University of Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops apparently won't be the new coach of the 49ers, according to a story in Sunday's Daily Oklahoman.

Stoops, the paper reported, recently turned away inquiries from the 49ers, who fired Steve Mariucci last month.

A story citing unnamed sources in Saturday's San Francisco Chronicle said the 49ers were interested in Stoops and Rick Neuheisel of the University of Washington. However, neither the 49ers nor the schools would confirm contact by the principals.

Candidates for the job include 49ers defensive coordinator Jim Mora, New York Jets defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, and Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Greg Blache.

ESPN.com reported 49ers general manager Terry Donahue was expected to meet owner John York on Sunday to discuss the three candidates.

Last week, the Detroit Lions hired Mariucci as their coach.
