomi neutri in
tali prese e gestire le loro tendenze
fuoriuscire o cambiare a caso le
loro condizioni di quantum durante la
manipolazione. Nei 30
OctoberPRL, i ricercatori tedeschi segnalano
limitare gli atomi all'interno
caricato attrae i capelli
erano simili. In primo
luogo hanno isolato alcuni atomi del cesio
all'interno del MOT,
quantum. " sarà possibile
trasportare un dato numero di atomi a
richiesta, " Gomer dice. Il
gentleness della presa ottica del dipolo
lascerà i ricercatori
maneggiare le condizioni atomiche di tali
atomi ed osservare il loro
dynamics di quantum per molti secondi --
appena possibili in un MOT.
" assolutamente mi diletto con questa
carta, " dice il fisico
pensionato Arthur Ashkin delle tecnologie
della Bell
Laboratories/Lucent
in Holmdel, New Jersey.

For
cosmologists the old Chinese curse, "May you live in interesting
times," is beginning to seem all too appropriate. According to the latest
evidence, a mysterious "antigravity" force--the so-called dark
energy--appears to be a major component of the cosmos. The dark energy density
is thought to remain constant in time, while matter continues to be
"diluted" as the Universe expands. That raises a question: Why do we
happen to live in the "interesting times" when the density of dark
energy and that of matter happen to be similar, when one is not overwhelmed by
the other? That's the riddle a team of theorists have tackled in the 14
NovemberPRL, and they claim to have found a simple explanation involving
only the most basic parameters from high energy physics.
The team,
led by Nima Arkani-Hamed of the University of California at Berkeley, focuses
on two key energy scales: the so-called Planck mass MPl ~ 1018
GeV, at which quantum gravity effects become important, and the electroweak
mass MEW ~ 103 GeV, characteristic of the energy
at which the electromagnetic and weak interactions become unified. They start
by noting that these two mass scales can be combined to produce a roughly
accurate value for the dark energy density: (MEW2/MPl)4.
(Energy density has units of GeV4 in this system.) Using
supersymmetry and other particle physics concepts, they sketch out some ideas
for why these two fundamental parameters might be so easily related to the dark
energy density.
They then
point out another apparent coincidence: the similarity between the matter
density of the Universe and a third important cosmological parameter, the
energy density of heat radiation. Most of the matter in the Universe is thought
to be dark matter, but despite its mysterious nature, cosmologists believe they
understand in general terms how the density of all matter evolves as the
Universe expands and cools. Using the century-old Stefan-Boltzmann law, which
relates temperature to the corresponding amount of radiation, Arkani-Hamed and
his colleagues estimated the temperature of the Universe at which the amounts
of matter and radiation should coincide. Arkani-Hamed explains that the result
is about MEW2/MPl, which works
out to 10 K, close to the Universe's current temperature.
According
to the Stefan-Boltzmann law, at that temperature the matter and radiation
energy densities are (MEW2/MPl)4--exactly
the formula the team found gives roughly the correct value for the dark energy
density. In other words, we should now be living at a time when the energy
density of radiation, dark matter, and dark energy should all coincide, just as
the observations suggest.
The
result is a bold assault on a deep mystery, says Joe Lykken, of the Fermi
National Accelerator Laboratory near Chicago: "This apparent triple
coincidence is certainly an important puzzle in modern cosmology, and if the MEW2/MPl
relation is true, it does indeed explain the coincidence in a deep way."
Lykken adds, however, that the rough derivations of Arkani-Hamed and his
colleagues are based on toy models. "The only way to prove their
conjecture is to discover and verify some big, new, beyond-the-standard-model
theory that has the desired properties." Arkani-Hamed agrees, but adds,
"These coincidences are puzzling, and it's time to take them
seriously--they may be giving us a clue towards such a theory."
componenti principali dell'
universo esistono in quantità simile. Una spiegazione coinvolge l'
energia che caratterizza la forza del
electroweak, osservata nell'
azione nella rappresentazione di questo
artista delle piste reali
della particella da uno scontro del
protone-anti-protone.
Per i cosmologists i cinesi anziani curse,
" maggio che vivete nei
periodi interessanti, " stanno
cominciando a sembrare tutto l' troppo
adatto.
Secondo l' ultima prova, una forza " antigravità "
mysterious -- la cosiddetta energia scura --
sembra essere un
componente importante dell' universo. La densità scura di energia si
pensa per rimanere costante a tempo, mentre
la materia continua " ad
essere diluita " mentre l' universo si
espande. Quel aumenti una
domanda:
altra? Quello è il riddle
una squadra di teorici ha affrontato nei 14
NovemberPRL e sostengono
scoprire che una spiegazione semplice
coinvolge soltanto i parametri
più fondamentali da fisica delle
particelle. La squadra, condotta
che da Nima Arkani-Hamed dell' università di
California a Berkeley,
relativa natura mysterious, i
cosmologists ritengono che capiscano in
generale come la densità di
tutta la materia si evolve mentre l'
universo si espande e si
raffredda.
tutti coincidono, appena
poichè le osservazioni suggeriscono. Il risultato è un assalto
GRASSETTO su un mistero profondo, ad esempio
Joe Lykken, del
laboratorio nazionale dell' acceleratore del
Fermi vicino a Chicago:
" questa coincidenza triplice apparente
è certamente un puzzle
importante in cosmology moderno e se il
rapporto di MEW2/MPl è
allineare, effettivamente spiega la
coincidenza in un modo profondo. "
Lykken aggiunge, tuttavia, che le
derivazioni approssimative di
Arkani-Hamed e dei suoi colleghe sono basate
sui modelli del
giocattolo.
" l' unico modo dimostrare la loro congettura deve
scoprire e verificare qualche grande, nuovo,
teoria del
oltre-$$$-standard-modello che ha le
proprietà volute. "
Arkani-Hamed è conforme, ma aggiunge, "
queste coincidenze stanno
imbarazzando ed è tempo di prenderle
seriamente -- possono darci un
indizio verso una tal teoria. "
The Most Accurate Defect Measurement

Fault
lines between pure crystals affect conductivity in superconductors and the
properties of semiconductors in computer chips, so researchers are keen to
measure them precisely. A new technique, reported in the 11 DecemberPRL,
uses an electron beam to measure so-called stacking faults to an accuracy of a
trillionth of a meter ( 1 pm), ten times better than previous techniques.
Taking advantage of the purity of a coherent electron beam, the authors
detected the interference of electrons transmitted through large regions of
pure crystal on each side of the defect. The technique may improve
understanding of crystal interfaces and their relationship with material
properties.
Conventional
electron microscopes use incoherent beams, usually created by heating a
filament, so the electron waves originating from different parts of the
filament are not synchronized. But coherent beams come from a sharp tungsten
tip from which the electrons are liberated by an electric field. The waves line
up more coherently from such a source, just as light streaming through a
pinhole in a screen is more coherent than that of a lightbulb. Coherent
electron microscopes have become commercially available in just the past five
years or so, but they are still quite expensive.
With
improvements in coherent electron sources has come a series of new, more
precise techniques for measuring material structures. The latest system,
developed by Yimei Zhu and his colleagues at Brookhaven National Laboratory in
Upton, NY, uses one of the best electron microscopes in the world, but the
machine acts more like a ruler than a camera in this case, since the
measurement does not involve creating an image.
To make
the measurement, Zhu and his colleagues first used conventional electron
microscopy to find a stacking fault in an otherwise high quality, thin crystal
of a high temperature superconductor (Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8).
They then lined up the fault with the center of their electron beam and focused
it at a point 160 µm in front of the sample, which created a "shadow
image" behind the crystal. That image included a large number of
diffraction spots, similar to those created in x-ray crystallography, except
that each spot consisted of a striped disk containing oscillating wave
interference patterns. The electron waves traveling through the left side of
the fault interfere with those traveling through the slightly offset crystal
structure on the right side, which leads to the interference patterns.
Thanks to
the coherent beam, the team was able to resolve interference patterns out to
the 31st disk from the center ("31st order reflection"). By comparing
the data with computer simulations, they determined that the space between
crystal planes at one of the faults was 0.319 nm shorter than the normal
spacing, to an accuracy of 0.001 nm --about 1/100 of the width of a small atom.
By comparison, the best electron microscopy can image stacking faults with a
resolution of about 0.16 nm, although it gives an image of the atoms as well.
Zhu points out that he has used both techniques on the same sample with the
same machine.
"It's
a very nice application," says John Cowley of Arizona State University
(ASU) in Tempe, but he cautions that the technique is somewhat specialized:
"You can't look at any old crystal with any old defect in it." But
Stephen Pennycook says the technique might be generalized to include other
defect types. The method should help researchers relate interface structures
with their effects on material properties, says John Spence of ASU. "A
very nice idea."

