Analysis by Rob Baker, 49ers Clubhouse draft writer:
A
German native who is an impact pass rusher. Was second team All-Big East
in 1997 and 1998 and in the first team in 1999. He is mean, tough and created
interest with his all out hustle and intensity. Always put’s 100% into
training sessions and is very level headed. Can also play at tackle. May
have problems against the run in the NFL due to the fact he is a little
stiff laterally to make quick adjustments as a pass rusher. Has very quick
40 time, but doesn’t play up to it. Also isn’t that flexible and like Peterson
may have to hit the weight room. Comments: A player that plays 100%
in games and in training. Will compete with Byrant and Okeafor for starting
privileges.

Room AnalysisVs.
run: Self-made playmaker. Decent speed, above-average strength, technically
sound and exceptional motor. Disciplined off edge. Sideline-to-sideline
player. Legs will get taken out and has potential to get pushed around.
But should develop into tough run defender. Grade: 5.5
Pass rush:
Little flash but shows quick first step and will seal off passing lanes.
Polished rusher with excellent moves and feel for rush. Doesn’t show bull-rush
qualities and can be redirected if locked onto. Grade: 6.0
Initial
quicks: Explosive first step. Shoots gap well inside and can win battle
to corner on outside. Good dip of shoulder and comes off ball with leverage.
Grade:
6.0
Key and
diagnose: Knows assignments. Disciplined student of game. Reads keys
well and recognizes blocks. Grade: 6.0
Pursuit/tackling:
Effort-type player. Makes plays all over field. Solid tackler. Technically
sound and makes presence felt. Efficient in traffic. Will fight through
traffic and make plays because of athleticism. Grade: 5.5
Notable:
Originally joined Tech as walk-on tight end.
Final analysis:
Perfect approach to game. Not flashy player, but scouts love playmaking
skills and mentality. Has frame to add size. With experience, will become
one of better all-around ends.
Info from
Pro Football Weekly:
Notes: Was born in
Germany. Walked on in 1995 as a tight end and redshirted. Moved to defensive
end in the spring of '96 and earned a scholarship. Played in every game
that fall, starting six. Had 64 tackles and six sacks. Was a second-team
All-Big East defensive lineman in '97 and '98 and a first-teamer in '99,
when he also made some All-America teams. Had 70 tackles, including nine
for loss, and six sacks in '97; 66-9-7.5 in '98; and 52-6-7 in '99, when
he started eight games at end and the other three at tackle.
Positives: Mean, tough
and nasty. Rugged and stoic. Lets his playing do his talking. Has the type
of disposition and intensity scouts look for in a defensive lineman. A
workout warrior with exceptional timed speed. Has been clocked as fast
as 4.55 seconds in the 40. Hustles and is at his best when he does not
have to sit inside but is on the move making things happen as he goes.
Can play end or tackle. Seems to have a knack for blocking kicks.
Negatives: Does not
play to his timed speed. Does not have great quick twitch or burst like
Hokies teammate Corey Moore. Engelberger lacks outstanding foot athleticism
and has too many stops and starts in his play instead of doing everything
together. Is not that nifty or flexible. Tends to play too upright at times,
and that hurts his playing strength. May not weigh enough to play inside
on the next level.
Summary: Plays hard
and generally plays well but did not dominate the way Moore did.
Info from CBS SportsLine:
Intense senior defender finished
a fine career with first team Big East honors on the nationally ranked
defense. Engelberger has been one of the most consistent performers in
the nation over his career since starting as a redshirt freshman. He entered
Tech as a walk-on and began as a tight end until moving to defense early
in his first year.
He has a strong narrow wiry frame
and uses his long arms well, to keep blockers off his body. He has a great
motor and combined with his quickness on the snap and speed, allows him
to pursue and make plays sideline to sideline. During his senior season,
he made 53 tackles with 6 TFLs, 7 sacks and 16 hurries in an effort that
was instrumental in the Hokies challenge for the national title. His best
game came against arch rival Virginia when he posted 7 tackles with 4 TFLs,
2 sacks and 2 QB hurries. He has been productive throughout his career
and his numbers are remarkably similar from year to year.
As a junior, he recorded 66
tackles with 9 TFLs, 7.5 sacks and a team leading 20 QB hurries. He possesses
keen instincts with the athletic talent to make plays. He plays hard the
entire game, getting full use of his good skills. He has been a workout
warrior who bench presses 440 lbs. and has been timed in the 4.55 range.
Despite his strength, he does not hold the point of attack well and lacks
the powerful lower body to match up with 300 lb. plus tackles regularly.
He has the intangibles needed to become a starter in the NFL with the great
motor to make a difference on many plays.
He did not participate in any postseason
all-star games. As a sophomore, he recorded 70 tackles with 9 TFLs and
6 sacks and another huge performance against Virginia. He has the quickness
to get upfield and flashes those skills regularly. He uses his hands well
to get off blockers but can be driven off the play at the point of attack.
He is better in pursuit where his speed allows him to chase down ball carriers
from the backside.
At the combine, he ran a 4.73
time with a 34" vertical leap, a 9'7" broad jump and 24 reps in the lifting.
He ran a sub 4.6 time at a private workout. He is a tough defender who
is not a blue chip athlete, though he is a player you can not discount
off his effort throughout college. Top 60 pick. Rugged prospect with the
tools and intangibles to become a factor off the edge.
Info from CNN/SI:
Former walk-on. Has started since
his freshman year. Somewhat lean, but well-built. Athletic. Has good speed.
Versatile. Used primarily at end, but has seen action inside. Quick off
the ball. Attacks with good lean and uses his hands well. Not a strong
anchor but he sheds well and has quick feet and good redirection. Agile.
Works through traffic well. A little inconsistent in pursuit intensity.
Efficient tackler but not explosive. Above average pass rusher. Doesn't
have flashy moves but he shows power on his inside charge and has a burst
around the corner.
