This mock draft gives a brief overview
of what the chatter is within NFL front offices at this time and also looks
at where players' stock is currently lying within the league. From talking
to many people around the league, this should give you a good idea of how
things are currently shaping up for the first round.
1.Cleveland Browns
LaVar Arrington LB Penn State
The Browns have been intrigued with
the possibility of flanking Jamir Miller with Arrington for a couple months.
But their intrigue could become reality with Arrington's workout.
2.New York Jets (from Washington
Redskins through New Orleans)
Courtney Brown DE Penn State
Normally we wouldn't do this, but
we will show you how the draft would fall out if the Jets-Redskins trade
goes through. Brown would give the Jets an impact defensive player who
will command a lot of attention upfront and give life to the Jets pass
rush.
3. Washington Redskins (from San
Francisco)
Chris Samuels OT Alabama
Championship teams need a solid
left tackle. You can't get more solid than with Samuels who is fluid in
pass protection and shows ability as a run blocker.
4.Cincinnati Bengals
Peter Warrick WR Florida State
Warrick is a no-brainer for the
Bengals as they look to help Akili Smith and the passing game develop.
Warrick gives the Bengals many options in the passing game.
5.Baltimore Ravens (from Atlanta)
Travis Taylor WR Florida
The Ravens would love to trade down
here, but if they are stuck, Taylor is their man. Taylor is a very polished
receiver with good speed.
6.Philadelphia Eagles
Corey Simon DT Florida State
The Eagles biggest priority outside
of finding a play-maker on offense is finding a interior defender who can
provide pressure. Simon fits that role, but if the Eagles have questions
regarding his health, they could trade down for Bubba Franks or Jerry Porter.
7.Arizona Cardinals
Thomas Jones RB Virginia
The Cardinals are praying for Jones
to remain on the board here as they look to upgrade their run game. If
Jones is off the board, they could opt for Jamal Lewis, Brian Urlacher,
or trade down.
8.Pittsburgh Steelers
Brian Urlacher LB New Mexico
Burress could be the obvious target,
but character comes into question here. Urlacher would become a leader
on defense at some point and the Steelers need more leaders.
9.Chicago Bears
Plaxico Burress WR Michigan State
Urlacher would be a major consideration
if he is on the board, but Burress is just too hard to pass up because
his physical skills create interesting matchups in the passing game.
10.Denver Broncos
Chad Pennington QB Marshall
The organization is having more
concerns about their future at quarterback and Mike Shanahan is intrigued
by the intangibles of Pennington. Pennington is a smart guy who would fit
in well as he gains better accuracy and would bring much needed leadership
to the Broncos.
11.New York Giants
Ron Dayne RB Wisconsin
The Giants love big backs, but also
are looking for more explosiveness on offense. Though Dayne could be too
tough to pass up as a ball control back. Alabama's Shaun Alexander is still
a consideration.
12. San Francisco 49ers (from Washington
through Carolina)
Darren Howard DE Kansas State
The 49ers would like to generate
more pressure from the defensive edge next season. Howard would be a great
fit to play the 49er old elephant type scheme although Howard would be
a reach here.
13.Tampa Bay Buccaneers (from San
Diego)
Jerry Porter WR West Virginia
The Bucs need more weapons in their
passing game for next season. Porter has the physical tools they want at
the position now.
14.Green Bay Packers
Shaun Ellis DE Tennessee
The front seven is a priority for
the Packers as they could stop the run last season and their pass rush
lacked enough juice. Ellis can help replenish lost numbers over the past
year.
15.Baltimore Ravens
Jamal Lewis RB Tennessee
The Ravens love Lewis, who is a
solid runner with good size and he also has a good feel for the passing
game.
16. Washington Redskins (From New
York Jets through New England)
Keith Bulluck LB Syracuse
If the trade goes through, Syracuse's
Keith Bulluck is their target if he is still on the board. Bulluck would
add some juice to a vanilla linebacking corps.
17.Oakland Raiders
Dez White WR Georgia Tech
Wide receiver is one of the biggest
holes for the Raiders as they look to develop their passing game. White
has the size that Jon Gruden wants and has the tools to develop into a
play-maker.
18.New York Jets
Daniel Franks TE Miami
They would like a receiver to replace
Johnson if they trade him, but tight end is a major hole in the passing
game. They Jets would Franks and would have no objections towards adding
him to the roster.
19.Seattle Seahawks
Rob Morris LB Brigham Young
While the Seahawks have a few holes
on offense, they still have a lot of holes on defense. Morris would bring
some toughness on defense and would plug up holes in their run defense.
20.Detroit Lions
Shaun Alexander RB Alabama
Although the Lions signed James
Stewart, they still need depth and insurance behind him. Alexander would
be a solid option in the Lions offense, especially in the passing game.
21.Kansas City Chiefs
Ahmed Plummer CB Ohio State
The Chiefs would like a big corner
with toughness, but they need a young corner who can cover. Plummer isn't
a play-maker yet, but is a steady cover guy. If the right runner or receiver
falls to them, the Chiefs will likely go in that direction.
22.Seattle Seahawks
Chris Hovan DT Boston College
The Seahawks lost some numbers on
the defensive line and need some help replenishing it. Hovan would bring
some quickness and toughness upfront.
23.Carolina Panthers (from Miami)
John Abraham LB South Carolina
The Panthers hope to replace the
production they lost at linebacker from Kevin Greene. Lee Woodall can do
more things, but he is not the pass rusher Greene was.
24. San Francisco 49ers (from Washington)
Rashard Anderson CB Jackson State
The 49ers continue their intrigue
with Anderson who is on the raw side, but has a lot of upside due to his
size and athletic ability.
25.Minnesota Vikings
Ike Charlton CB Virginia Tech
Its no secret what the Vikings need.
Charlton would give the club a physical corner with size and someone with
a feel for zone coverage.
26.Buffalo Bills
John Engelberger DE Virginia
Tech
The Bills are looking to replenish
depth on defense at cornerback and along the defensive line. Engelberger
has the attitude the Bills want on defense and would help recover some
pass rush potential lost from Bruce Smith's release.
27.Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Stockar McDougle OT Oklahoma
The Buccaneers need more numbers
on the offensive line and McDougle also has the size and physical skills
to help the club dominate the point of attack.
28.Indianapolis Colts
Julian Peterson LB Michigan State
The club would like to have Rob
Morris or Chris Hovan, but Peterson is a fallback option if he is still
on the board here.
29.Jacksonville Jaguars
Travis Claridge OG Southern California
The Jaguars need to make their Super
Bowl run next season, but can't until they add toughness upfront on offense.
Claridge could help stabilize the offensive line next season and bring
a needed attitude adjustment upfront.
30.Tennessee Titans
Todd Pinkston WR Southern Mississippi
The Titans need some diversity in
the passing game. Many teams are high on Pinkston, who is a very reliable
option in the passing game.
31.St. Louis Rams
Marvel Smith OT Arizona State
The Rams could option for someone
like teammate Erik Flowers, but tackle is more of an immediate need at
this time. Smith is a highly rated lineman who brings solid depth and insurance.

2. New Orleans Saints R.
