Appearing together at an NFL-sponsored charity event in San Diego, Steve Young and Jeff Garcia weighed in on the 49ers' coaching situation.

Both suggested they wouldn't be surprised if former coach and current team consultant Bill Walsh wound up being the coach. But that scenario seems highly unlikely, and in comments to USA Today this week, Walsh, 71, said he couldn't handle the eight-month grind of the NFL season.

Garcia also took the opportunity to backpedal on comments he made on KNBR (AM 680) suggesting speeches to the team by Walsh undermined Steve Mariucci, who was fired Jan. 15.

"I'm very appreciative of what coach Walsh has done for me," Garcia said. "And the fact that he supported me and gave me the opportunity to come to San Francisco and play for the 49ers. He has meant so much to me over these four years that I've been with the 49ers."

At Thursday's event, Young seemed to endorse the idea of Walsh as coach. "I'm sure if nobody emerges he'd raise his hand and volunteer," Young said.