autori hanno rilevato l' interferenza degli
elettroni trasmessi con le
grandi regioni del cristallo puro da ogni
lato del difetto. La
tecnica può migliorare la comprensione delle
interfacce di cristallo
e del loro rapporto con le proprietà
materiali. I microscopi
elettronici convenzionali usano i fasci
incoerenti, creati solitamente
spillo in uno schermo è
più coerente di quella d'un lightbulb. I microscopi elettronici
coerenti sono diventato disponibili in
commercio durante appena i
abbastanza costosi. Con i
miglioramenti in elettrone coerente le

nuove, tecniche più precise per la misurazione
delle strutture
materiali.

diffrazione, simili a quelli
oscillanti dell' onda.
interferenza. Grazie al
fascio coerente, la squadra potevano
risolvere i modelli di
interferenza fuori al trentunesimo disco dal
centro (" trentunesima

Melting in a Superconductor

We would
see a lot more high temperature superconducting devices if the materials were
capable of carrying a large electric current. The maximum, or "critical
current" at zero resistance depends intimately on the properties of
so-called vortices, tiny eddies of current that swirl around in a
superconductor whenever a large current or magnetic field is present. Vortices
can form their own lattice, independent of the material's atomic structure.
Now, in the 22 January PRL, a team shows the first clear structural
evidence that the vortex lattice can literally melt or freeze, just like ice or
water. They also show that the phase transition is synchronized with a well
known spike up in the critical current--confirming once again that manipulation
of the vortex behavior will be a key to raising currents through
superconductors.
When
vortices are present, "a superconductor isn't a superconductor," says
Jeffrey Lynn of the National Institute of Standards and Technology in
Gaithersburg, MD. Moving vortices create resistance to a current flow, so zero
resistance only occurs when the material has enough flaws to "pin"
the vortex lattice in place--which isn't usually a problem with real crystals.
As a superconductor is warmed, its critical current drops, but researchers have
found that over a narrow range of temperatures, the critical current suddenly
increases and then decreases again. This "peak effect" is thought to
be caused by a "softening" of the warming vortex lattice--
with a Jell-O-like consistency, vortices can more easily find pinning sites
(defects) in
the atomic lattice, which briefly allows more supercurrent to flow.
In the
last few years, this lattice softening was shown to be a real melting
transition to a "vortex liquid" in high temperature superconductors.
But the techniques were somewhat indirect because there is no good way to
directly image the vortices at high temperatures in these materials. It was
also unclear how the melting was connected with the peak effect--if it was at
all--and whether such vortex melting is unique to high temperature
superconductors. After all, no one had seen a vortex lattice melt in low
temperature superconductors after more than 40 years of studying their
vortices.
Sean Ling
of Brown University in Providence, RI, Lynn, and their colleagues, hoped to
settle these questions by combining their skills in vortex imaging and magnetic
susceptibility measurements. (Susceptibility is closely related to the critical
current.)
They built a susceptometer capable of monitoring a sample while it was also
being hit with neutrons to determine the vortex structure.
Using a
crystal of niobium (a low-temperature superconductor), the team zeroed in on
the narrow region of the peak effect with their susceptometer and--with neutron
diffraction--directly observed the vortex melting, which occurred
simultaneously. They demonstrated what Ling calls "hallmarks" of the
phase transition: supercooling of the liquid and superheating of the solid.
Just as ultrapure water can remain liquid below its freezing point--until a
small ripple or impurity sparks crystallization--the team showed that the
supercooled vortices became solid only after being perturbed by an oscillating
magnetic field.
The paper
is "a milestone contribution to the field," says George Crabtree of
Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. "It is the first convincing
experiment showing two distinct configurational states that can be reproducibly
generated" and clearly suggests a phase transition. In fact, adds Lynn,
this phase transition is immune to some of the complications of more familiar
solids and liquids. "This could be a prototype system to study melting
phenomena in general," he says.
Bozhevolnyi
says that distance is plenty.
The team
made a lattice of smooth gold bumps 400 nm apart on a gold surface but left
bump-free channels through the lattice to serve as wave guides. They created
SPPs by aiming near infrared laser light at a standard light-to-SPP coupling
device on the surface and detected them using a scanning near-field optical
microscope (SNOM). The SNOM’s glass fiber tip picks up a small leakage of
electromagnetic waves as it’s scanned across the surface to build up an image.
The
images show that 782-nm-light-induced SPPs cannot penetrate into the periodic
structure, whereas at somewhat longer wavelengths, they do penetrate.
Bozhevolnyi calls this steep wavelength dependence "smoking gun
evidence" of the band gap effect. Other images show SPPs traveling along
waveguides, although not quite the way the team expected. "We did not know
that one should be careful with the width of the channel," Bozhevolnyi
admits, because theorists have not yet tackled this challenging problem.
But soon
they will, says Alexei Maradudin of the University of California at Irvine.
"It's a clever idea [that] I'm sure will stimulate theoretical work,"
he says, adding that the paper has got him thinking about doing some related
calculations. William Barnes of the University of Exeter in the U.K. and
Maradudin believe that SPP photonic structures may be important for devices in
the future, but Barnes is also interested in the basic physics. "The
interaction between surface plasmon modes and periodic structures is full of
unanswered questions," he says.

