There is nothing bad if just in the middle of a kernel related talk some people spin off to discuss mail servers. What is really bad is when they do it under the old subject. Threading becomes useless, and mail archives too, since nobody will find relevant info easily.
(not to mention when one just hits "reply" to ask whatever totally unrelated question just because it's faster than "compose"
