CIVIL WAR

IT WAS STILL AT THE STAGE OF CLUBS AND FISTS
WHEN THAT WELL-KNOWN FACE GOT BEATEN TO BITS
YOUR FACE WAS BLUE IN THE LIGHT OF THE SCREEN
AS WE WATCHED THE SPEECH OF AN ANIMAL SCREAM
THE NEW PARTY ARMY WAS MARCHING RIGHT OVER
	OUR HEADS

ALRIGHT

THERE YOU ARE, HA HA, I TOLD YOU SO
SAYS EVERYBODY THAT WE KNOW
BUT WHO HID A RADIO UNDER THE STAIRS
AN' WHO GOT CAUGHT OUT ON THEIR UNAWARES?
WHEN THAT NEW PARTY ARMY CAME MARCHING RIGHT
	UP THE STAIRS

WHEN JOHNNY COMES MARCHING HOME AGAIN
NOBODY UNDERSTANDS IT CAN HAPPEN AGAIN
THE SUN IS SHINING AN' THE KIDS ARE SHOUTING LOUD
BUT YOU GOTTA KNOW IT’S SHINING THROUGH A CRACK
	IN THE CLOUD
AND THE SHADOWS KEEP FALLING WHEN JOHNNY
	COMES MARCHING HOME

Four Horsemen Tablature

This song is played on a detuned guitar
(or maybe they slowed down the tape
in the studio.) The B is transcribed here as
a BMaj but something is taken
off. If you need to tune your guitar use the opening chord
and tune to it.
Aside from that it's pretty straight-forward.

Verse I
B A B
Well they were given the grapes that go ripe in the sun
That loosen the screws at the back of the tongue
But they told no one where they had begun-
E
four horsemen

Verse II (same chords)
They were given all the foods of vanity
And all the instant promises of immortality
But they bit the dust screamin' insanity!-
four horsemen

Verse III
One was over the edge, one was over the cliff
One was lickin' em dry with a bloody great spliff
When they picked up the hiker he didn't want the lift
From the horsemen

Chorus or Bridge
     E
But you!
A B E
You're not searching, are you now?
You're not looking anyhow
You're never gonna ride that lonely mile
Or put yourself up on trial
Oh, you told me how your life was so bad
An' I agree that it does seem sad
But that's the price that you gotta pay
If you're lazing all around all day
Four horsement coming right through
Four horsemen and they're pissing by you
They make you look like you're wearing a truss
Four hosemen and it's gonna be us

Verse IV
Well they gave useverything for bending the mind
ANd we cleaned out their pockets and we drank 'em blind
IT's a long way to the finish so don't get left behind
By those horsemen

Verse V
And they gave us the grapes that went ripe in the sun
That loosen the scews at the back of the tongue
But we still told nothing 'bout what was to come
Four horsemen

---------------------------------------------
--------3--3--------------------3--3---------
--3--5--------5--5--3--3--5--5--------5--5---

(repeats 4 times)

C
I would love to be the lucky one on Chill Avenue
Am
Who could keep your hear warm when ice has turned it blue
G
But with the beggin' sleeping losers as they turn in for the night
C
I'm looking back for home and I can see the lights

C
I should be jumpin' shoutin' that I made it all this way
Am
>From Camden Town Station to 44th and 8th
G
Not many make it this far and many say we're great
C
But just like them we walk on an' we can't escape our fate

Am F G
Can't you hear the sighing
C F
Eastside Jimmy and Southside Sue
     G Csus C
Both say they needed something new

CHORUS
       C
So I'm standing at the gates of the West
       Em
I burn money at the lights of the sign
		 F G C
The city casts a shadow of the perfect crime

I'm standing at the gates of the East
          Em
I take my pulse and the pulse of my friend
		 F G C
The city casts a shadow, will I see you again?

The immigrants an' remnants of all the glory years
Are clustered around the bar again for another round of beers
Little Richard's in the kitchen playing spoons and plates
He's telling the waitress he's great

Ah say I know somewhere back'n'forth in time
Out on the dustbowls, deep in the roulette mine
Or in a ghetto cellar only yesterday
There's a move into the future for the U.S.A.

I hear them crying
Eastside Jimmy and Southside Sue
Both say they needed something new

CHORUS

C Em Em Am Am F F
C Em Em Am Am F F
C Em Em Am Am F F C

(with chords from chorus)
Standing at the gates of the West
In the shadow again
Standing at the gates of the West
In the shadow again
In the shadow again

Ghetto Defendant Tablature

One of the most frustrating Clash songs to figure out for me is Ghetto
Defendant. There are twenty thousand things going on at once,
from Joe's
wailing, to Ginsberg's moaning, to Mick's Synth guitar
to wacky cowbells.
Here's what I could make of it. Play with right hand damping.
I included two
versions, neither of which I am positive is correct
in the last measure of the
riff. Anyone with corrections, please post.

Chorus riff version 1

e ----------------|------------------|--------------------|
b ----------------|------------------|--------------------|
g ----------------|-----------0------|--------------------|
d ----------------|--------2---------|------3---2-5-------|
a --0-3-2-0--0--- |---0-3--------0---|--3-5----5----3-2-0-|
e ----------------|------------------|--------------------|

Chorus riff version 2

e ----------------|-------------------|--------------------|
b ----------------|-------------------|------6---5-8-------|
g ----------------|-----------0-------|--5-7---7-----------|
d ----------------|--------2----------|--------------------|
a --0-3-2-0--0--- |---0-3--------0-0--|--------------3-2-0-|
e ----------------|-------------------|--------------------|

The verse riff. Play with vibrato to simulate the synth.
e ------------------|------------------|
b -5-5-5-5--6-8-X-X-|------------------|
g -5-5-5-5--5-5-----|------------------|
d ------------------|------------------|
