http://spazioinwind.libero.it/iconografia/stefano.htm

http://spazioinwind.libero.it/iconografia/Andreastoria.htm

http://spazioinwind.libero.it/iconografia/Sgregitaliano.htm

http://spazioinwind.libero.it/iconografia/Gregancoraita.htm

http://spazioinwind.libero.it/iconografia/Piantacentrale.htm )

Pietro e Paolo, appunto N.d.A.).

Hypothesis about the presence of churches –dated to the Vth. cent.- outside the gates of the walls of Ariminum.

10. Thanks be to Thee, Lord Jesus, that at this time Thou hast stirred up for us the spirits of the holy martyrs, when The Church needs greater protection. Let all know what sort of champions I desire, who are able to defend, but desire not to attack. These have I gained for you, O holy people, such as may help all and injure none. Such defenders do I desire, such are the soldiers I have, that is, not soldiers of this world, but soldiers of Christ. I fear no ill-will on account of them, the more powerful their patronage is the greater safety is there in it. And I wish for their protection for those very persons who grudge them to me. Let them come, then, and see my attendants. I do not deny that I am surrounded by such arms: "Some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we will boast in the Name of the Lord our God."

11. The course of divine Scripture relates that Elisha, when surrounded by the army of the Syrians, told his servant, who was afraid, not to fear; "for," said he, "they that be for us are more than those against us;" and in order to prove this, he prayed that the eyes of Gehazi might be opened, and when they were opened, he saw that numberless hosts of angels were present. And we, though we cannot see them, yet feel their presence. Our eyes were shut, so long as the bodies of the saints lay hidden. The Lord opened our eyes, and we saw the aids wherewith we have been often protected. (…..).

Ambrogio, Lettera 22

" towns are non fortified by the walls anymore, but by the saints"

1975.

It’s been necessary to report the quotations here above to explain our hypothesis about the reason or the reasons because some churches were built outside the gates of Ariminum, in the age of Galla Placidia.

(You can find information about these churces in the following pages:

http://spazioinwind.libero.it/iconografia/stefano.htm

http://spazioinwind.libero.it/iconografia/Sgreginglese.htm

http://spazioinwind.libero.it/iconografia/Gregancoraingl.htm

http://spazioinwind.libero.it/iconografia/Andreastoria.htm

http://spazioinwind.libero.it/iconografia/Piantacentrale.htm )

Probably a more careful search would have found other similar quotations, maybe even more relevant for the subject we are dealing with.

It’s anyway quite known that, the cult of the relics of the martyrs became extremely important in the Christendom since the end of the IVth. cent, mainly thanks to the activity of the bishop Ambrose.

The relics were (and are) considered inhabited by the divinity.

In fact, following the New Testament, they are the rests of the bodies of them who are already living in Christ : the martyrs. They are actually those who were beheaded because of the word of Christ (Riv. 20, 4-6); St. John, in his apocaliptic vision, saw the martyrs in front of the altar, waiting for the second coming of Christ; they won’t meet the second death and the Last Judgement when, in the End Time, the resurrected body will join the soul.

So, the relics –"already" inhabited by the divine Presence – were considered real "defences" of the towns.

Avitus reports: "…towns are not fortified anymore with walls but with the saints".

Once said that, we can add that,in our hypothesis, the presence of reliquary –churches (see other pages on this website) outside the riminesi gates, probably can be related just to the aim of defence for the gates themselves; this could be got thanks to the divine Presence inhabiting the relics.

We think that these riminesi buildings probably can be ascribed to the patronage of Galla Placidia.

She was in Milan during the episcopate of St. Ambrose.

The future empress was certainly impressed by the theology of the milanese bishop and, actually, her deep religiousness and her devotion for the relics of saints are well known.

So, we can guess that, during the stay of the empress in Ariminum, she conceived an organic program for the building of churches to allow the "defence" of the town with the presence of important relics just outside the walls of the town.

We can notice:

1) the gate on the roman Flaminia, the road leading to Rome, was protected by two reliquary - churches built on the two sides of the road, close to the town;

2) Porta Montanara, the gate – dated to the age of Silla – rising on the very ancient road leading to Arretium, seems to have been defended by the presence of Sant’Andrea fuori le mura.

We know that Galla Placidia, after a quite long stay, had to leave Ariminum because of the death of St. Barbatianus.

Maybe was this the reason because the program of building was not completed?

We cannot answer this question. Anyway, if our hypothesis is true, we can try to guess the situation described by this picture (click on the URL above) http://spazioinwind.libero.it/iconografia/riminipiantachiese.jpg

Finally:

What has been said so far depends on what we know about palaeo –christian riminesi churches rising on the roads leading to Rome and Arezzo. Nothing can be said about the northern gate of the town (directions for Bologna and Ravenna); in that zone we find a suburb whose ancient history is witnessed by rests of roman – republican age.

We can only point out the presence, in this suburb, of a church dedicated to SS. Pietro e Paolo; we know that in the XVIIth. cent. (1), during some digs under the floor of this building, they found out a stone of roman age with a dedication to Genius Ariminensis.

It's known they used to build temples dedicated to the genii outside the walls, just to protect the towns.

After the find of important relics of San Giuliano on the seaside -XIIth cent.- , the church of SS. Pietro e Paolo took the name of San Giuliano, Pietro e Paolo.

(1)The existence of this building is documented since 816 a. C. with the name of San Pietro.

Dealing with the church of SS. Pietro e Paolo, Cesare Clementini seems to quote vague sources, but actually he reports very important information about ancient religious traditions of the town: We cannot actually state who was the founder of this temple. Someone thinks it was built -and dedicated to Santo Stefano- by Galla Placidia, , mother of emperor Valentinianus; others quote the name of Theodoricus - king of Ostrogoths- and a dedication to the (already quoted) (same) saint; but , for reasons described above, it cannot be S. Pietro because there is memory here of only one Santo Stefano (that’s the church outside Porta Romana N. d.A) Cesare Clementini: Racconto istorico…ParteII, p.243. Rimini, 1616.

In the riminese tradition we can find the thematic of the defence of the town that’s got thanks to the building of churches in the same words of Clementini.

Speaking of temples built in places where there were some miracles ascribed to the intercession of the Virgin, he reports: These three temples in honor of Mary make a wonderful triangle, perfect number, and, like impregnable ramparts, they will ward and protect the town of Rimino. Cesare Clementini: Trattato dei luoghi pii, pp. IX-X .
