Hi niner fans,
My last ‘If I was Bill Walsh’ draft
stirred up a lot of controversy from you guys. Well, here’s an updated
one, but this time I’ve added what I think the real Bill Walsh would do
and what my 2001 depth chart would look like. Enjoy.
Rob Baker.
Round 1: Jamal Reynolds
Florida St. DE
I would go for a CB, but none are
worthy of a number 9 selection. I am a guy who like strong defences,
one like Baltimore, when people come up against it they shiver, and coaches
stay up all night worrying about how they’re going to get yardage on Sunday.
Reynold’s though would be my third choice among DEs, Justin Smith at one,
and Andre Carter at two. But Reynold is still an amazing talent who deserves
to be taken this high. He’s great at getting to the passer and is very
athletic.
Bill Walsh’s pick : LaDainian
Tomlinson TCU HB
Round 2: Willie Middlebrooks
Minnesota CB
I’m not a big fan of Jason Webster,
but I am a fan of big CBs, which Middlebrooks is, at 6-2. It may
be a bit too high for him, but he is a definite second rounder, and he
is still improving. It would also make the niners defensive backs a major
strength,
with Plummer and Middlebrooks at the corners, Keith and Shulters at safety
and Webster as a nickel, it would pretty much guarantee that the 49ers
won’t have a repeat of the pass protection problems of two seasons back
and the start of last.
Bill Walsh’s pick : Cedrick Scott
Southern Miss DE
Round 3: Keith Adams
Clemson OLB
Again, this is to strengthen the
defense. With the inclusion of Derek Smith, it takes away the need for
another starting LB, but backups are needed, badly. This is also to help
push Jeff Ulbrich, and make him work for the starting position alongside
Smith and Peterson.
Bill Walsh’s pick : Javis Borum
NC State OT
Round 4: Travis Minor
Florida St. HB
Your probably asking now, why wait
until Round 4 to take a HB? Well, with Garcia, Owens, Clark, Stokes, Streets,
the offence has an amazing pass attack, so really, all the niners need
is a guy that can take a few carries in a game. And this also gives Garrison
Hearst a chance to regain his previous form, and if Hearst does come back
to be a Pro Bowler, that’d be a first rounder waisted on a HB. This way,
it gives a guy with a lot of talent a go, and if it doesn’t work out, there’s
next years draft to take a HB, and the niners wont have to worry about
a DE or a third down back.
Bill Walsh’s pick : Eric Westmoreland
Tennessee OLB
Round 6: John Capel
Florida WR
This guy has amazing speed, he runs
a 4.3 40. Will be a return man, but could also be used to go down the sidelines
and spread out the defence. A guy with speed like this is rare, so the
niners should snap him up and solve their return problems.
Bill Walsh’s pick : John Capel
Florida WR
Round 7: Kendrick Rodgers
Alabama A&M OT
A big guy at 6-5 295lbs, which would
give a bit of added depth to the OL. May develop into a starter one day,
but will be a backup for now.
Bill Walsh’s pick : Claude Davis
Central Oklahoma DT
Round 7: Jason Eberhart
Oregon DT
Eberhart has nice speed and would
give depth to a position that looks shaky, with Buckner’s return questioned
and Junior Bryant’s possible career ending injury. Maybe it might be time
to try Reggie McGrew, everyone’s classified him as a bust, but has he been
give a decent go yet??
Bill walsh’s pick : Bryon Thweatt
Virgina OLB
