Analysis by Rob Baker, 49ers Clubhouse draft writer:

Excels at stopping the run. Ulbrich continues San Francisco’s 2000’s drafting tradition of players who play the game with passion and works of field just as hard. Ulbrich is always around the ball and anticipates well, which helps im to be so good vs. the run.Has had knee surgery before, tearing his medial collateral ligament and his anteior cruciate ligament, which may be a concern and also may be the cause of his problem of changing direction fluently. Needs to develop his coverage skills, but makes up for it with his ability to tackle.
Comments: Had an excellent senior season. San Francisco may be preparing him for Ken Norton retirement.

War Room Analysis
Short, squatty player with good leverage vs. run and excellent natural athletic ability. Shows a lot of flash. Outstanding footwork; plays with a lot of lateral movement. Has upfield burst and ability to get to quarterback as pass rusher. Needs to improve recognition skills; has some trouble making reads. When he locates ball, has excellent speed and quickness in flow. Active player who will get to flats and close off lanes to outside. Physical tackler who plays with good leverage. Biggest obstacle is taking on isolation blocks in running game. Easily engulfed by bigger defenders if he does not have time to see block coming and avoid contact.
Notable: Married to a former Hawaiian Tropics model.
Overall grade: 24.0

Info from Pro Football Weekly:

Notes: Redshirted at San Jose State in 1995. Dropped out and went to work in sheet metal in '96. Got back into football at Gavilan Junior College in '97. Came to Hawaii in '98, when he had 41 tackles and one sack. Missed five games with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament, which were suffered in the Brigham Young game in the middle of October. All-conference linebacker and the team's leading tackler in '99, when he had 169 stops, eight sacks and 16 tackles for loss. Started the year by taking part in 17 tackles vs. USC.

Positives: Great intensity and hustle. Very aggressive player who wants to be in on every play. Has good instincts and awareness, especially vs. the run. Anticipates well, does not take many false steps and gets to the ball quickly. Has a short, explosive burst to the ball and straight-line running speed. Can blitz and likes to dog the quarterback. Overall play improved dramatically from '98 to '99. Has a special-teamer's mentality.

Negatives: Looks all pumped up and has almost no growth potential. On the short side and is a little stiff and mechanical in his reverse movements in pass coverage. Lacks fluidity in pass drops and change of direction. Does not have long arms and has some trouble getting off blocks. Surgical knee still must be checked out.

Summary: Has limitations but is an achiever with the intangibles, speed, explosiveness and LB mentality scouts look for.

Info from CBS SportsLine:

Mobile strong athlete has started since late in his junior season and really came on this past year with several impressive efforts. His fine senior season brought him an invite to the Senior Bowl in January.

At the Senior Bowl practices, he showed nice agility along the line but struggled at the point of attack in run support. He gets bounced around on the inside and has trouble shedding blockers. He has good instincts with the ability to finish the play with sure tackling.

He has shown some quickness off the edge as a pass rusher. At the combine, he ran a 4.69 time with a 32" vertical leap and a 9'1" broad jump. He did 24 reps in the lifting, the most of the inside backers.

Versatile defender with good intangibles but only marginal athletic skills. Possible late pick. Needs to impress on special teams to earn a roster spot.

Info from CNN/SI:

JuCo transfer. Returned from a junior knee injury to have a big senior year. A short inside backer with thick legs, a muscular upper body and good strength. Physical. Takes on blocks tough. Separates well. Needs to protect his legs better and locate quicker. Gets walled off some but he's a relentless chaser who works hard in pursuit and has good speed. Strong tackler. Strikes with force and wraps well. A little stiff. Lacks quick change of direction. Only adequate in pass defense. Has good special teams potential. Impressed at the Senior Bowl.
