Deckard had been hired by LAPD in the 2014. He had taken service as a street cop for about a year then he has been taken as head of a Blade Runner unit. He has set department records for the most skin jobs retired by a single officer and the most retired in one day since The Great Purge of 2011. His wife left him about a year ago. That really fucked him up inside. Sick of killing, he lost his edge, his killer instinct. So he quit. Now Bryant has forced him to take back his old job. He has to find and kill the escaped Replicants.

Rick Deckard is a great noir character. Dry, down on his luck, enjoys a shot or two of "the drink". He even frequents seedy places, including his own apartment. Blade Runner is the first and still the best example of the combining of film-noir and science fiction.
