With my final mock draft of the 2001 season, the 49ers select DE Andre Carter (California) as the team's next starting defensive end. This mock draft contains no trades and represents the selection order as of April 16th, 2001.

1. San Diego Chargers - Michael Vick - QB - Virginia Tech
There is no question with this pick; Vick is the man.

2. Arizona Cardinals - Justin Smith - DE - Missouri
The best defensive player in the draft is Smith.

3. Cleveland Browns - David Terrell - WR - Michigan
Tim Couch gets another weapon.

4. Cincinnati Bengals - Leonard Davis - OT - Texas
The Bengals need to protect Akili Smith, and give room for Corey Dillon (if he re-signs) to run.

5. Atlanta Falcons - Gerard Warren - DT - Florida
The Falcons have an average defensive line at best, and Warren will upgrade it considerably.

6. New England Patriots - Kenyatta Walker - OT - Florida
The Patriots need to protect Drew Bledsoe and Walker provides much needed help.

7. Seattle Seahawks - Koren Robinson - WR - N.C. State
Has Randy Moss type skills, enough said.

8. Chicago Bears - LaDainian Tomlinson - RB - TCU
The Bears take, in my opinion, the best running back in the draft.

9. San Francisco 49ers - Andre Carter - DE - California
The 49ers take a local product, who they hope will register big sack numbers.

10. Green Bay Packers - Richard Seymour - DT - Georgia
The Packers take a big Defensive Tackle with enormous potential.

11. Carolina Panthers - Deuce McAllister - RB - Ole Miss
The Panthers need another back to share the load with Tim Biakabutuka.

12. Kansas City Chiefs - Michael Bennett - RB - Wisconsin
The Chiefs finally get their feature back. The Chiefs rarely throw to their backs so Bennett’s poor hands won’t be a big deal.

13. Jacksonville Jaguars - Jamal Reynolds - DE - Florida State
The Jaguar’s get a player to compliment Tony Brackens.

14. Buffalo Bills - Marcus Stroud - DT - Georgia
The Bills draft a replacement for Ted Washington.

15. Washington Redskins - Rod Gardner - WR - Clemson
The Redskins add a target at whom QB Jeff George can throw the ball.

16. Pittsburgh Steelers - Nate Clements - CB - Ohio State
The Steelers need a corner to develop, because both of their current starters will be free agents next year.

17. Seattle Seahawks - DeLawrence Grant - DE - Oregon State
A suprise pick that addresses a defensive need for the Seahawks.

18. Detroit Lions - Todd Heap TE Arizona State
Marty Mornhinweg's West Coast offense needs a great tight end, and Heap fits the bill.

19. New York Jets - Chad Johnson - WR - Oregon State
The Jets finally find someone to take over for Keyshawn Johnson.

20. St. Louis Rams - Dan Morgan - ILB - Miami
The Rams are thrilled to find Morgan still on the board. Their weak defense gets a much needed shot in the arm.

21. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Jeff Backus - OT - Michigan
Backus would significantly upgrade Tampa’s offensive line.

22. Indianapolis Colts - Fred Smoot - CB - Mississippi State
The Colts acquire the best pure cover man in the draft.

23. New Orland Saints - Jamar Fletcher - CB - Wisconsin
Fletcher is a playmaker, pure and simple.

24. Denver Broncos - Quinton Caver - OLB - Arkansas
Someone to take over for Bill Romanowski when he retires, or keels over from Steroid use.

25. Philadelphia Eagles - Santana Moss - WR - Miami
Donovan McNabb finally gets the playmaker he needs.

26. Miami Dolphins - Drew Brees - QB - Purdue
The Dolphins draft the next great Miami quarterback.

27. Minnesota Vikings - Lamont Jordan - RB - Maryland
Dennis Green takes another player with questionable character.

28. Oakland Raiders - Derrick Gibson - S - Florida State
If the Raiders had better play from the safety position last year, they may ave been Super Bowl Champions.

29. St. Louis Rams - Damione Lewis - DT - Miami
he Rams continue to upgrade their defense with another Miami player.

30. New York Giants - Will Allen - CB - Syracuse
The Giants solidify their secondary by drafting a solid cornerback.

31. Baltimore Ravens - Steve Hutchinson - G - Michigan The Ravens take the best available player from the offensive side of the ball, since their defense is already solid.