Faster than a Speeding Light Wave
19
May 2000
|
The
starship Enterprise routinely flies faster than light, but of course, nothing
really goes that fast. Well, almost nothing. Physicists have been concocting
light pulses that do travel faster than c (the speed of light in
a vacuum) for almost two decades, although none of the experiments could be
used to send information that fast, according to most physicists. The
latest demonstration, described in the 22 May PRL, may be the most
dramatic, as it dispenses with some of the complexities of most other
experiments: The light pulses travel through free space--not a highly absorbing
material--and their superluminal (faster than light) feat covers a distance of
30 wavelengths, much farther than in any previous work.
According
to relativity, a faster-than-light signal would allow an observer traveling in
some fast moving reference frame to see the signal arrive before it was
sent--in other words, she could predict the future. That would violate the
sacred causality principle, which says that "causes" always precede
"effects." Most physics students learn that for light waves in some
media, the "phase velocity"--the speed at which a sine wave
travels--can exceed c, since you can't send a signal with a constant
amplitude wave that extends forever into the future and the past. But teachers
often say that the "group velocity"--the speed of a wave pulse, like
a single traveling "wiggle" on a stretched rope--cannot be larger
than c because it represents the speed of a physical signal.
Researchers
have now measured many group velocities higher than c. "It's just
not true what they say in the textbooks," says Raymond Chiao of the
University of California at Berkeley. For example, a Gaussian shaped light
pulse can travel faster than c through some highly absorbing materials.
The explanation is that the central piece of the pulse is attenuated more than
the earliest piece. Although the pulse shape is unchanged, it comes out
smaller, and the "leading edge" of the input pulse is transformed to
become the peak of the emerging pulse, a process called "reshaping."
So no part of the pulse is actually transmitted faster than c, says
Chiao.
In the
new experiments, led by Anedio Ranfagni of the Italian National Research
Council in Firenze, the setup looks innocent enough: The team sent microwaves
(3.5 cm wavelength) through a narrow, ring-shaped opening onto a large and
nearby focusing mirror, which collimated the waves into a beam propagating back
from the mirror, beyond and behind the source. They "modulated" the
microwaves with rectangular pulses (sharp "amplify" and
"attenuate" commands, in rapid succession) and detected the pulses at
positions between 30 and 140 cm from the source, along the beam axis. The slope
of their plot of arrival times vs. distance led to an apparent propagation
speed of 5 to 7% above c, although beyond about 1 m, the speed
approached c, all of which agreed with previous predictions.
Aephraim
Steinberg of the University of Toronto explains that such a beam is unusual.
The light detected at each point along the beam has actually arrived via an
"off-axis detour" to some part of the large mirror, rather than
having traveled down the beam. So the light pulse detected at 60 cm simply took
less of a detour than the light detected at 30 cm from the source, says
Steinberg. "The wave at 60 cm was already en route along a sort of
'shortcut' while you were detecting the wave at 30 cm," he says. The
pulses are reshaped by the slit and mirror in this case, rather than by the special
properties of a medium through which the light propagates.
Ranfagni
doesn't accept Steinberg's interpretation and states in the paper that "a
shadow of a doubt" remains regarding the existence of superluminal
signals. Despite some shortcomings in the quality and quantity of data,
Steinberg believes the new results are correct and important because "it's
much harder to see where the loophole is" that saves causality. He says
that as physicists come up with ever more surprising examples of faster-than-light
propagation, they hope to approach a "universal understanding" of
light propagation in all circumstances.

L' impresa di starship vola ordinariamente
più velocemente della

quello velocemente. Bene,
quasi niente.
esperimenti potrebbero
essere usati per trasmettere le informazioni
che digiunano, secondo la
maggior parte dei fisici. L' ultima dimostrazione, descritta nel 22
maggio PRL, può essere il più drammatico,
poichè eroga con alcune
delle complessità della maggior parte degli
altri esperimenti:
**time-out** light impulso viaggi attraverso
libero spazio -- non un
alto assorb materiale -- e loro superluminal
(velocemente che luce)
abilità copr un distanza 30 lunghezza
d'onda, molto lontano che
qualsiasi previous lavoro. Secondo la relatività, un segnale della
veloce-che-luce permetterebbe un osservatore
che viaggia in un certo
telaio commovente veloce di riferimento per
vedere il segnale arrivare
prima che fosse trasmesso -- cioè potrebbe
predire il futuro. Quello
violerebbe il principio sacred di causalità,
che dice che " le cause
" precedono sempre " gli effetti.
" **time-out** maggior parte
fisica
allievo impar che per chiaro onda alcun
media, " fase velocità " --
velocità cui un seno onda viaggi -- pot
ecced c, poiché voi pot non
trasmett un segnale con un costante ampiezza

sempre futuro e esperienza. Ma gli insegnanti dicono spesso che "
la
velocità del gruppo " -- la velocità
d'un impulso dell' onda, come
un singolo " wiggle " mobile su
una corda allungata -- non può essere
più grande della c perché rappresenta la
velocità d'un segnale
fisico.
alcuni materiali
altamente assorbenti.
esempio Chiao. Nei nuovi
esperimenti, condotti da Anedio Ranfagni del
Consiglio di ricerca
nazionale italiano in Firenze, la messa a
punto sembra abbastanza non
colpevole:
apertura a sezione
propaga indietro dallo
specchio, oltre e dietro la sorgente. " hanno modulato " le microonde
con gli impulsi rettangolari (sharp "
amplifica " e " attenuare " i
comandi, nella successione veloce) ed hanno
rilevato gli impulsi alle
posizioni fra 30 e 140 centimetri dalla
sorgente, lungo l' asse del
fascio.
velocità avvicinata a c,
" l' onda a 60 centimetri era già in
viaggio lungo un ordinamento ' della
scorciatoia ' mentre stavate
rilevando l' onda a 30 centimetri, "
superluminal. Malgrado alcune
imperfezioni nella qualità e nella quantità
di dati, Steinberg crede

Counting the Ripples in a Light Wave
|
Measuring
the frequency of your heartbeat is pretty simple--just count the beats in a
given period of time. Even a radio frequency signal at 100 MHz can be measured
by an electronic counter in much the same way. But a 600 THz (6 × 1014
Hz) light wave oscillates far too fast to count, so precision measurements of
optical frequencies have traditionally used huge and cumbersome setups,
available only to a handful of labs worldwide. In the 29 MayPRL a
collaboration of physicists reports they have drastically simplified the
process to the point that almost any physics lab could measure optical
frequencies nearly as precisely as the standards institutes do. The new
technique will lead to new tests of a host of fundamental physics principles
Measuring
things to 12 decimal places is not just boring detail work, maintains John Hall
of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University
of Colorado in Boulder. As measurements of the light associated with atomic
transitions have become more accurate over the past century, researchers have
learned more about the quantum
world
and the physics of atoms. "It's like one of those Russian dolls--you just
never come to the last one," says Hall.
In 1983
Hall and his colleagues publisehd the most precise optical frequency
measurement at the time, but it took eight physicists and perhaps 20 lasers.
Starting from the 9 GHz signal of a cesium atomic clock, which defines the unit
of frequency (Hertz), they needed to double and triple the frequencies of
various oscillators in a "chain," to directly connect with the
frequency of light to be measured. Carefully comparing each frequency in the
chain with the next one allows the equivalent of counting the number of cycles
in a light wave each second.
Hall, Ted
Hänsch of the Max Planck Institute in Garching, Germany, and their colleagues,
have now bridged that gap in one step. The system uses a laser that generates
ultrashort light pulses--12 fs, or 1.2 × 10-14 s in width--at a rate
near 100 MHz, which is synchronized with an atomic clock. The spectrum (Fourier
transform) of this light is a "comb" of ultranarrow lines spaced
every 100 MHz in frequency, over a limited range of light frequencies. The team
sends this light through a new type of optical fiber that spreads the reddish
pulses over most of the visible range, creating a comb with millions of lines
whose spacing is precisely determined by the cesium clock. As compared to, say,
tripling a laser frequency to get the third harmonic--about as far as one could
go directly in the past--the comb allows access to the four millionth harmonic.
"That's four million stable lasers," says Hall.
Ideally,
the frequency of any laser beam could then be determined by using standard
techniques to find the distance in frequency between the laser line and one of
the comb lines. The only problem is that, while the comb spacing is
precisely known (about 100 MHz), its absolute position is not defined. So the
team used the fundamental and second harmonic lines of a neodymium:YAG laser
(frequencies exactly a factor of two apart) to get the extra information needed
to nail down any optical frequency. In the process, they made the most accurate
measurement ever of the YAG frequency, at the level of 10-11. They
also measured two standard laser lines to similar accuracy as proof that the
system gives results equal to or better than those of the international
standards agencies. Later refinements, published recently in Science, have
allowed the team to eliminate the YAG laser from the setup.
Hall
foresees a commercial instrument being marketed within five years that will
allow any physicist to measure an optical frequency down to the kHz level as
easily as they now measure radio frequencies. The technology has already
spawned experiments that push theories of fundamental atomic physics to new
limits. Leo Hollberg, also of NIST, but not directly involved in the work, says
the new technique is "a revolution in frequency measurement" that
will likely lead to new super-accurate clocks based on optical frequencies,
rather than the microwaves of today's atomic clocks. Hall expects many
unpredictable applications for a device that provides four million stable laser
lines at once.
and muons
provide one of the few probes up to the task. A muon is a heavier,
shorter-lived sibling of the electron, and by virtue of its spin, the muon is
sensitive to magnetic fields. In the technique called muon spin rotation (µSR)
energetic muons plow into a sample and get stuck inside, like BBs shot into a
loaf of bread. When muons expire--after 2 microseconds on average--they beget
electrons, and by carefully observing these electrons, researchers obtain
precise pictures of the magnetic field at the site where the muons took their
last breaths.
The typical
limitation to the muon spin rotation technique arises from the muons' high
speed. "Conventional muons, with energies of about 4 MeV, will pass
straight through many samples of interest," says Ted Forgan, of the
University of Birmingham in England, a co-author of the new paper. At this
energy, traveling at one-fifth the speed of light, muons embed themselves
relatively deep inside a target. Elvezio Morenzoni and his colleagues at the
Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland refined the latest µSR technique, in
which they slow the muons to just 15 eV in energy by sending them through a
dense gas. By varying a voltage that accelerates the muons, the team can
control the precise depth to which the particles penetrate a sample.
A
superconductor provided the ideal first task for the technique. A cold
superconductor normally expels magnetic fields from its interior, but the field
infiltrates the edges of the superconductor to a depth of hundreds of
nanometers. Since the mid-1930s, physicists have assumed that the internal
magnetic field strength decreases exponentially with increasing depth, but no
one had devised a way to directly measure the field strength so close to the
surface. In the new experiments, Forgan, Morenzoni, and their colleagues used
muons at six different energies between 3 and 30 keV to probe a HTSC to a depth
of up to 152 nm. The results show a precisely exponential decrease of the
penetrating magnetic field, confirming the decades-old assumption, and showing
that HTSCs follow the same behavior as traditional superconductors.
Jeff
Sonier, of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, sees significant
implications for the added capabilities of µSR. The research community now has
"a sensitive magnetic probe which can be used to study both the surface
and bulk of the same sample," he says. That will allow more precise tests
of theories of superconductivity and other magnetic phenomena.

