The Sporting News - The War Room Mock Draft
The War Room For The Sporting News
Apr.18, 2001

Round 1 | Round 2

PICK TEAM PLAYER POS SCHOOL
1 (1) Chargers Michael Vick QB Virginia Tech
With Doug Flutie on board to be the tutor, the Chargers seem prepared to take Vick -- the most exciting QB prospect of a generation.
2 (2) Cardinals Gerard Warren DT Florida
If the Cardinals cannot trade down -- which we don't think they will -- coach Dave McGinnis will take the top defensive lineman. Is that Warren or Justin Smith?
3 (3) Browns David Terrell WR Michigan
The Browns could go a lot of different directions with this pick, including trading down for more picks, but Terrell makes the most sense for a team in need of another weapon for franchise QB Tim Couch.
4 (4) Bengals Leonard Davis T Texas
Bengals officials have a difficult decision and many holes, but we hear that they are determined to take the best-available offensive tackle.
5 (5) Falcons Justin Smith DE Missouri
Smith would be a blessing for the Falcons. His ability to defend the run and rush the passer instantly would upgrade one of the league's worst defensive lines.
6 (6) Patriots Kenyatta Walker T Florida
Don't believe reports you hear about the Patriots' plans because coach Bill Belichick is great at concealing his intentions. We think the talk of a DT is a smoke screen. Walker makes the most sense.
7 (7) Seahawks Koren Robinson WR NC State
(From Dallas) The Seahawks will not wait until their second pick of this round (No. 17) to address the receiver position, especially if Robinson is still on the board.
8 (8) Bears LaDainian Tomlinson RB Texas Christian
The Bears have a lot of needs on defense, but Tomlinson instantly would balance the offensive attack.
9 (9) 49ers Deuce McAllister RB Mississippi
Niners officials intend to improve their defense in the draft, but a franchise back like McAllister has too much value to let pass.
10 (10) Packers Richard Seymour DT Georgia
(from Seattle) The Packers take a wide receiver or defensive tackle here, but with so much depth at receive it makes sense to take the best-available tackle.
11 (11) Panthers Dan Morgan OLB Miami (Fla.)
Panthers officials hope Tomlinson or McAllister drop to them, but if they're gone, Morgan would fill a huge need.
12 (12) Chiefs Santana Moss WR Miami (Fla.)
This is a critical decision for Chiefs officials. Do they reach for running back Michael Bennett or take a playmaking receiver like Moss and hope a back falls to them in the second round?
13 (13) Jaguars Jamal Reynolds DE Florida State
Jaguars officials would not flinch if Reynolds still is available. The Jags need a pass-rushing end to complement Tony Brackens. If Reynolds isn't available, Andre Carter probably would be their guy.
14 (14) Bills Andre Carter DE California
Bills officials have every intention of taking a defensive lineman in the first round (and probably the second), and Carter would be far and away the best on the board.
15 (15) Redskins Steve Hutchinson G Michigan
Although in dire need of a top receiver, it would be just like Marty Schottenheimer to draft the top guard first before addressing the receiver position in Round 2.
16 (16) Steelers Jamar Fletcher CB Wisconsin
Questions surround his height but not his ability to cover, which is why Steelers officials would love to add Fletcher to their marginally talented secondary.
17 (17) Seahawks Marcus Stroud DT Georgia
(from Green Bay) If Seahawks officials take a WR with the No. 7 pick, they will draft either a CB or DT here. Stroud would be a good fit because he can contribute 10-15 plays right away behind John Randle and Chad Eaton.
18 (18) Lions Nate Clements CB Ohio State
Lions officials will go after a DE or CB, but Clements' size and playmaking ability would give the Lions insurance in case Bryant Westbrook's Achilles' injury is worse than originally thought.
19 (19) Jets Damione Lewis DT Miami (Fla.)
If Lewis is still on the board when the Jets pick, it's a done deal.
20 (20) Rams Shaun Rogers DT Texas
The Rams are in desperate need of a big, physical defensive tackle who will help right away against the run.
21 (21) Buccaneers Jeff Backus T Michigan
This would be a perfect pick. The Bucs need an OT, and Backus is a sure thing. He isn't the most physically dominating OT, but he has a nasty disposition and a great resume as a four-year Big Ten starter.
22 (22) Colts Fred Smoot CB Mississippi State
The Colts rarely take players with character issues, but Smoot is too good of a cover corner to pass at this point.
23 (23) Saints Freddie Mitchell WR UCLA
We think the Saints' biggest need is CB, but team officials disagree. Mitchell reminds us of Peter Warrick in terms of lateral movement and the ability to make plays.
24 (24) Broncos Rod Gardner WR Clemson
Gardner is a hot name. The Broncos need his combination of size and speed at the No. 3 receiver spot.
25 (25) Eagles Chad Johnson WR Oregon State
Johnson's stock has dropped significantly after he ran a 4.6 in the 40 recently, but the Eagles would be ecstatic if he were to fall to them.
26 (26) Dolphins Drew Brees QB Purdue
This pick would not shock anybody. Brees is more talented than starter Jay Fiedler and certainly has more upside, so the pick makes perfect sense.
27 (27) Vikings Michael Bennett RB Wisconsin
Bennett would fill an immediate need after Robert Smith's retirement.
28 (28) Raiders Todd Heap TE Arizona State
After ridding themselves of unproductive Ricky Dudley, the Raiders would like to start over with Heap, the top tight end.
29 (29) Rams Derrick Gibson S Florida State
(From Titans) Many people say Adam Archuleta is the top safety, but we disagree. If Gibson is coached properly and continues to develop, he has a chance to be a standout NFL player.
30 (30) Giants Ken Lucas CB Mississippi
The Giants need to add some size and playmaking ability at cornerback, and Lucas is a good value this late in the first round.
31 (31) Ravens Dominic Raiola C Nebraska
Raiola would be the perfect fit for a Ravens team that needs to add some talent to its interior line. Raiola could play center, which would allow Mike Flynn to move back to his natural right guard spot.

