By Robert Baker, 49ers Clubhouse draft writer
March 21, 2002

Martin Bibla     Miami (Fl)
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 290lbs
40: 5.3
DOB: 4 October 1979
Hometown: Mountaintop, Pennsylvania
Major: Criminology major

2001: Started
2000: Started
1999: Started 12 games
1998: Started 4 games at RG
1997: REDSHIRT

HIGH SCHOOL: Played OL and DL

Comments: A perfectionist and a work-a-holic. Has great technique, good strength and has great footwork. Needs to work on his speed for downfield blocking, but his work ethic is a big plus, and what many teams will like about him.

Andre Gurode     Colorado
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 315lbs
40: 5.2
DOB: 6 March 1978
Hometown: Houston, Texas
Major: Psychology

2001: Started OG
2000: Started 6 games at C and 4 at OG
1999: Started 12 games at C
1998: Started at C
1997: Redshirt

HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football, basketball, and track. Played OL and DL

Comments: Very hard to find a weakness. A fierce blocker, who is extremely strong, has great balance, excels in pass and run protection and has good quickness. Could be used at C, after starting two an a half seasons there.

Eric Heitmann     Stanford
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 300lbs
40: 5.2
DOB: 24 February 1980
Hometown: Katy, Texas
Major: Economics

2001: Started at RG
2000: Started at RG
1999: Started at RG
1998: Played every game at OG

HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football and track. All-American

Comments: Heitmann is an intelligent player, but needs to add on bulk for teams to really show strong interest in him. He has strong legs and a great ability to get downfield to block. Really has to hit the weights to bulk up and get more upper body strength.

Antwan Kirk-Hughes     Texas
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 310lbs
40: 5.2
DOB: 16 December 1979
Hometown: Liberal Arts
Major: Waxahachie, Texas

2001: Started at OG
2000: Injured for most of the season
1999: Started at RG
1998: Played every game

HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football and track. Earned All-American honors

Comments: A pick that is ideally suited to back-up a veteran for a few years, while he works on his technique. While Kirk-Hughes is a project, he does have good basic skills. He had nice footwork and uses his hands well. Has injury concerns and very rarely can finish of a game.

Terrence Metcalf     Mississippi
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 310lbs
40: 5.3
DOB: 28 January 1979
Hometown: Clarksdale, Mississippi
Major: Management

2001: Started at LT
2000: Started at LT
1999: Started 6 games at LG
1998: Medical redshirt after 3 games
1997: Started all 12 games at LT

HIGH SCHOOL: Super Prep All-American. Played offence and defence

Comment: A big time run blocker who also does a very efficient job protecting the QB. Will need to work on his footwork to make him a big time player in the NFL.

Frank Romero     Oklahoma
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 290lbs
40: 5.4
DOB: 24 November 1979
Hometown: Moore, Oklahoma
Major: Communications

2001: Started at LT
2000: Started at LT
1999: Moved to OL and started 4 games
1998: Played DL

HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football, basketball, baseball, and track. Played TE and DE

Comments: A hard worker, who trains hard and plays hard. Has great instincts and plays his best games against big time opposition. His size is a worry to scouts though.

Kendall Simmons     Auburn
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 310lbs
40: 5.4
DOB: 11 March 1979
Hometown: Ripley, Mississippi
Major: Visual Communications

2001: Started at LT
2000: Started at LT
1999: Redshirt
1998: Started 5 games
1997: Started 3 games

HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football, basketball, and baseball

Comments: Simmons has a great sense of the blitz and can pickup the extra blitzer. He also has great strength and a nice technique. He does have some injury concerns though.

Fred Weary     Tennessee
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 300lbs
40: 5.2
DOB: 30 September 1977
Hometown: Montgomery, Alabama
Major: Economics

2001: Started
2000: Started 2 games at C
1999: Moved to OG and started all 12 games at LG
1998: Backup DT
1997: Redshirt

HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football and wrestling. Played OL and DT

Comments: A strong pass protector who moves well, but has a large injury cloud above his head.  Very inconsistent.

Toniu Fonoti     Nebraska     JUNIOR
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 340lbs
40: 5.3
DOB: 26 November 1981
Hometown: Hauula, Hawaii
Major: Communications

2001: Started
2000: Started at LG
1999: Played 13 games

HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in football, basketball and track

Comments: A massive guy who has great run blocking skills. He must work on his pass blocking skills and spend a bit of time on his technique. Will need a bit of time to work on his weaknesses, but could end up being the best OG in the draft.