Apply Quantum Principle with Caution

In the
early 20th century physicists realized that classical physics fails to explain
atoms, even though it works well for baseballs and planets. Part of the early
atomic theory relied on Niels Bohr's correspondence principle, which states
that the quantum theory must agree with the classical theory in situations
where the classical theory is accurate. For atoms, the classical limit has
always meant highly excited energy states, in which the energy spacing between
quantum states is so small as to resemble the continuum of states predicted by
Newtonian physics. While this idea works well for some special cases like the
hydrogen atom, a paper in the 22 November PRL shows that high-energy
states are not necessarily classical, so Bohr's commonly-used formulation of
the principle is not correct in general.
Bohr's
original 1913 model of the hydrogen atom was based in part on his
correspondence principle: When the electron is far from the proton--say, a
meter away--it should act like a classical charge, emitting light with the same
frequency that it orbits the proton. It worked famously for Bohr, and the
principle was formalized and extended over the years. Today textbooks state
that classical and quantum theories must agree for large quantum numbers, and
many researchers expect all atomic calculations at large quantum numbers to
agree with Bohr-like "semiclassical" predictions.
Bo Gao of
the University of Toledo in Ohio was studying the rotational-vibrational states
of diatomic molecules close to breaking apart and was surprised that the
semiclassical predictions became less accurate at higher quantum
numbers. The problem, Gao eventually realized, is that a state with a large
quantum number is not necessarily "more classical"--the correct
classical limit is a state where the quantum mechanical wave associated with
the particles has a short wavelength.
Ultracold
atoms can have extremely long wavelengths, so even if a pair of them attract
one another at a great distance--equivalent to a molecule in a highly excited
vibrational state--the semiclassical theory might still not apply. Neutral
atoms do not attract one another as strongly as oppositely charged particles,
which follow the Coulomb inverse-square law. Gao found that most commonly
studied atomic force laws--such as the van der Waals interaction--fail to
follow Bohr's version of the correspondence principle.
"We
did not have a good quantum theory for those very highly excited states of
molecules," says Gao, so most researchers use complex computer codes to
calculate their properties. He explains that without a more direct theory, the
semiclassical approach has remained popular "because it's a very simple
result." Gao maintains that both physics teachers and researchers need to
clarify their understanding of the correspondence principle.
"Fortunately,
Bohr picked the Coulomb potential for his first study," notes Chris Greene
of the University of Colorado at Boulder, because it's one of the few cases
where Bohr's formulation of the correspondence principle works. He says that
others studying cold atoms in the past several years have noticed the problem
in different guises. As physicists learn more, Greene adds, "the more
remarkable it seems that the line of research Bohr initiated led ultimately to
the correct quantum mechanical theory."
finding
is an example of the enigmatic behavior researchers will have to understand as
they try to develop quantum computers.
If Alice
wants to tell Bob which direction to look for her, she can align the spin of an
electron in that direction and count on Bob's spin analyzer to decode the
information. The uncertainty principle always limits Bob's accuracy, but his
guess at the direction will be closer if Alice sends a second identically
prepared electron. In 1995 Serge Massar of the University of Brussels and Sandu
Popescu of the University of Cambridge and Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Bristol,
United Kingdom, showed that Bob's accuracy is
maximized if he measures the spins in a way that quantum mechanically
"entangles" them--so that they no longer have separate identities--rather
than measuring them individually. Now Popescu and Nicolas Gisin of the
University of Geneva in Switzerland show that the direction Bob determines
would be even more accurate if the pair of spins were antiparallel, rather than
parallel.
Popescu
explains that the effect is purely quantum mechanical and defies classical
intuition. If Alice used a single spin aligned antiparallel to the direction
she wanted to communicate, Bob could simply turn his spin analyzer upside down,
or just switch the labels on the "spin up" and "spin down"
indicator lights. So with one spin, parallel and antiparallel spins provide the
same information. But if Alice sends a pair of spins, and Bob uses the optimal
measurement technique, the spins must become entangled and measured as a single
entity. There is no separate part of Bob's analyzer devoted to each spin
individually, no way for him to reverse the output for one spin and not for the
other. Popescu and Gisin show that the "fidelity" of Bob's
measurement is 0.75 for parallel spins and about 0.79 for antiparallel spins,
which means that the antiparallel pair contains a bit more information.
Researchers
have only recently begun to scrutinize the information content of quantum
states, says Popescu, and as they do, "we run into all kinds of
paradoxical behaviors like this." By investigating them he and his
colleagues hope to better understand quantum information and provide insights
to those developing quantum computation, encryption, and other applications.
"It's
remarkable how many new insights into quantum mechanics one gets" by
applying information theory to the quantum world, says William Wootters of
Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He adds that the field has
developed mainly in the past few years, even though some of the results, such
as those of Gisin and Popescu, could have been discovered many decades ago if
anyone had asked the right questions.

casi speciali come l'
atomo dell' idrogeno, una carta del 22 nelle
esposizioni novembre PRL
necessariamente classiche,
in modo da la formulazione comunemente usata
di Bohr del principio non
è corrette in generale. Il modello 1913 di originale di Bohr dell'
atomo dell' idrogeno è stato basato in parte
per suo principio della
corrispondenza: Quando l' elettrone è lontano dal protone -- dire,
un tester assente -- esso dovrebbe
comportarsi come una carica
classica, emettente luce con la stessa
frequenza che orbita intorno al
protone.
anni. Oggi i manuali
semiclassical ". Bo Gao dell'
università di Toledo nell' Ohio stava
studiando le condizioni di
rotazione-vibratorie delle molecole diatomic
vicino a rompersi a parte
ed è stato sorprendo che le previsioni
semiclassical sono diventato
meno esatte agli più alti numeri di
quantum.
d'onda corta. Gli atomi
di Ultracold possono avere lunghezze d'onda
estremamente lunghe, in
semiclassical potrebbe
coulomb. Gao ha trovato che le leggi
atomiche il più comunemente studiate della
forza -- quale l'
interazione di Waals del der del furgone --
non riescono a seguire la
versione di Bohr del principio della
corrispondenza.
corrispondenza. " fortunatamente, Bohr ha selezionato il potenziale
di coulomb per il suo primo studio, "
nota Chris Greene dell'
università di Colorado a Boulder, perché è
uno dei pochi casi dove
la formulazione di Bohr del principio della
corrispondenza funziona.
differenti. Poichè i fisici
imparano più, Greene aggiunge, " più

