When
the San Francisco 49ers drafted Jerry Rice in 1985, they knew they were
getting a good player. What they didn't know was that they were getting
the best ever receiver in football history. With the San Francisco 49ers
he caught more passes for more yards and more touchdowns than anyone who
has ever lived.
He owns every meaningful career
receiving records, he has played his best in his biggest games. Rice has
been NFL Most Valuable Player and a Super Bowl MVP.
There is more to Rice than just
catching the ball. He runs out his patterns even when he doesn't think
he is getting the ball, to keep defense honest, and he even relishes blocking,
which few receivers like to do.
His talents are enourmous, but they
pale in comparison to his drive. Rice's work ethic and maniacal competitive
edge have carried him beyond all previously astablished standards of excellence.
In a time when so many athletes
fail to live up to their status as would-be heroes, Rice stand out as someone
who conducts himself with class on and off the field and who represent
society's most cherished values: succes through hard work, treating your
peers and your opponenets with respect, accepting responsability for yours
actions.
"I was born with a very special
gift that has taken years to develop and refine. In my mind I know I can
always get better; and each and every day I try to do something to reach
my goals of being the best father, husband, friend, and yes... football
player.
My biggest fear is that someday
I might fail, and that's what motivates me to keep my motor running at
the highest level possible no matter what I'm doing, or when I'm doing
it.
I've learned some very important
lessons in the last months and I realizes now more than ever how really
fragile life can be.
Sometime we tend to move so fast
we don't take the time to enjoy what is happening around us. No one is
invincible and I truly understand how blessed I have been".
"When I look at him and I analyze
what he does and I see how he approches his game - and his life, becouse
I think the game is his life - I develop these feelings of inadequacy.
It is almost as though he operates on a different level. He goes out at
night with Zeus, while the rest of us wallow down in the valley with mere
mortals."
