49ers Clubhouse Best Cornerbacks
By Robert

Sheldon Brown
South Carolina
2001: 35 tkl 2 int 8 pbu 2000: 67 tkl 4 int 15 pbu
Comments: His speed stands out. Brown also has great instincts, but he really will struggle against physical receivers and needs to work on his tackling.
Phillip Buchanon
Miami (Fl) JUNIOR
2001: 24 tkl 5 int 7 pbu
HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football, baseball and track. Played CB and RB. Honor Student Comments: Has amazing instincts. Buchanon is physical and has an extraordinary talent of jamming receivers. Can also blitz well. Scouts have a major problem with his speed, and his vertical leap isn’t up to standards yet. Will need to wait until he’s ready to start, but when he does, he’ll be a real threat.
Keyuo Craver
Nebraska
2001: 60 tkl 3 int 13 pbu
HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football and track. Played DB and RB Comments: Has great awareness and play recognition. Craver will give 110% at all times and plays man-to-man very effectively. He can also hit receivers very hard. He will need to work on his technique and does get burnt a few times too often.
Mike Echols
Wisconsin
2001: 67 tkl 3 int 13 pbu
HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football and basketball Comments: Is very quick and very aggressive. Has soft hands and is athletic. His major weakness is his size, and the fact that he has a relatively small vertical leap. Needs to work on his tackling technique. Echols is also a Diabetic.
Quentin Jammer
Texas
2001: 53 tkl 2 int 23 pbu
HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football and track. Comments: Jammer is the best CB in the draft. He has no weakness. He physical, can play man-to-man coverage, has nice speed and is a strong tackler. Should be a top 5 pick, and the team that does select him will have a great shutdown corner for years to come.
Omare Lowe
Washington
2001: 40 tkl 1 int 8 pbu
HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football and track. Option quarterback Comments: Lowe is a versatile player that could play CB or S. He’s good vs. the pass and the run. He is a tad slow. A major problem though is that Lowe has played more at S than CB, at S he hasn’t mastered and plays inconsistently, where as at CB he is inexperienced.
Derek Ross
Ohio St. JUNIOR
2001: 41 tkl 7 int 6 pbu
HIGH SCHOOL: Played QB Comments: Ross is a player who has potential. He’s got good speed, terrific instincts and nice height, but is very inexperienced, only starting one year. Needs to be stronger and more physica.l
Mike Rumph
Miami
2001: 30 tkl 0 int 7 pbu
HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football, basketball, and track. All-American Comments: Rumph is a very gifted athlete. But his major problem is that he’s ready, there doesn’t look to be a section of his game that looks as if it could drastically improve in the pros, what you see is what you get. But an upside to this is that he is ready to start straight away.
Lito Shepperd
Florida JUNIOR
2001: 23 tkl 2 int 5 pbu
HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football and track. All-American Comments: Has a truck load of talent, but he’s work ethic and off field behavior is something to be desired. He has no work ethic, thinks he is God’s gift to football and he’s been suspended for marijuana use. He will make a great return guy in the NFL. Shepperd has amazing speed and recognizes plays well. Should come with a large caution sticker.
Steve Smith
Oregon
2001: 41 tkl 6 int 18 pbu
HIGH SCHOOL: Played DB and WR Comments: Has nice size and is versatile, being able to play CB and S. His is a bit slow and needs to trust his instincts more. Nephew of NBA All-Star guard Dennis Johnson. |