Quantum
computers promise to perform calculations much faster than silicon-based
computers by manipulating the strange rules of quantum mechanics. Since an atom
can inhabit many quantum states at once, it can perform many operations
simultaneously. But the best ways of storing and transmitting data are
sometimes surprising in the quantum realm. In the 12 JulyPRL a team
shows that storing a direction in space with two oppositely directed
(antiparallel) spins is more efficient than using two parallel spins, even
though in the classical world there is no difference. The finding is an example

rotazioni in modo opposto

impigliate e misurate come singola
entità. Non ci è parte separata
dell' analizzatore del Bob dedicata
individualmente ad ogni rotazione,
a nessun modo affinchè lui inverta l' uscita
informazioni. I ricercatori

Atoms in 3D
|
What do The
Creature From the Black Lagoon and atomic microscopy have in common? More
than you might think, according to a paper in the 5 March PRL. A
Japanese physicist proposes a method for creating three-dimensional images of
atoms by applying the same stereoscopic techniques used to make 3D pulp-fiction
movies. Unlike other methods that require complex calculations, the process is
simple, fast, and might even someday allow for real-time 3D video of atoms and
molecules.
Since the
early 20th century, researchers have learned about atomic arrangements using
diffraction--the scattering of x rays and electrons from crystals. But the
traditional methods can be tedious and require many trial-and-error
calculations. Within the past 15 years, physicists have developed several more
direct techniques. One scheme, called photoelectron diffraction, uses high
energy photons to knock electrons loose inside the sample. These electrons then
pass through the sample and generate a diffraction pattern. Some researchers
believe that the peaks in the diffraction pattern can be related directly to
the distance between the emitter and scattering atoms. This means that the
structure of the crystal can be obtained directly from diffraction data,
without more complex analysis.
For
several years, Hiroshi Daimon of the Nara Institute of Science and Technology
in Japan has studied an unusual feature of photoelectron diffraction. He has
bombarded his samples with circularly polarized light, which contains photons
with spin angular momentum. This angular momentum is transferred to the
electrons and changes their trajectories, creating a diffraction pattern that
is rotated slightly--either clockwise or counter-clockwise, depending on the
light's direction of rotation.
Inspired
by 3D stereograms in magazines, Daimon came up with a use for this phenomenon.
Stereograms require a pair of colored glasses to separate blue and red images
and create a three-dimensional illusion. It turns out that the equations for
stereoscopic images are similar to those for circularly polarized photoelectron
diffraction. Just as the blue and red images each illustrate a scene from a
slightly different point-of-view, the two diffraction patterns represent
slightly different views of a crystal. Daimon demonstrated the technique by
making a stereoscopic pair of images of the atoms inside a tungsten crystal.
But Brian Tonner of the University of Central Florida
in Orlando is uncertain whether such a technique could truly work. "The
notion that a diffraction pattern like this can be interpreted in terms of real
space and time positions is still under scientific debate," he says.
Still, Tonner concedes, it is not implausible that this technique could work
and, because it is so simple, could even permit real time imaging of molecules,
a prospect that he describes as "very exciting."
Atomi in 3d

Dall'
inizio del 20esimo secolo, i ricercatori
hanno imparato circa le
disposizioni atomiche usando la diffrazione --
la dispersione dei
raggi e degli elettroni di x dai
cristalli. Ma i metodi tradizionali
possono essere noiosi e richiedere molte
calcolazioni di
prova-e-errore. Nei 15 anni scorsi, i fisici hanno sviluppato
parecchie tecniche più dirette. Uno schema, chiamato la diffrazione
del fotoelettrone, usa gli alti fotoni di
energia per battere gli
elettroni allentati all'interno del
campione. Questi elettroni allora
attraversano il campione e generano un
modello di diffrazione. Alcuni
bombardato i suoi campioni con luce
circolarmente polarizzata, che
contiene i fotoni con quantità di moto
angolare di rotazione. Questa
quantità di moto angolare è trasferita agli
elettroni e cambia la
loro traiettoria, creante un modello di
diffrazione che è ruotato un
po' -- in senso orario o in senso
antiorario, secondo il senso della
luce di rotazione. Ispirato dagli stereograms del 3d in scomparti,
Daimon ha fornito un uso per questo
fenomeno. Gli stereograms
richiedono un accoppiamento dei vetri
colorati separare le immagini
blu e rosse e creare un' illusione
tridimensionale. Risulta che le
equazioni per le immagini stereoscopiche
sono simili a quelle per la
diffrazione circolarmente polarizzata del
fotoelettrone. Appena come
le immagini che blu e rosse ciascuno
illustra una scena da una
punto-de-vista un po' differente, i due
modelli di diffrazione
rappresentare le viste un po' differenti
d'un cristallo. Daimon ha
dimostrato la tecnica facendo un
accoppiamento stereoscopico delle
immagini degli atomi all'interno d'un
cristallo del tungsteno. Ma
Brian Tonner dell' università di Florida
centrale a Orlando è
incerto se una tal tecnica potrebbe
allineare funzionare. " la
nozione che un modello di diffrazione come
questo può essere
interpretato in termini di spazio reale e
posizioni di tempo è ancora
sotto il dibattito scientifico, "
dice. Eppure, Tonner concede, non
è incoerente che questa tecnica potrebbe
funzionare e, perché è
così semplice, potrebbe persino consentire
la formazione immagine in
tempo reale delle molecole, un prospetto che
descrive come " molto
emozionante. "

child, it helps to have a good meter stick. But on the atomic scale, accurate
measurements are harder to come by. In the 17 JulyPRL, a team reports a
potential new standard of length for short distances based on radiation from the
excited nuclei of iron atoms. Further improvements may make this standard an
important tool for probing the structure of matter, where physicists must gauge
the separations between nuclei with an accuracy of millionths of an angstrom.
The
meter, once defined as the gap between two etchings on a metal bar in Paris, is
now set as the distance that light from a helium-neon laser travels in
1/299,792,458 second. However, the wavelength of that laser light--about 6330
Å--is too large to use as a reference for measurements of atomic dimensions.
Instead, researchers use the regular spacing between atoms in a silicon
crystal, known as the lattice constant. This measurement is the most accurate
length standard at x-ray wavelengths now in use: 5.43102088 Å, known to within
0.029 parts per million. But the silicon lattice constant requires ultrapure
crystals and keen controls on temperature and pressure, making it difficult for
most labs to reproduce.
Fortunately,
Nature provides a simpler solution: the Mössbauer effect. Atomic nuclei in a
crystal or foil can absorb and emit photons (Mössbauer radiation) with
extremely well-defined energies. Bright pulses of x rays from a synchrotron
beam can stimulate the effect when the x-ray wavelength matches the Mössbauer
wavelength.
In the
new work, Yuri Shvyd'ko of the University of Hamburg and his colleagues used
iron-57, whose nuclei emit Mössbauer radiation with a wavelength of 0.86
angstroms. "That wavelength is so easy to reproduce with uniquely high
accuracy," says Shvyd'ko, since it requires no special lab conditions.
However, measuring the wavelength accurately calls for intense x-rays. Shvyd'ko
and his team used x-ray beams at the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) in
Hamburg and the Advanced Photon Source at the Argonne National Laboratory in
Illinois.
To gauge
the Mössbauer wavelength accurately, the team first calibrated their
"wavelength selector"--an arrangement of crystals that picks out a
specific wavelength from the x-ray beam by rotating on a finely controlled pivot.
They aimed the output of the selector at a silicon crystal and used the
relationship between the silicon lattice constant and the (Bragg) scattering
angles to determine three reference wavelengths with high precision. With the
selector calibrated, they simply found the wavelength that excited Mössbauer
radiation in a foil of iron-57. The result was 0.86025474 Å, accurate to within
0.19 parts per million. "This is elegant and incredibly skilled
work," says Eric Isaacs of Lucent Technologies in Murray Hill, New Jersey.
"It's metrology at its best." A team in Japan led by Zhang Xiaowei of
the High-Energy Accelerator Research Corporation in Tsukuba recently published
a slightly different value for the iron-57 Mössbauer wavelength using another technique.
Coauthor
Wolfgang Sturhahn of Argonne hopes the team can improve the data by at least a
factor of 10 with an even tighter beam of x rays. If that occurs, the Mössbauer
iron-57 line may surpass the silicon lattice constant as the flagship standard
at x-ray and gamma-ray wavelengths. It might then be used as a reference in
measurements of fundamental physical constants. Sturhahn also foresees
higher-resolution maps of crystal structures. In the case of biological
proteins, such maps could illuminate their functions by showing in greater
detail how proteins interact with other molecules on the subatomic level.

