Here's a position-by-position breakdown of the 49ers' needs heading into the draft:

QUARTERBACK

Who's here: J.Garcia, Rattay, Carmazzi, A. Garcia.

Draft needs: The 49ers are often provincial at this position, so Stanford's Randy Fasani and UC Davis' J.T. O'Sullivan fit the bill.
 

RUNNING BACK

Who's here: Garrison Hearst, FB Fred Beasley, Kevan Barlow, FB Terry Jackson, Jonas Lewis, Paul Smith.

Draft needs: Perhaps the team can go after a back in the late rounds to give a little competition to Lewis and Smith on special teams. It'll be difficult for any draft pick to make an impact as a rookie on offense.
 

RECEIVER

Who's here: Terrell Owens, J.J. Stokes, TE Eric Johnson, Tai Streets, Vinny Sutherland.

Draft needs: The 49ers are looking for a speed receiver for the future. The team wants Stokes to take a pay cut or he will not return. They know Owens might not be with the team in two years.
 

OFFENSIVE LINE

Who's here: LT Derrick Deese, LG Ron Stone, C Jeremy Newberry, RG Dave Fiore, RT Scott Gragg, Matt Willig, Chad Ward, Dave Costa.

Draft needs: Stone has replaced Ray Brown. The team expects this will be Deese's final season, so they need to draft a left tackle. If they take an offensive lineman in the first round pick for the first time since Harris Barton in 1987, it could be Levi Jones (Arizona State) or Marc Colombo (Boston College).
 

DEFENSIVE LINE

Who's here: DE Andre Carter, DE Sean Moran, DT Bryant Young, DT Dana Stubblefield, DE John Engelberger, DE Chike Okeafor, DT Bobby Setzer.

Draft needs: The 49ers want a pass-rushing defensive tackle to replace Stubblefield in nickel situations. The addition of free-agent Moran helps here.
 

LINEBACKER

Who's here: Derek Smith, Jeff Ulbrich, Julian Peterson, Jamie Winborn.

Draft needs: The loss of free-agent Terry Killens hurts. If the 49ers can get an outside linebacker such as Napoleon Harris (Northwestern) in the first round, don't be surprised if they pull the trigger.
 

SECONDARY

Who's here: CB Ahmed Plummer, CB Jason Webster, S Zack Bronson, S Tony Parrish, CB Rashad Holman, CB Anthony Parker, S Ronnie Heard, S John Keith.

Draft needs: The team's most dire need is a third cornerback. If they don't get a Mike Rumph (Miami) or a Lito Sheppard (Florida) in the first round, they have to grab somebody in the second round.

SPECIALISTS

Who's here: K Jose Cortez, P Jason Baker, KR/PR Sutherland.

Draft needs: Cortez had a difficult time just kicking it over long-snapper Brian Jennings' hindquarters. The 49ers might use a fifth-round pick on Travis Dorsch (Purdue) or Jeff Chandler (Florida).
