HIGH SCHOOL: USA Today first team All-American
HOMETOWN: San Jose, California.
BIRTH DATE: May 12, 1979.
COLLEGE: American Studies major.

POSITIVES: His work ethic is a major upside. He works hard, dedicated and determined to succeeding. Andre is also very coachable and possesses a great character. He is also very intelligent. Never gives up and plays hard every on play of every down. Could play strong or weakside, but has spent most of his college career at strong side. Excels in pass rushing, but is also an outstanding run stopper. Has long arms, many moves, he’s a great athlete and has excellent balance and agility. Has got a massive leap. Has improved after every year at Cal. Is technically the most technically sound defender in this years draft.

NEGATIVES: Undersized. There is concerns about his light weight and may be a little to small to be an every-down NFL end. Weighed only 249 at the Combine. He looks more to be a basketball player with his narrow waist. Doesn’t use all his skills, often being to disciplined to experiment and drift from his assignment.

COMMENTS: Son of former Bronco and current Redskins defensive line coach Rubin Carter. Andre was recruited by Steve Mariucci at Cal.

Jamie Winborn

1997: Redshirt
HIGH SCHOOL: Played HB and LB. Also lettered in track.
HOMETOWN: Wetumpka, Alabama.
BIRTH DATE: May 14, 1979.
COLLEGE: Human and Organizational Development major.

POSITIVES: Experienced and consistent three year starter, not missing a game, apart from two in which he was suspended for financial reasons. He is tough, intense and aggressive. Reacts quickly and rellies on instinct. He is quick and explosive. Jamie is small, but is built thick and is well developed physically. Tackles low and has great speed, roaming sideline to sideline. Great run stopper and is great on the blitz. Has natural talent, and is very passionate.

NEGATIVES: A tad too short. Unlike Carter, he guesses and gambles a lot of the time, mainly when taking on blockers. Doesn’t see the ball well at times either. Coverage is weak because he has never been asked to play in coverage, all though it is improving and should end up being a good cover guy.

COMMENTS: Will be a weak side LB. Could be a surprise, has the tools, needs
to be taught how to use them.

POSITIVES: Has excellent size and has great speed. Excels running on the outside. He can block and catch. Runs with power and makes defenders miss. Most impressive back at the Senior Bowl. Has improved every year. A great runner when let loose on the outside.

NEGATIVES: Has underachieved during college and has been inconsistent. Had fumbling trouble in his senior year and was benched as a result. Looses focus sometimes and doesn’t have great vision. Can be difficult to coach. Not a great inside runner.

COMMENTS: A steal in the third round, but a player that could be a star, or a bust.

COMMENTS ABOUT DAY 1:
San Francisco picked players that could all go either way. They could either be great players, and in Carter’s case an All-Pro, and in Barlow’s and Winborn’s Pro-Bowl, or they could all be busts, Carter’s height hurting him, Winborn’s gambling hurting him, Barlow’s reputation as being difficult and fumbling problems continue. All three will probably have starting positions from day one, Winborn could be the exception though. If everything goes right, this will be a day one to remember.