più dure da ottenere. Nei 17 JulyPRL, una squadra segnala un nuovo

distanze corte basate su

miglioramenti possono rendere a questo
standard uno strumento
importante per il sondaggio della struttura

regolato come la distanza che si illuminano

di quella luce di laser -- circa 6330 Å -- è
troppo grande per usare
come riferimento per le misure delle
dimensioni atomiche. Invece, i
ricercatori usano il gioco normale fra gli
atomi in un cristallo del
silicone, conosciuto come il costante della
grata.

semplice:
l' effetto di Mössbauer. I
nuclei atomici in un cristallo
o in una stagnola possono assorbire ed
emettere i fotoni (radiazione
di Mössbauer) con le energie estremamente
ben definite.
laboratorio. Tuttavia, misurando la
lunghezza d'onda richiede esattamente i
raggi X intensi.

determinare tre lunghezze

precisione. Con il selettore
calibrato, hanno trovato semplicemente la
lunghezza d'onda che ha
eccitato la radiazione di Mössbauer in una

risultato era 0,86025474 Å, esatti

One Less Bottleneck for Fusion
|
You don't
need temperatures as hot as the Sun for nuclear fusion. Rather than squeezing
nuclei together with high temperature and pressure, the muon catalyzed fusion
(µCF) approach lets a muon do the squeezing--by forcing a pair of nuclei into
close quarters as the muon orbits at a short distance. Some researchers hope to
make it practical for power generation in the future, although they have also
been interested in the muonic molecule itself. A collaboration reporting in the
21 AugustPRL has now directly observed a dramatic enhancement in the
formation of the muonic molecule, an essential process considered a
"bottleneck" for µCF, using a new approach: They created a beam of
muonic tritium atoms to get a clean, isolated measurement of the exotic molecule
created just before fusion.
The goal
in nuclear fusion is to force a deuteron (d = proton + neutron) and a
triton (t = proton + 2 neutrons) into such close proximity that the
strong nuclear attraction between the two pulls them together, overriding their
electrical repulsion. In µCF, the muon does this by first replacing the
electron orbiting a triton, to make muonic tritium, or µt. The µt
then corrals one of the d nuclei of a D2 molecule ( 2 d's
+ 2 electrons) to form dµt, without separating from the other, more
distant d nucleus and two electrons. The dµt is so tightly bound
that it acts like a single nucleus in this unusual, 3-nucleus, "compound
molecule" that is the critical intermediate before fusion occurs.
A single
muon zipping through a medium enriched with deuterium and tritium can catalyze
perhaps 150 fusions, but ten times that number would be needed for a reactor to
"break even" in energy. One of the bottlenecks that limit the µCF
process is the formation of the dµt because the molecule has trouble
getting rid of the kinetic energy of the µt. Experiments beginning in
the 1980s suggested that if theµt comes in with enough energy, the dµt
can form in an excited state and deliver the extra energy to specific rotations
and vibrations of the 3-nucleus molecular complex. Theories predicted that this
"resonant enhancement" would be optimized with a µt having 1
eV of energy, but the only way to control its energy was indirect--by heating
the medium, which could only achieve the equivalent of 0.05 eV.
Now an
international collaboration led by Glen Marshall of TRIUMF in Vancouver,
Canada, has dramatically demonstrated the resonant formation of the dµt
at ten times the rate of previous experiments by creating a µt beam. The
TRIUMF lab's muon beam was aimed at an "upstream" target of
tritium-enriched hydrogen followed by a "moderation" layer to slow
down the µt's produced in the first layer. The µt's then flew
through an 18-mm gap--which the team used to clock their speed--before hitting
the final, "downstream" target of deuterium (D2) cooled to
3 K. Since the tritium is radioactive, team member Makoto Fujiwara, now of the
University of Tokyo, calls the experiment "cold fusion with hot
atoms."
The
researchers cleanly measured the number of fusions (which produce detectable
alpha particles) at each µt energy. Their data confirm the predictions
of a dµt enhancement near 1 eV and also probe the energy structure of
three vibrational states of the compound molecule, because the likelihood of
fusion depends on the µt energy matching the vibrational energies.
James
Cohen of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico says the new data
strongly suggest that the first bottleneck in µCF can be eliminated, and only
one other remains--the tendency of the muon to "stick" to the
outgoing alpha particle after fusion--although "that one would seem to be
less amenable to control," he says. Still, Cohen is most interested in the
basic physics of forming the compound molecule, whether or not µCF leads to a
practical device. He's also very impressed with the experiment itself.
"Theorists think something can't be done experimentally, and clever
experimentalists are able to do it anyway," he says, noting that a decade
ago "I'd have said I couldn't imagine any way of doing it."
creata appena prima fusione.
L' obiettivo nella fusione nucleare è di
forzare un deuteron (d =
protone + neutrone) e un tritone (t =
protone + 2 neutroni) in tali
prossimità di fine che l' attrazione
nucleare forte fra i due le tira
insieme, escludendo la loro repulsione
elettrica.
condizione eccitata e trasportare l' energia
supplementare alle
rotazioni ed alle vibrazioni specifiche del
complesso molecolare
3-nucleus.
raffreddato a 3 K. Since il tritio è
radioattivo, membro Makoto
Fujiwara della squadra, ora dell' università
di Tokyo, chiamate l'
esperimento " fusione fredda con gli
atomi caldi. " I ricercatori in
energie vibratorie. James
Cohen del laboratorio nazionale del Los
Alamos nel New Mexico dice che
i nuovi dati suggeriscono fortemente che il
primo grave ostacolo in
meno favorevole a controllo, "
dice.
Entangled Atomic Beams
|
According
to quantum mechanics, a pair of specially prepared particles can be far apart but
retain a bizarre "entangled" relationship, where measurement of one
has an immediate impact on the state of the other. Most experiments with
entanglement have used isolated pairs of photons or two continuous light waves
consisting of many entangled photon pairs. In the 6 NovemberPRL, two
teams independently propose a simple way of creating two entangled beams of
atoms, using a Bose-Einstein condensate--a cloud of atoms cooled to its quantum
mechanical ground state. These entangled beams would allow new tests of the
weirdest ideas in quantum mechanics and new avenues of research into the
fundamental concepts of quantum information, the basis for quantum computing
and quantum cryptography. Another more distant application may be atomic clocks
that beat conventional limits of precision.
Researchers
can create a pair of photons in which one is horizontally polarized and the
other vertically polarized, but the polarization of each one remains
unknown--and according to quantum mechanics, undefined--until one is measured.
If entangled photon pairs are produced at a high enough rate, the individual
particles merge into continuous light beams which have been used to test the
so-called Bell inequalities, the fundamental equations describing entanglement.
Researchers have also used them to look at entanglement-related effects such as
quantum state teleportation. Atoms are thought to be better suited to such
applications than photons because almost every atom can be detected, and
because they should be less prone to "disentangling" in response to
outside disturbances. Although a few labs have generated pairs of entangled
atoms--one spin up, the other spin down--none have produced entangled atomic
beams, which could maximize the advantages of atoms over photons.
The two
teams--one based at the University of Arizona in Tucson and one at the
University of Innsbruck, Austria--propose essentially the same recipe. Imagine
atoms that have three spin states: 0, +1, and -1. Start with a Bose-Einstein
condensate of atoms entirely in the spin 0 state, and raise its energy (with
microwaves) above that of the +1 and -1 states. The condensate will no longer
be in the ground state, and atoms will tend to drop to the lowest energy states
via spin-conserving collisions. Pairs of spin 0 atoms will collide and generate
pairs of entangled spin +1 and -1 atoms, and these will increase their kinetic
energy (speed) to compensate for their loss of "spin energy." After
each of these collisions, the two fast moving entangled atoms will then head straight
out of the atom trap in opposite directions.
Han Pu of
Arizona says that for a cigar shaped condensate, most of the entangled pairs
will emerge as two beams along the cigar axis, and additional traps at each end
could capture a large number of escaping atoms.