Round 2

PICK TEAM PLAYER POS SCHOOL
1 (32) Chargers LaMont Jordan RB Maryland
Adding Michael Vick and Jordan within a matter of hours will put a huge dent in the Chargers' offensive needs.
2 (33) Browns Anthony Thomas RB Michigan
After addressing the receiver position in the first round, look for the Browns to take a running back here.
3 (34) Cardinals Alge Crumpler TE North Carolina
Cardinals coaches have not given up on Terry Hardy yet, but they are running out of patience.
4 (35) Falcons Quincy Morgan WR Kansas State
The Falcons need Morgan's type of speed at receiver.
5 (36) Bengals DeLawrence Grant DE Oregon State
The Bengals continue to re-build their defensive front.
6 (37) Cowboys Casey Hampton DT Texas
With holes everywhere on defense, the Cowboys will take the best-available playmaker.
7 (38) Bears Will Allen CB Syracuse
Allen's speed is blazing, and his potential astounding.
8 (39) Patriots Reggie Wayne WR Miami (Fla.)
Wayne would be an ideal complement to Terry Glenn.
9 (40) Seahawks Adam Archuleta S Arizona State
The Seahawks will look to add a couple of safeties in this draft, and Archuleta would be a steal here.
10 (41) 49ers Carlos Polk ILB Nebraska
After addressing the running back position in the first round, it's all defense for a while for the 49ers.
11 (42) Rams Tommy Polley OLB Florida State
(From Chiefs) Polley is one of the more underrated players and could wind up contributing heavily as a rookie.
12 (43) Jaguars Chris Weinke QB Florida State
Weinke, who has shed weight, would be ready to step in if oft-injured Mark Brunell goes down.
13 (44) Panthers Sedrick Hodge OLB North Carolina
Hodge caught everyone's eyes with his workout times.
14 (45) Redskins Chris Chambers WR Wisconsin
After drafting a guard in the first, Schottenheimer must pick a receiver here.
15 (46) Bills Kenny Smith DT Alabama
Bills officials would like nothing more than to get a top end and tackle with their first two picks.
16 (47) Packers Chad Ward G Washington
Guard is somewhat of a need, and Ward is of great value this late.
17 (48) Lions Gary Baxter S Baylor
The Lions can get away with Ron Rice for one more year, but he is not the long-term solution.
18 (49) Jets Ken-Yon Rambo WR Ohio State
Jets officials would be happy with either Buckeye receiver, Rambo or Reggie Germany. Rambo could emerge into a star.
19 (50) Steelers Kendrell Bell ILB Georgia
Bell is a great raw athlete, but can he play within the system?
20 (51) Buccaneers Kevan Barlow RB Pittsburgh
Bucs officials want to get some insurance at running back, but it might not happen this early.
21 (52) Colts Markus Steele OLB Southern Cal
The Colts need more depth, youth and speed at linebacker. Steele would provide all three.
22 (53) Saints Jamie Winborn OLB Vanderbilt
Winborn is a tremendous athlete who could start right away.
23 (54) Rams Hakim Akbar S Washington
Akbar impressed scouts with his individual workout, and the Rams certainly need young bodies at safety.
24 (55) Eagles Travis Henry RB Tennessee
Henry would take some of the tough carries off Duce Staley's shoulders and provide insurance in case Staley gets hurt again.
25 (56) Dolphins Maurice Williams T Michigan
Dolphins officials wouldn't think twice about drafting Williams if available this late.
26 (57) Vikings William Peterson CB Western Illinois
Vikings officials would consider it a steal if they could get a cornerback as good as Peterson in the second round.
27 (58) Broncos Willie Middlebrooks CB Minnesota
Middlebrooks is a big cornerback who would have a chance to compete for a job in the nickel package.
28 (59) Raiders Brandon Winey T Louisiana State
Winey would be a steal here and would allow Oakland to build towards the future of its offensive line.
29 (60) Titans Reggie Germany WR Ohio State
Titans officials, in salary cap measures, pretty much released all of the team's depth at wide receiver. Germany could blossom into a star.
30 (61) Giants Bhawoh Jue CB Penn State
This team certainly needs cover help, and Giants officials love guys from Penn State.
31 (62) Ravens Jarrod Cooper S Kansas State
The loss of Kim Herring makes the safety position a priority in this year's draft.