Le due squadre -- una basata all' università

Left-Handed Nuclei
Many
molecular structures have two forms that are mirror images of one another,
often called left- and right-handed forms. Now a collaboration reports in the
5 February PRL that potato-shaped atomic nuclei can also have a
"handedness" when they spin about an asymmetric axis. The shape of
these nuclei has been uncertain, and the results simultaneously demonstrate
that nuclei can be rigidly "triaxial"--ellipsoidally shaped, with
axes of different lengths in all three dimensions. Since symmetries are
fundamentally related to basic interactions, experts are excited about
evidence that nuclei are less symmetric than previously thought and expect it
to lead to a deeper understanding of nuclear structure. Physicists
have always looked for symmetries--and broken symmetries--because they can
lead to fundamental principles. For example, the fact that any experiment
will come out the same way today as it will tomorrow ("time translation
symmetry"), leads to the classical conservation of energy. Once, nuclei
were assumed to be spheres, the ultimate symmetric shape, until research
showed they could be extremely elongated like cigars. In the 1960s theorists
first speculated that nuclei could be triaxial in shape--and therefore even
less symmetrical--but there was no direct way to observe it. Theoretical
work by Stefan Frauendorf of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and the
Rossendorf Research Center in Dresden, Germany, and his colleagues [1, 2] showed that
triaxial nuclei with odd numbers of both protons and neutrons
("odd-odd" triaxial nuclei) could have handedness. According to
their results, observing the so-called chirality would provide solid evidence
for stable triaxial shapes, while also establishing handedness as a new
property of nuclei. Nucleons
like to pair up and form a shell structure, just as electrons do in atoms. In
some odd-odd nuclei, the unpaired proton and neutron can orbit independently,
above the remaining "core" nucleons, which spin as a single unit.
If the proton and neutron in a football-shaped nucleus orbit around the same
axis on which the core spins, the nucleus is highly symmetric, like a
vertically oriented top. But for triaxial nuclei with the right numbers of
protons and neutrons, the two independent nucleons can orbit about the
shortest and longest axes, while the core spins about the third,
intermediate-length axis. In this case, the three sources of rotation can be
oriented in two different ways with respect to one another--left-handed and
right-handed--and the total spin is askew to the three principal axes. Krzysztof
Starosta of the State University of New York at Stony Brook and other
experimentalists have now collaborated with Frauendorf and found evidence for
handedness in odd-odd nuclei. They aimed beams of heavy ions at targets of
selected elements to produce nuclei with 75 neutrons and 55, 57, 59, and 61
protons (cesium, lanthanum, praseodymium, and promethium) in a wide variety
of spin states. In experiments at Stony Brook and Yale University, the team
detected the energies and directions of gamma rays emitted by the nuclei and
found the energies of each spin state. "Our experimental techniques were
not revolutionary," admits Starosta, but no one had attempted the tests
previously, in part because of the complexities of untangling the data for
odd-odd nuclei. The
team found a long series of "doublets"--pairs of closely spaced
energy states with the same amounts of angular momentum that corresponded to
otherwise identical nuclei. The simplest explanation, the team concluded, was
that the pairs of states arose from the two different types of handedness. "The
question of whether stable triaxial nuclear shapes exist has been debated for
decades," says Mark Riley of Florida State University in Tallahassee.
Starosta and his colleagues have "hit upon the first direct
evidence," which Riley says is causing quite a stir in the nuclear
physics world.

asimmetrico.

Newton's Still Correct
You
might think that Newton's law of gravity is about as solid as any principle
in physics. But if some of the latest grand unification theories are correct,
gravity may not operate exactly the way we expect. The 19 February PRL
reports experiments that test Newton's inverse-square law down to 200 µm,
with at least ten times the sensitivity of previous tests. Newtonian gravity
remains in tact so far, which eliminates some theories proposing extra
spatial dimensions, beyond the three we know. But extra dimensions may still
exist, "curled up" to smaller sizes. While
string theories promise to unify the four known types of forces in one
framework, they also require at least six extra spatial dimensions. These
dimensions are said to be curled up in a way that makes them normally
invisible--like the width of a distant telephone pole on the horizon, you
can't see them until you come in close. Extra dimensions might solve other
problems as well, says Jens Gundlach of the University of Washington in
Seattle, such as the surprising feebleness of gravity compared with
electromagnetism and the nuclear forces. According to this view, gravity's
effects spread into other dimensions, whereas the other forces are limited to
our three-dimensional world. "Gravity is so weak because it's
diluted," he says. Theorists
predicted that some of the extra dimensions might extend as far as a
millimeter or so, making them accessible to tabletop experiments: With two
"large" extra dimensions, the 1/r2 law of gravity would
look more like 1/r4 at close range. Now a University of Washington
team led by Eric Adelberger and Blayne Heckel, and including Gundlach,
reports the first and most sensitive of a new generation of precision, short
range gravity tests searching for extra dimensions. Inside
a high vacuum chamber, the team suspended a small metal ring from a torsion
(twisting) pendulum and placed a slowly rotating disk below it. The ring and
disk were perforated by ten holes each, and gravity tended to align the holes
ten times per revolution. A second disk rotating just below the first one
also had ten holes, but at positions designed to partially cancel the
attraction of the upper disk to the ring. A mirror affixed to the pendulum
reflected a laser beam and allowed Adelberger and his colleagues to detect
slight rotations of the ring. Gundlach explains that the experiment was
difficult partly because electrostatic fields--static electricity--could
easily overwhelm the tenuous gravitational force. The team carefully
stretched a 20-micrometer-thick sheet of metal between the ring and disks to
shield from such effects. The
researchers recorded the rotation of the ring suspended at heights between
200 µm and 5 mm. At 2 mm--the height where cancellation was maximized--they
saw the complete cessation of motion expected from Newtonian gravity, and
their data at other heights were also completely consistent with the
textbooks. The
team came up with a "brilliant design" and carried out a
"beautiful experiment," says Aharon Kapitulnik of Stanford University
in Palo Alto, CA. One important aspect, he explains, is that they measured a
complete cancellation of the gravitational force at one height but could then
move the ring above and below that height to check that their apparatus
detected gravity cleanly, free of background interference. Kapitulnik is
working on a much shorter range measurement of gravity and says he's never
discouraged by so-called null results that do not disprove Newton. "It's
important to do it, and somebody has to do it," he says. Del Newton C.d. Hoyle/T Corretto
Ancora.
Newton è basso corretto almeno a µm 200.
prevediamo.
dimensioni spaziali supplementari. Queste dimensioni sarebbero arricciate in
del disco superiore all' anello.
A 2 millimetri -- l' altezza dove l'
" è importante farlo e qualcuno deve farlo,
" dice. |

Dye Doesn't Follow Fluid Flow
It's a
morning ritual: Pour a cup of coffee, stir in some cream, and watch the color
lighten from nearly black to a pleasing brown. The cream diffuses quickly as
it traces the flow of coffee generated by your spoon. Most tracer particles
follow that routine in nature, but now researchers have found a twist. In the
12 February PRL, a team shows that subtle changes in the forces acting
on tracer particles can focus them within specific parts of the overall flow,
creating unexpected stripes or eddies of high concentration. The effect could
alter the rates of chemical reactions within mixing chambers, and it may
influence the motion of water droplets in the atmosphere. When
particles get mixed into a fluid, some follow random trajectories, blurring
into a smooth distribution throughout the fluid. In a cylindrical lab
container stirred by spinning disks, this chaotic mixing forms a
doughnut-shaped surface of whirling particles. However, other particles
travel along the toroidal surface on orbits that carry them past the same
spots again and again. Ordinarily
those repeated orbits don't stand out if all tracer particles follow the
chaotic fluid flow faithfully. But large or massive tracer particles can
concentrate along specific trajectories, so their flow pattern is not
representative of the overall flow. Now Fernando Muzzio and his colleagues at
Rutgers University in Piscataway, NJ, have accidentally discovered another
way to concentrate tracer particles into patterns: gradually alter their
buoyancies or densities. Graduate
student Mario Alvarez had prepared two batches of fluorescent dye to inject
into a cylindrical mixer containing glycerine. A batch of green dye was
neutrally buoyant, so it spread into the glycerine to form the expected
torus. However, a slightly less dense batch of red dye streaked into narrow
chains. This behavior was puzzling, but after more experiments and some
computer simulations, the cause seemed to be a time-dependent buoyancy: As
the red dye slowly floats up, it gradually spreads out and becomes less
buoyant. Parcels of dye may have enough upward speed to break into one of the
horizontal bands of glycerine flow but then lose buoyancy and become trapped
in them for long times. The dye would not form this pattern if it rose at a
constant rate. "Because there is a transient change in the density over
time, [the dye] becomes focused," says team member Troy Shinbrot.
"To me that is really bizarre." The
main application is in modeling chemical reactions, Shinbrot says. Local
temperature changes may cause some of the reactants to concentrate within
narrow regions as they flow through a mixing chamber, leading to different
reaction products in different spots. Shinbrot also speculates that transient
solar heating of water droplets in the air would alter their buoyancies
enough to form focused eddies, thus affecting the dynamics of clouds. The
research throws an interesting curve into models of how impurities travel
through dynamic fluids, says physicist Thomas Solomon of Bucknell University
in Lewisburg, PA. "This clearly is a new mechanism by which focusing can
occur within real flows," he says. "It merits more discussion, and
the paper throws it open for the community to try to interpret. La Tintura Non segue La Quantità di fluido
Phys. Rev. Lett.
vapore acqueo nell' atmosfera.
vostro cucchiaio.
particelle dell' elemento tracciante possono metterli a fuoco
When ottiene mixed in un
" a me che è realmente l'
The getta
interpretare" |

The Incredible Shrinking Nucleus
|
Objects
in nucleus may be smaller than they appear. At least, that's what a paper in
the 5 March PRL suggests. The authors measured the decay of a lithium
isotope that had at its core a lambda particle--a neutron with one of its two
down quarks replaced by a strange quark--and found that the nucleus had
shrunk. The lambda particle travels to the center of the nucleus and acts
to bind it more tightly together. This experiment is one of the first to give
physicists a look at interactions of such strange nucleons inside the nucleus.
In 1983
theorists predicted that the presence of a lambda particle inside a lithium
nucleus could cause it to shrink. Since a lambda is neither a proton nor
a neutron, it is not constrained by the Pauli exclusion principle, which
prevents identical nucleons from occupying the same space and defines the size
of the nucleus. This property allows the lambda to take up no space and to
slide into the center of a nucleus, where its strong binding energy pulls the
other nucleons closer together. But for almost twenty years, there was no
experiment that could confirm this prediction.
Now a
collaboration led by Kiyoshi Tanida of Tokyo University has found evidence that
nuclear shrinkage does exist. The team fired pions into a target of
lithium to produce lithium-lambda nuclei. They found the lifetime of these
excited nuclei by measuring the spectrum of gamma rays emitted when the
lithium-lambdas decayed to their ground state. "The lifetime is very
sensitive to the size of the nucleus," Tanida explains, so it led directly
to a size estimate.
This
experiment was challenging because it required an extremely accurate
measurement of the gamma rays, which were emitted in every direction from the
target. The team used an instrument called Hyperball, which consists of 14
high-resolution germanium detectors positioned in a spherical arrangement.
Hyperball is one of a handful of such sensitive spherical detector arrays
world-wide.
The researchers accounted for the fact that the lambda
particle takes up no space inside the nucleus but found that it shrunk by an
additional 19%, because of the lambda's tight binding. But Tanida admits that
using lifetime to measure size is not 100% accurate. "There are other
things that can change the lifetime, such as deformation of the nucleus,"
Tanida says. Still, the evidence is strong enough to gain the attention of
others in the field. "It's the first [experiment] that's ever been done in
this way," says John Millener of Brookhaven National Laboratory in New
York. Millener believes that gamma ray experiments like this will eventually
allow nuclear physicists to understand how strange impurities, like the lambda,
can affect the size, shape, and collective motion of nuclei.
Il Nucleo Shrinking Incredibile H.
Tamura/Tohoku Univ. Occhi sul
nucleo.
I ricercatori hanno usato Hyperball 14 rilevatori sensibili
per indicare che un quark sconosciuto
ristringe drammaticamente il
formato d'un nucleo.
Gli oggetti nel nucleo possono essere più
piccoli di compaiono.
Almeno, quello è ché carta nel 5 marzo PRL
suggerisce.
a
fisici uno sguardo alle interazioni di tali
nucleoni sconosciuti
all'interno del nucleo. In 1983 i teorici hanno predetto che la
presenza d'una particella di lambda
all'interno d'un nucleo del litio
potrebbe indurla a ristringere. Poiché una lambda è nè un protone
nè un neutrone, non è costretta dal
principio di esclusione di
Pauli, che impedisce i nucleoni identici l'
occupazione dello stesso
spazio e definisce il formato del
nucleo.
senso dall' obiettivo. La squadra ha utilizzato uno strumento
chiamato Hyperball, che consiste di 14
rilevatori ad alta definizione
del germanio posizionati in una disposizione
sferica. Hyperball è
uno d'una manciata di tali allineamenti
sferici sensibili del
rilevatore universalmente. I ricercatori hanno rappresentato il fatto
che la particella di lambda non prende
spazio all'interno del nucleo
19% supplementare, a causa
dice. Eppure, la prova è
abbastanza forte guadagnare l' attenzione di
altre nel campo. " è la
prima [ esperimento ] che è fatto mai in
questo modo, " dice John
Millener del laboratorio nazionale di
Brookhaven a New York. Millener
crede che gli esperimenti gamma del raggio
come questo finalmente
permettano che i fisici nucleari capiscano come
le impurità
sconosciute, come la lambda, possono
interessare il formato, la figura
ed il movimento collettivo dei nuclei.
